I’m still meeting people who haven’t noticed. Hibernian are on an outstanding run of form, having won their last three games and undefeated in six. The last reversal they had was at Celtic Park the first weekend in April. On Sunday we’re playing the team with the best recent form in Scotland; the warning signs are painted in large green font.
They are dangerous up front, Leigh Griffiths has scored four goals more than any Celtic player, including several stunners.
The weight of the world rested on Hibs’ shoulders at last season’s Scottish Cup final, when the stage was set for a century of pain to be wiped away by defeating their greatest rivals. It was too much. Now they take the field unburdened and vastly more dangerous than St Mirren, Hearts or Kilmarnock were when they overcame Celtic at Hampden recently.
Odds on Hibs are very generous.
I caught some chat online last night. “Blackmail”, “extortion”, “imprisonment”, “getting rid of the problem”, “a catastrophe of an intensity that you…. clearly do not appear to understand”, “fraudulent”, “once the genie is out it will have a life of its own”.
What an unimaginable mess.
I think “Been an admirer of your recent work” is bound to become a euphemism in years to come for when something that should never have been said or written slips out. This is a small glimpse into how the whole thing happened.
Fantastic Q&A with Willie Wallace this morning, thanks to Willie and Winning Captains. Willie’s recollections of our great times are irresistible. Reading the book as it came together was a joy. You’ll love it.
Remember you can start Cup Final weekend by meeting Willie at a book signing at Waterstons’ on Sauchiehall St, tomorrow – 25th May, 46 years on from the day – from 2pm until 4pm. If you can’t make it you can order a signed copy below.

“The Guardian understands that the pilot became concerned at a disruptive passenger who had started shouting and the pilot asked as a precaution to divert from Manchester to Stansted. The pilot was worried about the safety of the plane. It is understood the pilot was then satisfied the incident was over; however the passenger is likely to be escorted from the plane at Stansted.
There is no indication that the indication is linked to Wendesday’s attack but it may reflect the worried atmosphere since then.”
UEFA also voted to include Gibraltar
as a member nation, its 54th.
There had been opposition from
Spain but the Gibraltar FA won a
case at the Court of Arbitration for
Sport obliging UEFA to accept the
British overseas territory as a
member.
Gareth Latin, president of the
Gibraltar Football Association, said
in a statement: “This is a
momentous occasion for football in
Gibraltar. UEFA membership means
that we can begin the next chapter
of Gibraltarian football.
“At last we’ll be able to show the
whole of Europe that we can match
the best with football of a high
standard and entertaining style. It
will open up a whole new world of
opportunities for our highly skilled
young footballers.
“This is one of our greatest ever
sporting moments and, of course,
we’d like to thank everyone who
helped with our bid and all those
who voted for us. We couldn’t have
made it without you.”
UEFA president Michel Platini
confirmed that Gibraltar would be
kept apart from Spain in qualifying
for Euro 2016.
Platini said: “Gibraltar will not play
qualifying matches with Spain – we
also have this situation with
Armenia and Azerbaijan.”

Met Derek Whyte outside a disco bar one night. Didn’t really have much to say. Also et Raith star Stevie Crawford who I saw a few times. Always on his own. He bought me a pint and I had a chat with him. Felt a bit sorry for him to be honest. Full of footballers that place in those days. Never been back though.
Maybe one day…..

1931-05-24: New York Giants 2-3 Celtic, North American Tour
In this match against the New York Giants, both the home side’s goals had a Scottish as well as an international flavour. The first was scored by Kirkintilloch lad Jimmy Gallagher from a pass by Edinburgh-born Bart McGhee, both players were members of the USA national squad that recently finished in third place in the 1930 Inaugural World Cup in Uraguay.
The second goal came two minutes later and was scored by William “Shamus” O’Brien from a pass by Jimmy Gallagher.
The goalkeeper of the New York Giants was Jock “Gabby” Brown and their scoring inside-left was Neilston-born William “Shamus” O’Brien. Carnoustie-born, Johnny Slaven, who had played for Raith Rovers and Hearts was another expatriate Scot in the Giants team.
Celtic’s goals were scored by Jimmy McGrory, (2); and Charlie Napier.
