Dave Cormack’s empty words

489

“We have been doing local pilots on mental health and wellbeing in Aberdeen which are working.

“The days of booze and betting sponsorships doesn’t really tie in with healthy living and being at the heart of our communities.

“Football can be a magnet for people, healthy living and mental health, so we need to be at the centre of the community.”

The words of Aberdeen chairman, Dave Cormack, spoken less than two weeks ago.  Yesterday, we discovered two of his players tested positive for Covid and a further six have been isolated as all eight attended the pub at the centre of the Aberdeen outbreak.

Mr Cormack, those are empty words.  Today, you are a poster boy for poor governance in healthy living, booze and the caring for the heart of your community.  Your primary task as a director of a football club is to direct the actions of those you control.  What happened?

His interview, in the Daily Record, was full of empty management speech:

“Something I think we have to explore at the centre to drive an agenda.

“What do we want to be? What is our vision? I don’t know what the vision is. We don’t have a branding strategy.

“At the centre, it’s not run like a real company that would have a vision, a branding strategy or goals to drive income.

“The cup is half full, how can we drive things?”

It’s like he had just finished watching a very poor Ted Talk on business growth by an entrepreneur who sold for millions and has no idea how it happened.  Or maybe that’s really him.

Scottish football is the great grounder of egos.  Think your business background gives you better insight and decision making than those in an industry you’ve never worked in?  Buy Hearts or Aberdeen and find out.  Think that your experience as on the Conservative Party – Scottish executive while Tony Blair earned a landslide prepared you for anything?  Maybe you should become chief exec at Partick Thistle?

Football players have been granted ‘sports bubble’ special status, when they abuse that privilege by hitting busy pubs, they have let us all down.

  1. Go tell the Spartim on

    Bada

Word is someone’s actually paid money for him

Shame really some signings just don’t work out.

    Who’s coming in 🤔

  2. To cancel the Sheepies game is a political decision rather than a football one.

They should definitely forfeit the 3 points, but that will not happen as they would need to then forfeit points against us.

The huns would not be happy.

‘We have now gone 22 days in Scotland without a Covid 19 related death, yet we have had massive spikes in infection rates.’

    ##

The absence of deaths may be because

    1. The ‘massive spike’in infection rates is from a very low starting point, and the data is inconsistent.

    2. The viral loads that people are contracting are probably pretty low, due to lockdown, and the overall increase in physical distancing and personal hygiene. Lower viral load might mean a less severe infection.

    3. Treatment seems to be getting more effective.

If the economy needs to be opened up then it should start with those areas that involve the least risk.

By any sensible measure pubs should have been the very last thing to be allowed to open.

Apart from anything else what’s the point of going to a pub if you intend to follow the recommended guidelines? Where’s the enjoyment in it?

  4. So does anyone now think there will be fans attending games this year?

    This season?

  5. The reason the St Johnstone game is off is because no one can guarantee that the rest of the players are virus free. Testing at Cormack Park ( AFC training ground ) was being done twice weekly. This has now been upped to every day.. Because the virus can remain dormant for 7-10 days, it’s likely that none of the players can be sure they don’t have it. A negative test doesn’t necessarliy mean that the virus isn’t present, just that current testing isn’t detecting it.

It’s likey that these players will have to test negative for another week before they’re allowed to play another team. I would expect the Dons game against Hamilton midweek to also be called off.

But. Players who haven’t been infected should be free to play by next weekend.

I expect the game at Celtic Park to go ahead against an understrength Aberdeen team. Their problem.

  7. Ernie,

You may be correct and what you say is very interesting ,or slowly but surely we are gaining some form of an immune system.

I am also very wary that our government’s may not want to give back our hard won freedoms.

    Cheers and HH.

Thank you all you wonderful Celtic family, for the birthday wishes.

  9. Cormack is just the latest Big mouth, Know all egoist. Examples like him are numerous. He shot his mouth off while Footballers returned to type and go for a night out in a large group.

We should ensure that our players cease socialising together in groups. It has been demonstrated what a bad idea this now is.

I have some sympathy for the Aberdeen players who are young men who have plenty of money and who have been through 6 months of lockdown. They didn’t disobey any guidelines or rules. The Pubs were open, no masks to be worn.

  10. Happy Birthday Mick wish we were back in Melbourne to have Guinness or 2 with you ! 🍷🍺🍷🎊🎉

  11. Bigbhoy

Think you’re wrong – I’m sure rules are in place forbidding socialising in exchange for football to continue. Creating sporting bubbles.

  12. BIGBHOY on 7TH AUGUST 2020 1:24 PM

Lockdown started on 23 March, so just over four months for the Aberdeen players to be out drinking, putting themselves at risk of contracting and spreading a career ending illness.

They don’t deserve any sympathy whatsoever.

In bed now and just chilling after a day on a fine wee litre of

beujolay, the nightcap is a fine bottle of Glen Morey from Elgin.

Just to let you all know the ingredients, here’s the definition.

First impressions are of toasted vanilla and subtle hints of oak.

Aromas of rich dried fruits, and laced with chocolate and

blackberries, a wonderful burst of spices hits the tongue with

a trace of caramel and cinnamon comes to the fore.

Feck me ! wish I’d had ice cream wi that.

    No and no(at moment)

  20. Seems there is little or no scope for postponed games to be fulfilled this season. So, imo, St Johnstone should be awarded a 3-0 victory and the 3 points. Similarly, any future fixture than is cancelled because of the behaviour of their players, the offending team should suffer the same punishment.

  21. Anyone help.If we are to have 2 teams in the CL next season, does that mean one gets automatic qualification to groups, the other ,qualifiers.A bit confusing,as that’s the way it used to work.

teams still have to go through qualifiers to get to the groups.

No automatic qualification to the group stages for champions next season. I’m sure it’s one less qualifying round .

Think sevco are already spending that money.
