Defence need to play-up for their keeper

812

First the treble then the double slipped through the net leaving Celtic absolute certainties for the inaugural Scottish Premiership title, but with only a couple of higher aspirations to aim for.  Fraser Forster is closing in on Bobby Clark’s Aberdeen league shut out record, which if he keeps a clean sheet at home to St Johnstone on Sunday, he would be able to eclipse 31 minutes into the visit to Tynecastle on 22 February.

Neil Lennon called Saturday’s defeat unacceptable but it would be just as unacceptable to concede to St Johnstone at home this weekend when so close to an all-time record.    Saints have scored only one league goal away from home (at Firhill) since winning at Tynecastle on 2 November last year.  Notwithstanding their four Cup goals at Forfar on Saturday, you could not wish for a more goal-shy league visitors.

The manager was rightly critical of his defence on Saturday so will hopefully use this weekend to ensure they are ready to play up for their goalkeeper this Sunday.

One of the highlights for the Celtic community last year was the incredible Ben Nevis Huddle, completed on the snow-capped mountain in June. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, 28 June. Applications opened on Friday and there are only 77 places left (big mountain but limited safe standing capacity). Go here if you want to get involved.

  1. skyisalandfill c'mon wee Oscar on

    Afternoon all.

I did my customary avoidance of the blog after the game so not read much back.

It seems that we are not too happy about the defeat and the manner of the defeat. Fair enough. Can’t disagree. I arrived about 15 mins late so even missed Tony’s goal. Performance very poor. From what I saw we only had a ten to fifteen minute spell misway through the second half that we looked like we wanted to win the game. Other than that a very flat performance. Fair play to Aberdeen for wanting it more.

I realised, on my drive down to CP on Saturday morning that I had left my ticket at home. Dunderheid. Called the TO and the guy was very helpful and told me to go to the TO and present my ST and they would print off a duplicate. After driving to Linwood prior to the game to see a man about a dog, I was running late and only just caught the TO as it was closing. Got sorted out.

You may remember that I complained to JP Taylor about having to play full price for my ticket. Well following some telephone discussions with the ever helpful Anne-Marie at the TO, she phoned this morning and gave me a reimbursement of the £5. Excellent service from the club. Well done Celtic.

All in all a pretty rubbish sporting weekend with the hoops, Scotland and Elgin City (home town team) all losing. Further misery heaped on during Sunday morning when my Motherwell supporting mate thrashed me at golf on a very wet Buchanon Castle.

I’m sure it’s already been pointed out but the only silver lining from Saturday is that we now have no chance of playing against the tribute act this season. That alone is a cause for a wee smile.

    HH

The defence was not good on Saturday but surely NL has to face up to the fact that when a team is defeated in the midfield then the outcomes are that the defence is going to be overrun and the forwards will not get service. The problem was in the middle of the park and, i am afraid, that is the responsibility of the manager because of the manner in which he lined his team up.

  5. I had an e-mail exchange with my good friend tamrabam earlier today along the lines of ger57’s earlier post, my thoughts for what they are worth.

    “Tam,

I read your piece yesterday and if you were pessimistic you could become very depressed with the entire scenario and where it is heading but by our very nature and particularly our rebellious streak, mines and almost certainly yours, does not allow us to get too depressed about Celtic save for the 24 hours after another defeat.

I believe we are heading swiftly towards another watershed moment in the Club’s history, if we stand still then Celtic are going to become the biggest loser in this whole corruption and cheating facade that has unfolded in Scotland. Four years ago, Lawwell and Lennon went around the country trying to sell Lenny as our next manager. IMO, what is happening now is way more important than those roadshows, Lawwell urgently needs to reconnect with the Celtic supporter base first-up, not his brand identity or his customers but the Club’s fans. He has to understand fully (if he is not already aware then he is definitely not too bright) that if he continues with the status quo then he is heading to the same museum as messers Kelly and White. He should be urgently looking at getting roadshows organised all over Scotland, Ireland and to a lesser extent, England, USA/Canada, Aus/Asia and ME/Europe, from these he should be LISTENING to ideas good and bad and from there he should have a committee of Celtic minded individuals who are able to thrash out a way forward for the Club, one that will see us re-united as a support ( as much as we can be!) but he needs to lead from the front, not send his lackey JPT out in his place. Dermot Desmond needs to start attending AGM’s and treat the support with some respect.

There is a plethora of subjects that we could go over that could be either initiated or improved that would give a better matchday experience, as I don’t get there very often these days I may be wrong but I will give you a feel of my last visit in 2012.

Took the boy to Celtic v ICT in late November, North Stand seats 31 quid each for tickets, very average food on offer at high cost, Green Brigade boycotting due to harassment, zero atmosphere and a 0-1 loss. A week earlier we were in Cologne and went to see Bayer Leverkusen v Schalke 04 at the Bayer arena. About 32 quid each for premium seats in the stadium, opposing fans set up at either end of the ground with loud hailers, massive flags and boisterous supporters. Atmosphere excellent, alcohol on sale in the stadium, good food all around, all bought on an electronic season card that can have money uploaded on to it like a debit card, no hassle with the away fans outside or at the station despite the bevvy, excellent football as well, like night and day compared with the Scottish experience. It seriously cannot be that difficult for those in power at Celtic to see what others in Europe are doing. This is just a starter for ten but it could keep us talking for a long time.

Lawwell needs to start talking and start listening sooner rather than later.”

Ledley has gone and didn’t want to stay. Forget about him.

Mulgrew was a much bigger loss to the midfield. He provides dig, goals and much needed heigh in the air as well as a good dead ball. Charlie is a huge player for this Celtic team.

I’m not sure if it’s as clean cut as blaming the midfield.

I was watching Lenny shouting at the defence to step up to the halfway line the whole game. He was having a real go at them. I guess he wanted a compact formation that would have allowed the defence to help out the midfield, instead the midfield was left isolated against 3 or 4 Aberdeen players.

I’m not blaming the midfield. I have never criticised NL before but it was his formation and team selection. When it became clear to everyone that it was not working he did not respond appropriately. It’s all about opinions, I suppose, and I’m still hurting.

Wongs in the St Enoch food court appear to have adopted the ‘western’ new year.

There’s also a Burger King restaurant in the food court should either you or your dining partner fancy steak for your main course.

  16. Bournesrecipe – I do have some suggestions :)

    Direct actions

    1. Announce the intention to support youth development in remaining fixtures

    2. Have pay at the gate options for a reduced price

    3. Free entrance to under 12’s

    4. Announce intention to support standing area(s) inside the ground, along with a target date for implementation. Work towards that now by selling tickets for that area

    Indirect actions

    1. Provide a facility for fans to ask questions of the manager about team selections and tactics – Celtic TV an obvious option

    2. Provide access to training ground for fans to observe the players close up

    3. Adopt a style of football that works in Europe and work on this for the remainder of the season

    4. Hire an experienced European coach on a part time consultative basis to help NL

    5. Hire a dedicated coach for the forwards (Why do teams have goalkeeping coaches and not for other areas of the park?)

    6. Hire a VP of Customer Service

  24. TheHonest Mistake@15-41

    There in lies the problem.

Coach should have the spacing and system refined on the training ground.

The fact he was shouting it that whole game suggests he does not possess the wherewithal to implement his desired formation properly.

I have been saying for a few seasons that our spacing and systems implementation are flawed.

Neil has some good ideas but unfortunately seems incapable of bringing those to fruition.

He lacks the ability to complete the job.
