Dateline 66-67: Celts open League Cup defence at Tynecastle

1034

The Football Specials will be packed today with optimistic Celtic fans ahead of their opening competitive game of season 1966-67 at Tynecastle.  The Glasgow club hope to win the League Cup for the fourth time in their history. They face a Hearts team looking to win the League Cup for the firth time, which last season became increasingly dependent on lightning-fast striker, Willie Wallace.

By comparison, the reigning Division One and League Cup champions have two of the best wingers in the country. Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone were the only Celtic players to score in their final eight competitive games of last season, as Jock Stein’s team’s fitness proved crucial with a barrage of late goals.

St Mirren visit Clyde in the other Group 4 game, the only group with all Division One teams, but it’s the two giants who meet in Edinburgh who are favourites to produce the group winner.

    Exactly.

It’s nout to do with us right now and for the foreseeable. It’s about financing their 4 year history and survival. I doubt we will see them in Europe via their league position for a couple of seasons. But it may come sooner due to being runners up in CELTIC PLC doing SFA cup.

  4. Celtic will be so far ahead of Every team now in Scotland. It is up to the rest of Scottish fitba to call out the Cheating, they are the ones who are being cheated the most.

  5. Maybe the unbelievable fixture list for the start of the season is more to do with weakening sevvies real competition this year – those who are aiming for Euro places.

The sevco leaning suits may be corrupt but they must know there is no chance of them winning the league.

It really is up to other clubs to do what levein did back in the day and call it out for what it is. Otherwise as he said ‘what’s the point?’

    Re watching the huns.

If they were playing in the street I wouldn’t look out the window.

  7. me an attention seeking fanny ??????

Fanny maybe but attention seeking…….naw…….if that was the case I would be in here every day come rain hail or shine wether I was sitting down to dinner, sitting in the pub sitting watching the game or whatever else I was doing but felt I had to post in case I was missed. That’s an attention seeker

4 leg bys down mid off after a loose one from the bowler.

No idea. But the ball went to the rope.

Batsman didn’t hit it with the bat; it hit is leg, hand or pad and went to the boundary. He doesn’t get the run on his score but the 4 runs are added as extras.

  10. The consensus seems to be who cares about the cheating as long as Celtic win the league.

That attitude is what is wrong with society, the attitude of who cares about the poor as long as im alright.

Meanwhile our game is a complete sham, is that conducive to keeping our manager long term?

The cup draws look, increasingly fixed, did you see the face and body language of the sponsor, midweek?

Craig Thomson is a cheat, no question and to make matters worse I had over 4.5 bookings and their was 4 :D

    No happy.

I think the issue is ones man cheating is another mans correct call, once you’ve figured out a way to prove cheating then come back to us :o)

  12. Forgot to mention I am disappointed in Paul Hartley, who I know.

It was noticeable however that he wasn’t asked about it, when clearly wronged.

Contrast that with Neilson who wasn’t wronged yet had plenty to say, these managers know what is acceptable and not in this bigoted football of ours.

    Goodnight Timland.

Won’t catch much of the game? tonight,

family duties, massive night on Wednesday,

    if you can be there.

  14. I wouldn’t mind looking oot the windae too watch the Huns playing on the Kingston Bridge at rush hour

Paul Hartley didn’t have to wait to be asked about the honest mistake.

Many a manager would have been taking the chance to address the issue in front of the cameras.

    Inexplicable.

  16. awwww ffs if the cup draw was fixed midweek shoooooorley we would be contemplating a midweek trip to Aberdeen

Spotted John Collins plus John Hughes among my fellow spectators at Spartans 5-2 cup win over Gala Fairydean Rovers today.

Thought at first it was the female referee that attracted them when HIbs were playing a few miles away, but remembered that JC used to play for Gala as a young man. We saw a cracking game with good football and some excellent goals. Great advert for the Lowland League, but settling down now for the real stuff !!

Yes I agree, that is why I am disappointed in him, maybe he will mention it in another interview.

Not making excuses for him but I have personally witnessed him suffering horrendous abuse because he was an ex Celt.

to be fair I’ve seen plenty updates on here from all kinds of games and sports. It’s a wonder anyone is surprised by it.

How many lower league games you seen live reported on here? We’ve even had some posters watching and complaining about the commentators on Rangers Tv

  20. PETEC @ 4:58 pm, so true, we need help from other clubs and their supporters to keep the cheating huns and cheating referees in check.
