Dave Cormack’s empty words

489

“We have been doing local pilots on mental health and wellbeing in Aberdeen which are working.

“The days of booze and betting sponsorships doesn’t really tie in with healthy living and being at the heart of our communities.

“Football can be a magnet for people, healthy living and mental health, so we need to be at the centre of the community.”

The words of Aberdeen chairman, Dave Cormack, spoken less than two weeks ago.  Yesterday, we discovered two of his players tested positive for Covid and a further six have been isolated as all eight attended the pub at the centre of the Aberdeen outbreak.

Mr Cormack, those are empty words.  Today, you are a poster boy for poor governance in healthy living, booze and the caring for the heart of your community.  Your primary task as a director of a football club is to direct the actions of those you control.  What happened?

His interview, in the Daily Record, was full of empty management speech:

“Something I think we have to explore at the centre to drive an agenda.

“What do we want to be? What is our vision? I don’t know what the vision is. We don’t have a branding strategy.

“At the centre, it’s not run like a real company that would have a vision, a branding strategy or goals to drive income.

“The cup is half full, how can we drive things?”

It’s like he had just finished watching a very poor Ted Talk on business growth by an entrepreneur who sold for millions and has no idea how it happened.  Or maybe that’s really him.

Scottish football is the great grounder of egos.  Think your business background gives you better insight and decision making than those in an industry you’ve never worked in?  Buy Hearts or Aberdeen and find out.  Think that your experience as on the Conservative Party – Scottish executive while Tony Blair earned a landslide prepared you for anything?  Maybe you should become chief exec at Partick Thistle?

Football players have been granted ‘sports bubble’ special status, when they abuse that privilege by hitting busy pubs, they have let us all down.

    There’s no certainty…

The clinical evidence has been clear for some number of months that if Coronavirus infects the lungs it causes tissue fibrosis and consequent long term debility.

What’s now emerging is that the virus attacks many cell types that express ACE2 receptor. This includes vasculature, heart and nervous system.

Around 20% of recovered Covid-19 patients (26 studies, >11,000 patients) are now showing significant damage to heart tissue – acute myocardial injury.

    These conditions are not reversible.

Public health professionals are now planning on how to deal with long term morbidity of large numbers of previously healthy people across all age groups.

Should a professional athlete develop Covid disease – that is, deep lung infection – their career is in all likelihood at an end.

In these chronically unsettling times we all look for good news, hope, straws to clutch.

There will be good news in due course when the researchers crack a treatment or vaccine, but for now there is neither and the risks to health and life are largely unchanged.

They haven’t caught the shark yet, Mayor Vaughn, and it remains unwise to go swimming.

There are numerous vaccine trials happening throughout the world here’s hoping at least one is effective.

You would have thought China would have had an antidote before letting the virus out.

    Other theories are available.

England now 2 wickets down -but probably just favourites now.

  4. If the big guy Alfredo is valued at £16.25mill, it must be because his rather swollen body mass must contain lots of antibodies, I’m thinking double that of Yir average athlete (athlete those were the days). In this day and age it might well be worth a punt to see what’s “under the bunnet”.

Ps no real footballers were harmed by my post.

Hun will no be happy reading this:

And Voller is expecting a far tougher test against Antonio Conte’s outfit, who he admits are miles ahead of Rangers.

There’s no comparison with Rangers, the Nerazzurri have players with class, a great coach, they concede very few goals and they have a really well-matched strike pairing.

    What this gent said.

Fibrosis of the lungs is a terrible condition. So too is a permanently damaged heart. Heart Failure is a term often bandied about, but too seldom treated with the fear it should be.

    Stay safe.

  9. Parish priest has just returned from an annual get together of his society – St Jean Vianne – in France. Wasn’t impressed about the lack of social distancing among both priests and public. Anyway the sad news but not unexpected is that he’s postponed our Camino de Santiago until next May or June.

I think it’s the cost implications of the long term health problems that are giving politicians the fear as much as anything else.

I’m not trying to trump you in any way over early Covids but I am certain my daughter had this thing i early February.

Someone else said she stayed at the Edinburgh hotel just after the Nike conference and never felt as ill in her life.

  20. Fritzsong Burnley 78, Mrs TT who has an autoimmune condition took Ill on Hogmanay just after we had prepared the following days dinner. She had pains in her side for a couple of days and had earlier tripped over the dugs leash, both ways, so we put the aches down tae that.

However it got that bad around hauf seven that she thought she was having a heart attack. Straight tae the emergency then. They had her on fenalyn and then morphine and other assorted drugs, oxygen as well.

She was in ICU for 6 days before they let her out and that was only because the cardiologist, who after examining her ecg, said she could go.

The hospital by the way was full of oul people with flu like systems, anyway they said she had a collapsed lower left lung but there was something else there and they could identify it.

She still struggles going for walks and naps a lot, I know she’s no spring chicken but she used tae have lots of energy.

She regularly visits the Toronto Western Hospital twice a year for a chronic illness she has and has her release papers in here which she was going tae take down with her. That appointment was cancelled as they had an outbreak of Covid not too long ago. Mibbees, just mibbees we’ll go in October. BTW she was there at in December, could she have picked something up there.

    Covid 19, more than probably.

  21. BTW that should have read there was something else there they couldnae identify. Since then youngest daughter and both her weans who live up the road fae us have had mild cases of it and that was verified by their GP.

  22. My daughter had her first driving lesson post lockdown this morning.

The instructer checked the wee yins temperature, but he did not wear a mask at all and told my daughter she didn’t have to wear one if she didn’t want to.

She stupidly, in my opinion, did not wear one.

Anyone know the regulations for driving lessons please?

To say I’m annoyed is an understatement.

  23. We could be in 5th position starting at Rugby Park tomorrow, or even 6th if the Buddies draw at the Bigotdome. It is important to win every game, just in case the league gets called again prior to the finish.

  25. Never thought I would agree with new Scottish Con leader Douglas Ross on any subject but I do.

On Newsnight last night he specifically opposed the decision, by the SQA, to downgrade the (assessed) results of thousand of young Scottish pupils/student to their lasting detriment. Specifically, in that he accused the SQA, of using an algorithm to make these decisions, based on historic results for this or that school, or school area. Ross called it unacceptable, for once he is right. Take the title SQA-The Scottish Qualifications Authority. Break it down. I have no problem with the word Scottish obviously, but what about the use of the word “Qualifications” not “Education” as before, or “Authority” as opposed to “Department”. Not the Scottish Education Department then, but the language of, well, an authoritarian. Had this been a normal year when all students actually took examinations, when papers could be re-marked, that might be different, but no students did, and yet they are being judged on the results of those who did in the past.

Dougie didn’t say it, though he should have,
