de Vries, defending corners, lessons from Darnell

478

With Logan Bailly out injured, Celtic are down to two keepers, Craig Gordon (33) and Leo Fasan (22).  That’s insufficient for the months ahead, which will see the club play eight European games, the visit of our perennial league rivals, Aberdeen later this month, as well as seeing the League Cup come to a conclusion.

So the reasoning behind Dorus de Vries (35) pitching up for a medial at Ross Hall this morning is clear.  What remains to be seen, is whether Brendan Rodgers reckons the Dutchman, whom he won promotion with at Swansea, is a safer pair of hands than Craig Gordon.

de Vries won Notting Forest supporters’ Player of the Year last season, a significant accolade for a keeper, so Stevie Woods can look forward to working with a genuine contender for first choice.

As we witnessed even against an outclassed Motherwell on Wednesday, defending corner kicks remains a problem for Celtic, which will again cost us dearly in Europe if the issue is not resolved.  How Dorus matches up in this area may well determine who gets the nod.

A word on Darnell Fisher.  He has the talent to perform more than adequately for Alan Stubbs at Rotherham, but he was judged not to have sufficient enthusiasm for getting back to do his day job, after venturing forward to assist attacks, which finished him at Celtic.

In this respect he didn’t fit the Ronny model, but the next generation of young full backs have come through having learned a lesson.

Is John Kennedy the defensive coach?

If he is does he take the credit for the record breaking defence in 14/15 season with VVD and Denayer in centre defence? Or does he just take the criticism when he has inferior players to work with?

  3. Why would someone like BR let JK marshall his defence, it makes no sense at all…

JK is part of the team I doubt he or ever has had complete responsibility for the defence..

  4. Gary67

Under Dolf’s tutelidge the defence was tight, organised and hard to beat. JK has been coaching since then. This coincides with a decline in our ability to defend set pieces which is on-going.

If you’re happy with how this is shaping up that’s fair enough. I’d prefer something different along with the going forward improvements which are clearly happening…

  5. For all the Loonys out there we’re on TSN2 live next Wednesday.

On the subject of demonstrating against an Israel side, wasn’t it found out that the last time we played one at Parkheid the leader of the group organising a protest outside the ground and handing out Pally flags was actually a rabid hun.

Also didn’t the followers of a now deid team get away with doing the “sieg heil” in Israel.

  6. Being a non betting person, what odds would I get for Celtic scoring 100 league goals this season?

  7. I still have faith in Craig Gordon, however he needs a real challenge for the number 1 slot.

Hopefully Dorus de Vries will provide the level of competition that will “up” Craig’s game and cut out the lack of judjement that seem to happen far too often to Craig.

I have a sneeky feeling that this move would have occured without the injury to Logan Bailly.

    Hail, Hail.

  8. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Disappointed for Fisher, thought the lad was a standout when watching him in the youth set up and expected him to make the step up much sooner.

Big Sadie annoyed met ‘other night when he lost the ball and forgot to chase it down allowing the Motherwell player to run into our box. He gets very disheartened when he makes a bad pass or looses the ball, but he dwells on it and forgets he has duties to perform, switching off for a few seconds will cost the team dearly in his position so he better get over it quick. If I’ve seen it then Brendan has seen it too so I expect to see a change of this foible soon.

  9. Didn’t realise Bailey was injured so the imminent signing makes more sense – as I’ve heard some of the goalkeeping coaches rate Bailey above Gordon. Hopefully he’s not cost a huge amount as at that age he’s a very temporary signing. With Toure the experience for the kids alone would probably be worth it, not so sure the same applies for a keeper when we have Gordon at a decent age and experience.

Not sure what area of the pitch would be needed to strengthen most. Not convinced at right back. Janko is an engine but not convinced by his passing or crossing. Lustig is hit and miss right now.

  10. Big Pierre's 2 front teeth on

Kennedy should be no where near our first or second team. Particularly don’t like that he’s sat there quietly to keep a job he knows he’s under-qualified for when Ronny and Collins left. Get him oot!

  11. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Was babbling about Lustig at centre half years ago and glad to see he performed well hope he is used more in that position his tackling is second to no one in that position and rarely gives away free kicks.

  12. Go tell the Spartim on

Whilst id take Bastian in a heartbeat, who will we realistically get seeing as its the most obvious position to strengthen, as you know we will have to do without Brown when those paragons of virtue, Neilson (Baillieston Hun) and Budge get their way

  13. Welcome Celtic, to Historic Limerick.

To all the Celtic Fans arriving in the historic city of Limerick for tomorrows big game against Inter, Tá Fáilte Roimh go Léir.

    A few items of interest about this beautiful city on the Shannon;

Originally settled by the Vikings ( 9th century) it was built for it’s strategic position as the first place to ford the mighty river as you come upstream from the Atlantic ocean.

The high King of Ireland, Brian Boru, had a seat here and was a an Irish stronghold until the coming of the Normans in 1169.

A huge castle was built here in 1200 AD by the Norman,King John. This castle was the scene of three major sieges, the most famous in 1691 after the Battle of the Boyne, when the remnants of the defeated Irish army chose to leave Ireland forever. They became known as the Wild Geese and served with distinction throughout Europe in various wars over the next decades.

The Treay signed at the end of the siege was quickly broken by the House of Orange and lands were soon to be confiscated from the native Irish Catholics and given to loyalist invaders.

After the siege a new city, adjacent to the old walls was built with money invested by the wealthy Landed Gentry. This new town was (uniquely in Ireland) built in a grid formation.

For those interested in historical architecture, there are some perfectly preserved, (still in use), Georgian buildings.

Also St Mary’s Cathederal (900 years old) in Old Limerick, is well worth a visit

Industrially, Limerick was famous for it’s Bacon factories, it’s Lace and it’s Clothing factories. Indeed, during the American Civil War, enterprising clothing companies made uniforms for both sides.

Limerick played a prominent role in the war in the Fenian rising, John Daly, was a leader who suffered terrible punishment after imprisonment. His niece, Kathleen, later married Tom Clarke, the 1916 leader.

Limerick was also the site of the first Soviet, outside of Russia, when in 1919 (April 15th to 27th) local Trade Unionists refused to use British Passes to enter and leave the main city. They formed their own government and issued their own currency, only to be defeated when the Unions in the UK refused to back them.

The city suffered during the occupation by the Black and Tans and again during the civil war.

It is of course, famous as the home of Irish rebel, Sean Sabhat, whose grave is in Mount St Laurence cemetery.

The city has become far more vibrant in the last 20 years, since the enlargement of it’s great university. The selection of music, arts, and sport are equal to any in Ireland.

The population have a great love of rugby union, which in other parts of Ireland was considered an upper class sport.

Thomond Park, where our game takes place, is known as the Spiritual Home of Irish rugby. Holding app 28,000, it is a magnificent piece of architecture.

The famous Paul O’Connell once graced it’s field and tomorrow, his nephew, our very own Eoghann, will hopefully follow in his footsteps.

For those interested in history, I would advise a trip to King Johns Castle or the Hunt museum.

If you have transport, the world famous Cliffs of Moher , are roughly an hours drive away.

We in the Patrick Sarsfield CSC will be holding a get together in O’Briens Bar, (formerly Magners) on Roches Street, tonight.

After the game tomorrow night join us for an evening of ballads and music, again in O’Briens with the sounds of the excellent local Ballad Group; The Limerick Men.

Above all, have a great time. Hail, Hail.

  14. Has Wee Deoch an Dorus signed yet?

It’ll be a braw bricht moonlicht nicht the night with the ole Tears of St Lawrence…or was that last night..?

So if we are to believe JK is defensive coach (which I don’t) then under his tutelage we had a record breaking defence the season before last. If he takes criticism for last season, he should take credit for the season before. If he is the constant, it’s the calibre of defender that’s declined. Is it coincidence that we defended corners well at Tynecastle with Kolo in the team?

  20. So only a striker to be added to the mix now – then the revolving-door will only be going one-way.

What now for: Commons, Bitton, GMS, Henderson, Ambrose and Cifti – will they join Stokes, Fisher, Cole, Kazim and Scepovic?

I was thinking a defensive mid rather than striker. We had a lot of midfielders though, so…

Just opinions. You’re happy with the coaching. I’m not. We didn’t lose a goal at Tynecastle but our set piece defending was still nervy and poorly executed. It’s a major weakness. If it improves I’ll be the first to recognise and congratulate the coach.

I am just in and had a quick look at CQN before running off to another meeting, and saw you were on. So I wanted to apologize for bailing mid-conversation last night. A matter came up at the office (time difference and all) which needed to be attended to somewhat urgently. Normally, I try to sign off when that happens, but just did’t get the chance this itme

I have to be honest and say that my recollection of the procedure in the Farry mess isn’t great, but I would enjoy discussing further, once I have had a chance to refresh my memory on that.

  25. Defending corners and crosses requires two things: organisation and aggression.

Everyone should know their job and attack the ball with aggression. Same as attacking corners and crosses.

    It’s not rocket science.

The keeper is key to the organisation of it. A shout either way (keepers ball or ‘away’) is mandatory. If he calls it he has to move everything in front of him to make sure he gets it.

Aggression and knowing your job. That is all.
