Dangerous teams with nothing to lose

482

We lost at Ibrox in January to a team that did not record a single attempt on target, not even at the own-goal we conceded.  We lost there again this month having missed a penalty and even better chances, while assisting the effort with another own-goal.  Frankly, Newco must be wondering how poorly they need to play against us to lose a game.  Nothing I saw from the home team in either of our recent defeats there justified fear of them.

If the old adage ’beware the straw man’ holds true, Celtic will deliver.  The straw man has nothing to lose or fear.  What have Celtic got to lose heading to Ibrox on Sunday?  This should be the most relaxed Celtic team to head there in Newco’s 9-year history.

The dubious motivation, to stop Newco’s unbeaten run in the league, feels a bit beneath us, but still…..

The dubious motivation, to stop Newco’s unbeaten run in the league, feels a bit beneath us, but still…..

They won the league Paul. Mainly due to the ridiculous decisions made by the board you back so fully.

    Beneath us? Talk about entitled?

    ————

“due to the ridiculous decisions made by the board”

    What ridiculous decisions?

The board, DD. & PL resisted interest in Euouard, Christie & Ajer. They kept the whole squad intact and allowed Neil Lennon to spend c£20m in order too strengthen. The fact that Barkas, Duffy, Ajeti, Kenny & Laxalt didn’t work out was down to the manager who apparently “has an eye for a player”

The squad was two-thirds into a fourth treble and ‘downed tools’. They say “good players don’t become bad players overnight” – our squad proved that wrong.

The football department – players, management & coaches shoulder the TOTAL blame for this horrendous season – no one else!

  2. FAVOURITE UNCLE on

Just watched 5 mins of ARBROATH VERSUS MORTON on HESGOAL. There are 2 guys on scaffolding behind one of the goals. They must be freezing. .Hope they have both backed nil nil draw.

  3. Wonder if McGinn-gate will become a seasonal discussion on here.

I suppose we need something between Christmas wishes and the poppy debate.

Hopefully, new manager comes in and focuses minds and online chatter

  4. If Billy McNeill or Davie Hay spoke to me on the phone for 40 mins and asked me to join Celtic and how much he wanted me then there is no other option but to tell Villa, ‘I’m sorry but…’

    BR never done that.

If you ask your 50k a week manager to get a signing of a mad Celtic fan over the line, then you expect to get it completed if you’ve matched all the fees.

I still like this place but unfortunately political stuff is overbearing.

Sentinel Celts is a different gravy 😉

You can actually go on there without having an agenda .

And everyone seems more calm 😉

    Be nice 🤷🏽‍♂️😉

  6. !!Bada Bing!! on

Leicester most goals in last 15 minutes from the EPL,that’s not luck, it’s fitness, look at the condition our mob are in

  7. fairhill bhoy on

Bada-that’s the thing though,it never did ring!

He might still be sitting waiting 🤷🏽‍♂️

  8. Bedtime for me,working tomorrow morning before our nephews wee bhoys christening and then 2 grandkids staying tomorrow night.Fitba Sunday.lm glad I’m not working Monday 😄

Everyone have a good weekend 🍀

  9. Good luck to John McGinn. He seems like a decent guy and a proper Tim, so it would have been nice to see him being successful in the hoops. Another scot in our midfield though so some wouldn’t have been happy. And difficult to find room for him even last season when Broonie was still ruling Scottish football and Calmac was playing so well.

You wonder if he might look back on a missed opportunity – we won the treble in the two seasons after he might have signed for us, but a play off win in the championship and making a real impression in the prem probably is ample compensation. He might well have ended up there anyway.

As mistakes go (if that’s what it was) winning trebles in the two seasons after his aborted move probably makes it one of our smaller ones. He’s probably not yet good enough to have made a real difference in Europe, although he’s young enough still to get better yet.

Something I forgot to SFTB and 79CAPs earlier was how much I enjoyed reading their historical / political arguments over the 24 hours I was reading them.

Their type of chat is what hooked me into CQN in 2006.

    Good educating argument.

A wee bit of daftness thrown in doesn’t harm.

  11. Totally off subject but the only contract in CFCs history that had/has a release clause was BRs.

Anyone who says different is either making things up or is being made an arse of.

  12. No one has mentioned money. Mcginn would have been on more money at Villa than Celtics offer.

The question of Money is often the explanation when players are concerned. The downing of tools by our players this season were down to money. The want-aways wanted what their predesessors got, which like Tierney Armstrong etc where they tripled their wages.

The fact that Duffy and others turned up getting paid four times their salary was a point of jealousy and also that they were not very good. The players were disgruntled and felt undervalued and chucked it. The Motivation was gone and the quadruple Treble winners struggled in EVERY game, It was the players fault, and the coaches couldn’t get them to perform

Follow the money with McGinn and the want aways

  13. Like 99.9 % on here I have no insight as to what happened re the McGinn transfer, I do recall him on Sky not long after he left Hibs to go to Villa, it was a Hibs v Celtic game at Easter Road, he gave his version of events, a wee bit different to Turkeybhoys, but he was obviously telling lies.

What I do know for a fact, yip he could have waited and ran down his contract with Hibs, the money he was on was pathetic as an aside, then joined the club he loved, but he desperately wanted away from Hibs, why, cos of the manager at the time, that I know for a fact, the rest I kinda believe what the man himself said, not what posters, the papers et all say, but yer man himself.

Stats are a funny thing. If we’re basing judgement of fitness levels on goals scored in the last 15 minutes these would suggest we’re much fitter than a team that finished 20 points above us

According to those we scored 21 goals in the last 15 of games; the Huns scored 10. It might be that we’ve scored loads of goals at the end of gabes that have already been won. So the stat isn’t so relevant in a tight game like tonight

I’ve never thought we lacked fitness, just guile and intelligence to deal with a packed defense when we need a goal.

He came out yesterday and said Lenny was brand new with him.

Agree – whatever people may think about DD, PL & the Board and many on here hate them – they had no part in this season’s farce. It was down to the players/management – anyone not accepting this is deluding themselves.

  17. C40ME

Aye he may well have done, tell me when you have ever heard a player, manager, coach or anyone who is in the game slagging anyone else in the game, it just doesn’t happen.

  18. Go tell the Spartim on

DD, PL and the board could’ve replaced the manager when it may have made a difference, complicit in this shambles of a season

2 sleeps till we get a chance to get them doubting over the summer

    UTLR 🍀🍀🍀

  19. I’m posting this on page 1, to see if I can get on the ball.

Speaking of which what a great little programme that was on BBC Scotland

remembering that great Centenary Scottish Cup Final from 1988.

Even a wee cameo for some posters on here, Maggie Thatcher presenting the Cup to Roy Aitken.

Good and funny analysis from all concerned.

“To be fair to Leeann (Dempster) and everyone at Hibs they were waiting as well. They didn’t know what was going on. So I’m out checking the pitch – I don’t know why because it was astro turf – but Neil Lennon came out, we were speaking and he was so good at that. One of the best man managers I’ve had, so relatable, knew what I was going through and what I wanted at the time. ”

    John McGinn

  21. Sonoferin

Cheers for the reply! That’s a bit more reassuring and definitely the type we should look at! I agree that guys who step up and deliver in higher leagues is always a good sign – Bayo’s much the same. I’m undecided about Nisbett – he’s looked good at times and poor at others. Another season with Hibs would stand him in good stead I reckon.

“SFTB- bit of a cheap shot re McGinn, but he ho,not Lawwell’s fault”

    ———————————

Absolutely not. No cheap shot offered by me and no exoneration of PL either.

I am neither for not against John McGinn- he has no relationship with Celtic except as a fan and he’s very welcome in that family.

Don’t know what you mistook for a cheap shot but, if it was the point about money, then I have no problem with him choosing the money. It’s a short career- so fair play to the lad- he seems a genuine player and a good team mate.

But he could do with being a bit more reticent and/or consistent when faced with questions about why he’s not at Celtic. For one thing- it’s a bit disrespectful to the Villa fans paying his wages
