Dear Mrs Budge

254

Tynecastle has been a source of intolerant abuse for decades.  Visitors, including the Celtic support, have endured the most offensive behaviour imaginable.  This is ongoing and culminated in our manager being assaulted in his technical area recently.

It is the easiest thing in the world to throw abuse at others while being blind to your own fans’ behaviour.  It is merely adequate to criticise your own while pointing out the errors of others, for example – Celtic fans who vandalise are knuckle-dragging idiots – it’s that easy.

We await your apology public to Anthony Stokes for the sectarian abuse he received at your stadium.

My hunch is that you’ll body-swerve this one, that you don’t know sectarian abuse from public comments the Scottish authorities have made illegal in order to “equalise” the offenders, and this intervention will encourage the galleries of intolerance at Tynecastle.

Signing event in Stirling

Joe Miller will be at Waterstones in Stirling tomorrow (Thurs) from 5pm to sign copies of Caesar and the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s account of managing Celtic from 1978 to 1991, told in their own words to Alex Gordon.

Joe is a great character who worked under McNeill, Hay and Alex Ferguson, and now heads the Celtic Former Players Association.  If you’re in the Stirling area, get along and bring your camera.

The 2015 CQN Annual is through design and ready to ship next week. You can pre-order yours now.

I thought so too, I thought the high pressing game, resulting in change of possession around their box (evident in at least two of the goals) and the overall movement was superb. new system beginning to suit the Bhoys like Twardzik ? Probably, although I haven’t seen them enough to confirm.

  2. The definition of irony. The jam tarts are a wretched bunch, as we all know. Much like their cousins across the M8.

Not seeing it is not the same as saying it never happened or that every Celt is innocent.

If you have never seen our fans vandalise a toilet, throw a coin or scribble graffiti, then you have every right to disbelieve the Budge statement.

I found it quite a measured statement which called out her own fans first of all, hardy the behaviour of an “out to get Celtic at all costs” bigot. That does not mean I believe every charge made is true or that there was a near riot (The support came as close as I’ve seen to rioting when Neil was attacked and 3 stands full of Hearts fans applauded the attack).

I think we will soon see the evidence and, even if it is smaller than claimed, it still happened.

It would be educative to see what Celtic are paying in bills to other teams after away fixtures and compare that with what we bill other teams. If the money was significant and as it comes out of every paying supporter’s pocket, would that alter anything in your view?

  4. proudbhoy

I don’t think they’ll be any hesitation by Ronny to put the bhoys in domestically later in the season especially considering our pending run to the Europa final………

  5. I don’t go to many away games, and will happily admit to not being best placed to comment on Ann Budge’s comments from the perspective of attending these games.

What I can say is that she has been a welcome change since her arrival . She is a genuine fan and has spent her own hard earned money to save her club. She has no history of grandstanding , nor it seems to me to have any ego issues. She also earned her money the old fashioned way, by setting up a business operating it well and ethically and sold to a multi national for a fair and full value.

For the avoidance of doubt that is a whole lot more respectable than shafting creditors, not repaying bank loans, not fulfilling your pension responsibilities and lying in your teeth about your business every time you arranged for a business journalist to ask you pre-approved questions.

Where I think Ann Budge has got this wrong is choosing Celtic as her target for such a public censure. For a number of reasons.

1 She is now a hostage to fortune , in as much as she will have to make similar public condemnations against any and all supports of all clubs if there are any acts of vandalism and abuse .

2 . Hearts have a very large and very vocal away support. Their choice of songbook on occasion is less than exemplary. There have been many instances of violence committed by Hearts fans , not least against Celtic and not least in and around Tynecastle Stadium. Ann Budge could be very busy issuing statements if she intends to robustly condemn her own support for all of their own unsavoury actions

    3. I hope for her sake that there have been no previous instances of sectarianism , vandalism or violence at Tynecastle by a visiting support this season, that she has failed to condemn. I think we all know this is unlikely, and no doubt proof will emerge and she may well be accused of selective judgement.

4 Equally , if there were any acts of sectarianism or vandalism at Celtic Park , caused by Hearts supporters earlier this year, then she is going to look pretty silly.

Having said all of that, i will repeat what I said at the start. Ann Budge is a credible , respected business person who is a welcome addition to the ranks of SPFL owners. I just think on this occasion it would have been better to have dealt with this privately with Celtic.

    Turning to the Celtic support.

IF , and I wasn’t there, so can’t state with certainty, the support are guilty as charged then this is quite disgraceful. I have no reason to disbelieve Ann Budge and in any case i’m sure she has proof .

A Celtic supporter who vandalises seats ,or graffiti’s a stadium has no right to support or sympathy. I condemn them unequivocally . Not only would i not want to be anywhere near them at a Celtic game, I wouldn’t want to be in their company under any circumstances.

Sectarian behaviour is reprehensible. Some of what is labelled sectarian is clearly and obviously such. Again i want no part of this in any shape and detest such intolerance. The problem is that some of what is labelled sectarian is no such thing. However if the nature of the accusations are that Celtic supporters abused anyone based on religion or race then that is shameful.

Celtic will take a zero tolerance line with anyone guilty of any offence of the nature described by Ann Budge. They will also take a one strike and your out policy. The club can’t do any more. The rest is down to the fans .

  6. Martim….

How can you say it happened if you haven’t seen the evidence, and when – in Edinburgh – did evidence equate to guilt?

I won’t condemn anybody on one persons word alone. Just like I never condemed the GB at Motherwell, the fans at Dundee nor the smearing of Tonev either.

If there is quantifiable proof, then let’s be having it then we can all get as sanctimonious as we like, I’ll even hand out the first stones.

    Paul67,

Well done, Could there be a very powerful hearts supporter using the club to promote an agenda ?

When was this hearts statement drafted ?

Not surprised at the numbers on here that knee jerk and accept so quickly, without question.

You made it clear to me at least, all offenders are ‘knuckle draggers’ and I agree, we probably disagree what is offensive behaviour, not being one who takes much offence at people swearing.

This whole exercise is FoCUSed on whataboutery and the family angle is a cover to FoCUS on making Celtic supporters the source of offence.

Cant blame him for not giving the young bhoys much game time yet.. alot of our fans havent given ronnie much time.

Seeing the abuse mcgregor gets aswel would mean a manager needs to be very protective of the young bhoys.

It’s worse than that at Celtic, a lot don’t get one strike, hearsay is enough to have supporters banned.

  11. I haven’t read back so appols if posted already.

That statement from Ms Budge was an attack on our club, end of.

She was asked about attracting familys to the game, she had no need to mention anything else.

This sort of thing happens at every game every week, yet we are the only ones in the firing line.

Not condoning the vandalism, if indeed there was any.

Get the eff out of this sectarian ridden league Celtic, it’s killing us.

    HH

  12. Paul,

Almost always agree with you, but cannot do so about the Budge comments. She seems a pretty decent and sensible woman. The “past should be in past” and we should take the present situation and try and improve. Morons deter decent fans from going to games. They should be weeded out of every club, including ours. I have been to games where our fans threw bottles (in the 50’s and 60’s) and games where our fans applauded victorious opposition of our field. We all know which fans we would rather be among.

  13. Hamiltontim

Good post mate, in your opinion since Neil was attacked over there have Hearts made or management or players or support any safer? The reason I ask is I saw the cli of the Jambo clown falling over the wall as he came down to abuse Izzy I think it was and it looked to me he could have just as easily been on the park as the thug who attacked Neil.

As I said, I wasn’t at Tynecastle on this occasion. In the company of the Celtic support I have seen mindless vandalism, seat breaking and objects being thrown. It is neither widespread nor totally unheard of.

The Budge statement is one of the more measured and careful statement which tries, though it fails, to be even handed.

I have merely accepted that, since we have fallen below our own expectations before, we are likely to have done something wrong on this occasion too. I don’t think accepting that position is sanctimonious at all. Believing it all would be gullible. Believing none of it would be taking scepticism to a level of cynicism.

It is not wrong to call out our support when they have done something wrong. It is wrong to single us out. That fault is committed by the media and not by Ann Budge who has called out her own support too.

  16. Dear Mrs Budge

I consider it totally indefensible that there were so many empty seats at Tynecastle on Sunday. If your club cannot fill the stadium in a cup game against the champions then what promise do you carry in your quest for promotion? Unless of course those empty seats are those of ticket holders serving lifetime bans for previous misdemenours when Celtic come to town….

  17. setting free the bears for Res. 12 & Oscar Knox

    That was my point too.

Press only know one method. Attack Celtic

  18. proudbhoy

I think the McGregor barracking is a more complex issue.

He was warmly greeted by the Celtic support during his first half a dozen games. It was only when he became an established pick and the fact that he kept on being selected after a drop in form that led to disquiet. Most of the fans were angry with Ronny more than Callum, though a few did question his work rate, which seemed odd to me as the boy has got to where he has by working hard and applying himself. there are more talented boys in our youth set up but Callum has a bit of drive and dig about him that means he has maximised his skills more than they have.

  19. Starry

I’ve not seen anything that wasn’t there before Neil Lennon was attacked apart from an area of vacated seats which would house Hearts supporters previously. Oh and usually their most vitriolic element.

    Strange that don’t ye think?!

    SFTB

I’m at the Ticket Office just now I’ll hopefully get a chance to reply later.

  20. Mrs Budge’s statement is interesting on a few fronts. Firstly if any of her claims about misbehaviour from the Celtic support are true, then they should be condemned by our club and supporters. This behaviour is not wanted or needed.

She deliberately ignores the sectarian elephant in the room. The abuse received by our players and fans at that ground consistently over the years has been nothing short of scandalous. Aided and abetted by lethargic cops and stewards who merely stand-by when anti-Irish and anti-Catholic slogans are directed at players and fans alike by easily identified individuals.

Predominantly this occurs in the two corners closest to the Celtic end where they are also very prone to throwing missiles.

Her mention of arrests is even more revealing as it underlines the inactivity of the police in the Hearts end. They’d rather harass a kid with a Palestine T shirt than arrest a bigot abusing Anthony Stokes. Our players have the match ball launched at them and abused every time they are close to those stands which provide that special Tynecastle atmosphere. It’s time to look closer at your own midden Mrs Fudge sorry Budge.

One plea to the Celtic support-please drop the ridiculous GBTP addition to the Irish National Anthem. Historically embarrassing.

Sorry mate, I still can’t agree with you as it stands, I have had heated debates with many people over convictions based on ‘the balance of probability’, and I too have seen some bad things done by Celtic Supporters in the past.

When I hear the ‘balance of probability’ pre-lynching, I tend to remember the Guildford four and the presiding judge Mr Justice Donaldson words…. Lucky he never had the power of life and death.
