Dave Cormack’s empty words

489

“We have been doing local pilots on mental health and wellbeing in Aberdeen which are working.

“The days of booze and betting sponsorships doesn’t really tie in with healthy living and being at the heart of our communities.

“Football can be a magnet for people, healthy living and mental health, so we need to be at the centre of the community.”

The words of Aberdeen chairman, Dave Cormack, spoken less than two weeks ago.  Yesterday, we discovered two of his players tested positive for Covid and a further six have been isolated as all eight attended the pub at the centre of the Aberdeen outbreak.

Mr Cormack, those are empty words.  Today, you are a poster boy for poor governance in healthy living, booze and the caring for the heart of your community.  Your primary task as a director of a football club is to direct the actions of those you control.  What happened?

His interview, in the Daily Record, was full of empty management speech:

“Something I think we have to explore at the centre to drive an agenda.

“What do we want to be? What is our vision? I don’t know what the vision is. We don’t have a branding strategy.

“At the centre, it’s not run like a real company that would have a vision, a branding strategy or goals to drive income.

“The cup is half full, how can we drive things?”

It’s like he had just finished watching a very poor Ted Talk on business growth by an entrepreneur who sold for millions and has no idea how it happened.  Or maybe that’s really him.

Scottish football is the great grounder of egos.  Think your business background gives you better insight and decision making than those in an industry you’ve never worked in?  Buy Hearts or Aberdeen and find out.  Think that your experience as on the Conservative Party – Scottish executive while Tony Blair earned a landslide prepared you for anything?  Maybe you should become chief exec at Partick Thistle?

Football players have been granted ‘sports bubble’ special status, when they abuse that privilege by hitting busy pubs, they have let us all down.

    You ask good questions.

My sense is we are just testing way more rigorously so finding more with it.

This is creating a fear and panic way beyond what is proportionate.

That is my not so well informed guess. But I am honestly not sure anyone in any so called position of authority knows better.

The toll of other illnesses not treated due to covid alert, mental health challenges and real financial hardship problems caused by the uncertainty is eclipsing the actual incremental covid issues by some way already.

We are set for a great day at old Trafford. Ironically I had a ticket for the Saturday of the OldTrafford Test but will enjoy it just as well at home today.

My money definitely on Engerland. Kinda ironic they have a kiwi superhero in Stokes and a West Indian fast bowling superstar and an Irish one day captain. Flag of convenience eh.

I will be cheering for the Pakistanis though for sure.

Thank you and agreed. We cannot just accept unchallenged what authorities feed us.

It was very interesting that last week the UK government ” leaked” a think tank about curtailing the activities of the over 50’s. This was flung out there for a response.

The actual thinking behind the move was sound. The younger generation have virtually no additional risk ( Compared to normal risk ) from Covid 19. Generally if tested positive most are surprised, if they have symptoms they will usually be mild. An immunity could subsequently be built up on this basis.

Most youngsters have complied with the draconian measures ( justified at the time ) They will not voluntary lock down again.

Society needs to acknowledge this and plan accordingly.

PS : I bet the two Aberdeen players were training normally and were gobsmacked when tested positive.

That is interesting. My wife is actually convinced I have had it back in January I would love to get tested to see if that was so.

Every decision being made by those entrusted is agenda ridden. Every briefing put out has bias. It makes it so hard to read and get to the true answer.

Your under 50s scenario really does make sense and rings very true to me.

  9. 10 mins into this Motherwell v Hibs game and no goals – looks like a boring game on a dodgy pitch – as Nish opens the scoring for Hibs 1-0.

‘Did Leigh Griffiths break any rules ?’

    ###

I think it’s more appropriate to ask whether he followed the instructions issued by Celtic.

(I’m assuming Celtic did issue instructions to everyone, and realising the broad spectrum of intellect among the squad and staff, made sure the rules were simple, clear and concise).

If he didn’t follow instructions then his jacket is on a very shooglie nail.

I think we have to bear in mind that seemingly a dose of Covid19 can result in long term loss of cardio vascular function. For elite sportsmen it probably wouldn’t take much of a reduction to finish their careers.

  11. I am not sure how many football fans ( and players) are aware of what ernie said:

” I think we have to bear in mind that seemingly a dose of Covid19 can result in long term loss of cardio vascular function. For elite sportsmen it probably wouldn’t take much of a reduction to finish their careers.”

Were I a professional footballer, I would be strongly considering whether or not I should be playing at all at the moment.

  12. Sky via Walker and Boyd campaigning for Aberdeen’s next 2 matches versus Hamilton and Celtic to be postponed to protect the integrity of the competition, in the same conversation he admits the league might be called early as this is what happened last season. Celtic take note keep up the winning run at all costs and do not postpone matches.

  13. Ernie,

I would suggest that any illness has potentially knock on effects. Interesting you use the word ” seemingly “.

As for Leigh Griffiths. As a vulnerable employee, Celtic have a duty of care to him. We know he has mental health issues and has never been the most intelligent individual.

Have we explained in language he understands and have we monitored him sufficiently.?

    As yet, who knows.

To say they are an exception to society is a kick in the teeth to NHS workers, bus drivers, shop workers and all key workers who have worked through this pandemic without the additional precautions in place for footballers.

Everyone has an agenda, bias etc

I think the rules are pretty clear, if you wanna take risks then that’s fine what seems to be missing from the conversation is that selfish actions may well have consequences for others.

  20. GREENPINATA on 8TH AUGUST 2020 12:56 PM

I used the word seemingly advisedly, because nothing is absolutely certain yet. The truth for now though suggests wide ranging, serious long term health problems for many survivors, the extent and severity of which have surprised medics.

A precautionary approach should therefore be adopted until certainty is achieved.

Your attitude appears cavalier and irresponsible.

I’d just assumed that was understood.

If a players irresponsibility ruins their career that’s their problem but they only have themselves to blame. My main concern would be the damage they might inflict on others.

What would happen if a players selfish actions caused another player to be infected. Wouldn’t do much for team spirit would it?
