Dangerous expectations at pivotal weekend

408

There is a belief in football that the seemingly small game after a significant victory is dangerous.  Players psych themselves up for a big and important task, but they are not machines.  When that task is achieved, the mental energy for the next game is never the same.

You, me and everyone at Celtic knew the incredible importance of last week’s games at Tynecastle and Easter Road.  Neil Lennon got his second tenure off to a winning start and then kept the treble treble dream alive.  The expectation that we will beat Aberdeen tomorrow is overwhelming.

I don’t like this scenario.  Aberdeen will not compliantly roll over.  They are a better team than Hearts or Hibs and if we win, we will earn it the hard way.

This could be a weekend the league pivots.  If Newco drop points at Easter Road tonight and Celtic win tomorrow, the remainder of the campaign will be like a procession.  But if this scenario is reversed, every game will be played under intense pressure until the lead is extended.

Neil Lennon’s Hibernian took four points from Newco within a week in December, significantly weakening their challenge.  New manager, Paul Heckingbottom, will know that tonight he has an opportunity to put a stake of personal credibility in the ground.

  2. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Genuinely worth considering …

Sevco have given Gerrard millions of pounds to bring in more than 10 players …..

and the net result in the league is they have improved from a 2 points per game team to 2.03 ppg.

Nothing else has changed … including them still coming to get us.

    Hail hail

  3. “rainjurz ‘share’ points”…….NOT, rainjurz FAIL to win, or rainjurz FAIL to close the gap etc etc etc, which would have been the preferred Shortie hun lexicon applied to Our Great Club in the same circumstances.

  4. Who’s the eejit the clown that invaded the pitch or the failed SPL manager that uttered this:

Former Dundee manager Neil McCann on Sportsound

It’s just unacceptable, it’s just lunacy. It’s some idiot thinking he can enter the field of play. Stay away from the pitch, nobody wants to see you there. We should be speaking about how well Rangers have played in this match and some of the last-ditch defending from Hibs.

They were six points behind having played a game more than us when we went to Ibrox last year for the 3 2 game.

They were excited because they had bashed Falkirk in the cup and a few bottom of the table teams. After Ibrox we didnt play until the following Sunday while they played Saturday. So if they won at Ibrox and their following league game, they went top.

But French Eddy had other ideas

First introduced to The Cramps by a guy I met at college. He gave me a tape. Loved the anarchy.

He also tried to sell me 13th Floor Elevators. Jury still out on some of that, but knew his stuff..

  12. Absolute rantings partly based on a two hour meeting with Celtic yesterday but mostly regarding what I’ve heard and seen through media in the past month. So please excuse.

When I was first taken to football in the 1970s I witnessed widespread fighting amongst supporters, often based on gang culture and areas within Glasgow and the central belt. In 1980 hundreds fought with fist, foot and bottle on the grass of Hampden. Throughout the ‘80s we had football hooligans often dominating games at Parkhead but more particularly at away grounds.

And then there was a lull.

The ‘90s saw the rise of acid house amongst the youth and the club culture took over. Fighting ceased and a love in prevailed.

We hardly noticed because Celtic were shite at the time.

Maybe we should have tried the drugs.

In recent times the ultra movement has taken over. In Britain and particularly Scotland it’s largely a different scene witnessed in many areas of Europe. A quick google will evidence this. The ultra scene at Celtic has been driven since 2006 by the Green Brigade and despite what many in the media and even some amidst our own support would have you believe, it’s not violent or hooligan in nature.

We’re not blind though, or stupid, we know there’s an element within society just now who’ve developed a “We don’t care” attitude. It’s selfish, it’s moronic, it’s distasteful it’s abhorrent and sometimes, sometimes criminal.

At times these people also follow football.

In the past few years I’ve watched Lennon being attacked at Tynecastle. I’ve seen a Hun jump the hoardings at Ibrox to attack Brown. I’ve seen a battery and a bottle thrown at Griffiths.

In 2016 after the Scottish cup final we had the largest widespread distribance at a football game in two generations. Most claimed we’d never seen the likes. We had.

There had been a plethora of occasions when things had gone wrong.

At the start I said that this was a rant, it is.

Just please, please realise there’s a reason that we as Celtic supporters and the supporters of other teams are being portrayed in this way.

It’s suits a politically, media driven narrative. We should be too smart for this

  13. glendalystonsils on

Rainjurrrz 2 January MEEEEEGGGAAAsignings got 10 minutes and 0 minutes play respectively.

  14. Hibs were shocking at times especially in the first half.

They kept playing themselves into trouble and at times it looked like Old Hibs vs New Hibs.

To give a little credit to TFOD2.1 — they played some good football but were very lax in front of goal.

However when the ball started to stick with Hibs they folded and were lucky to get a point.

SG might have caused some of their woes with his substitution.

Finally the MIB was shocking — some of the tackles that he allowed were shocking plus a growing amount of cheap shots and off the ball blocking and barging. No wonder Scottish football is so insular and inward looking when our MIB play the game to a set of local rules which would shock other leagues.

If the pitch invader was a player his behaviour would have been deemed acceptable.

  15. Allan MacGregor kicking out again ?

On McNulty ? After MacGregor makes a save another wee kick out, VAR should get this clown community service over a season .. serial offender … and shoite at cross balls :-)

I’d be I interested to know what the meeting with Celtic was about.

IMO we’ve brought it on ourselves.

By not correctly calling out Sevco as a new club we ‘ve allowed the hysteria of “going for 55” with all its repercussions. Like the pitch invasions at Partick and Livingston, the attack on Broony at Ibrox and all the rest of the crap that is now happening on an almost weekly basis.

I have to say I was half expecting the fud tonight to pull a knife on Tavernier. There was one awful moment when I thought he was reaching into his pocket.

We’ve opened Pandoras box here. The hatred in Scottish football since 2012 has gone off the scale. It’s a completely different animal from the normal rivalry we ‘ve know over the previous decades.

I’ve no idea how we get out of it.

It’s not unlike the whole UK wide Brexit situation where the whole country is like a tinderbox.
