Dangers of a league without whipping boys

792

At 1:45 yesterday afternoon the prospects of Celtic stretching their lead at the top of the table by the end of the day appeared slight.  The tide has turned in Celtic’s favour in recent weeks but leagues are hard to win and we need only think back to how many chances St Mirren peppered Fraser Forster’s goal with to appreciate the difference between winning games and dropping points.

Teams in the SPL are well organised, even eighth place St Mirren, who are on a run of poor form but apart from a couple of lapses defended well, created more chances than Celtic and played with adventure and confidence.

Celtic are the best team in the league but there will not be a single game before the end of the season in which they will be able to take anything for granted.  The result from yesterday we should pay most attention to is bottom of the league Dunfermline’s 0-3 win at Kilmarnock.  This is a league without whipping boys.

    You’re spoiled for choice.

Personally speaking, the northern coast of Spain is spectacular. Cities like Bilbao and San Sebastian are quite unique, while the San Fermin festival runs in Pamplona from 6th-14 July and is simply bonkers, a memory for life. (Pamplona is an hour’s drive from the coast, although you need to be up early for the running)

San Sebastian is perhaps my favourite, and Celtic_First will give you more info than me.

Bilbao is a completely different style and culture from the typical Moorish Spanish architecture, and in addition to pearls like the Guggenheim, there is loads of outdoor concerts and the likes in the evenings.

The resort towns of St Jean de Luz and Biarritz on the French Basque coast are wonderful and make for a good location so long as you have a car – about 30 minutes from Bayonne on one side of the border and San Sebastian on the other.

In addition to all of this, you have the mountains on the doorstep – Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa. None of you will run out of things to do, see, eat and drink, all of them marvellous.

If you’re wanting hotels in the cities, the small chain of Petit Palace is really nice and generally well priced, and you won’t be short of alternatives – because the north coast is less visited, the value is better than elsewhere.

    Enjoy!

i thought Commons had a major impact on the game

i also thought he was very good , even allowing for the short period he was on , last week

    re midfield

as soon as Izzy is up to speed i think Lenny will go with Vic,Broonie and Joe

imo Ki struggles against hard working teams who don`t give him time on the ball……it would have been difficult for anyone to play football in those conditions yesterday

don`t know Basque Spain very well but i`ve been to Biarritz a few times …well worth a visit

  4. I’ve been a bit worried by the absence of Estadio.

Can anybody update me regarding his well-being ?

You make a good point on Ki, he is a type of player that needs time, arguably a player for CP. I was always of the same opinion regarding Naka.

I accept that Ki has made contributions away from home as did Naka. However, over the piece both in my opinion are and were more suited to playing at CP.

Commons is the missing link, he gives us options, creates so much and gives us the spark.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  6. Former Premier League referee Jeff Winter has denied seeing comments on his personal website making an obscene attack on the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church.

The 56-year-old said he was taking legal advice over a post that made reference to altar boys being abused after Celtic won the latest Old Firm game with Rangers last month.

The comments appeared in the retired official’s blog post Winter’s World while he was on a cruise of Australia and New Zealand in December.

Mr Winter, of Ingleby Barwick, Teesside, said he had not seen the comments as the website had been suspended by internet authorities.

He told The Northern Echo: “I have been away for 39 days and, during that time, I have had little or no opportunity to phone, email or text as I have been at sea most of the time.

“I need to look and see what has been going on, what has been on my website and take some legal advice.”

Celtic Football Club complained to Strathclyde Police, and the force is now investigating.

Peter Kearney, director of the Scottish Catholic Media Office, said last week: “Not only is it not banter this goes way beyond comment on football.

“I mean the comments made here, if they prove to be correct, take us into a different realm altogether. And they do constitute the most outrageous religious hatred.”

Mr Winter, who published an autobiography in 2006 entitled Who’s the B****** in the Black, retired from top-flight officiating in 2006 and now works as a television pundit and after-dinner speaker.

He regularly appears on Sky TV and talkSport…… with any luck not anymore!

  7. No offer for Claasen yet

    Posted: 2012-01-21 21:09

Daylon Claasen’s agent says he has yet to receive an approach for the South African midfielder despite reports of interest from QPR and Glasgow Celtic.

The 21-year-old who plays for Belgian side FC Lierse was linked with a switch to the UK on Friday after some impressive displays this season. But having told KickOff.com this week that Claasen will not move in the January transfer window, agent Ivan Modia confirms there have only been enquiries at this stage and hinted Claasen may also have problems securing a work permit in the UK.

“I know that clubs are interested in him but we’ve not had any firm contact from anyone,” he says.

“If anyone in the United Kingdom wants to bid for Claasen then they would need to move quickly because of the work permit situation. There’s only 10 days left until the window shuts and it would be too tight to organise everything properly. If the whole thing was started today then there may be time but any later will be difficult.”

The former Ajax Amsterdam player only has two international caps and would require special dispensation to move to a British club. Modia also represents Claasen’s Bafana Bafana team-mate Steven Pienaar but says that QPR have not yet tabled a new bid for the Spurs midfielder.

“We’ve heard nothing else on Steven – I have been expecting something this week but we are still waiting,” he says.

  8. Lennybhoy, pr ayr

I am not a fan of Ki, I think he is a good footballer, but for some reason he is not as effective as he could be – the stats back this up , if you look at his time on the pitch – we do better when he is not there.

On Naka, I sort of agree about his away from home contribution, but, his league winner at Kilmarnock and the goal at Old Trafford were immense

Re Northern Spain. I agree with all comments but would also add the lovely small city of Santander who interestingly have Racing Santander as the local team in green & white. I saw them play Ath Madrid and Celtic scarves were on sale outside the ground.

Amazing beaches, family friendly, good restaurants and cheaper than San Sebastion ( which is an easy drive, as is Bilbao ).

    Good luck with your choice.

Yeah mate Ki is a gifted footballer. Naka was also one and you are spot on he did make a contribution at times away from home. None more so than that day in Kilmarnock. My mate CM67 was on the phone to the wife to change flights for a break they were about to go on just as Naka scored…there was no need to cancel the flight.

I see Collum is back refereeing games again, this is 1 man we need to keep an eye on, Hamilton pen last year when McGinn went down and Broadfoot’s pen springs to mind.

I actually watched a short bit of that film when Channel 4 must have shown it in the late 70s/80s. It was based on the idea that eating was seen as something dirty and best done in private, whilst using the toilet was a social event- so the clip I saw was a form of dinner party where a group of people sat on toilets around a kitchen table, having a conversation while trying to squeeze one out. Not sure of the point of it all and not interesting enough to keep watching.

Referring to your headline Paul , the other danger we face is decisions like the offside given against Rogne for the third goal .

In another game that decision could have cost us valuable points , remember the Hamilton game with their miles offside goal being allowed to stand last season.

In my opinion our biggest threat to us winning this league is officials both on and off the park .
