Defences, views and runs

We can take some comfort in the fact that Salzburg have lost three games on the bounce but they sit in second spot in the Austrian Bundesliga, Celtic are fourth in the Scottish Premiership and have won only one of their previous five games.  The Austrians will see just as much comfort in our form.

Success on Thursday will be determined by who manages to overcome their frailties most effectively.  As far as Celtic are concerned, that will mean trying to find the kind of defensive performance that we put in last season.

Our reason for most confidence should be the speed which we can break at, and Salzburg’s only defensive issues.  They shipped three goals to Sturm Graz and Malmo in recent outings.

Many thanks to everyone who has already taken our ‘Who we are and Our Values’ survey, it took just over 1 hour to register 1,000 submissions.  It’ll take you little more than 5 minutes to share your view on some important matters, take a look here.

I’m a wee bit late to the party but I’ve signed up for the Great Scottish Run on 5 October to assist Celtic Foundation’s work in the areas of health, equality, poverty, and learning.  If you’ve already registered with the event, or you have a pair of trainers and an outrageous disregard for the aging process, get involved.

You can register for the Great Scottish Run here and with the Foundation be emailing them, details here.

This is our club, they are your trainers, that is your outrageous disregard for the aging process.  Let’s do it.

  3. At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious what is the point of still arguing about the Referendum on here? The Ernies and NegAon2 will still be voting No and MWD be voting Yes .Imay be wrong but has

Yes I’ve recovered, as I’ve recovered from the sectarianism that I’ve encountered in Scotland.

I’m not trying to score points here and I’m not even intentionally linking it to the referendum.

My intent was to highlight the ludicrous suggestion that sectarianism is a blight only by Scots in Scotland.

    That’s not the case.

And my intent was to highlight that sectarianism is not rife in England. And just before I go, it appears to be conveniently ignored by a lot of posters on here but there are an awful lot of poor people in England, there are a lot of hungry, homeless people here, there are a lot of unemployed, there are many food banks, there are many underprivileged sick and elderly, there are many patients awaiting treatment, and there are millions upon millions of working class guys who don’t live in fancy big houses in Surrey.

There but for the grace of God and the charity of my neighbours….

there are issues for people all around the world.

Do you suggest that Scotland stays in the UK were these issues cannot be resolved under the current WM political climate of which I see no end as do many like me, or should we attempt to try to eradicate at least part of the problem in our own country via independence. Sorry but the arguement that we should stay and sty an improve something that will never change is moot. WM has gone too far down a path that I believe it will never return. If a no vote occurs we will not see a single change for the better for anyone in the UK.

I am happy to seperate politically and help those of us in Scotland. maybe that alone will raise those in England to stand up and be counted.

Or maybe we should go for a singlr world government were all the poor wioll keep sufferrring while all the rich smile down in glee.

  12. Jonny The Tim @ 14.09 – I think you will need more than a tin hat to protect yourself from that utter drivel. No voters are basically thick, rich bigots then? Nice one.

I know plenty of No voters, PLENTY, none of them are thick, rich and they come from both sides of the sectarian divide that you have brought into this. They have ALL, every one of them, looked into the arguments and came to their decision. The over riding theme for most of them is if I have to choose between two sets of total liars, (and if you can’t see both sides are lying to you you are the one with the problem) then I will stick with the devil I know.

You do realise attitudes like the one you have just displayed have done far more harm to the Yes cause than you realise? When that sort of tosh is bandied about it is what creates the situation there is at the moment where a large amount of No voters do not want to say so as that is the attitude they are faced with. This means there are huge amounts of voters who are not available to the Yes campaign to “persuade”.

I have seen various flavours of what you have posted and it is insidious and downright stupid to make assumptions such as that. Don’t be so arrogant to assume that your assessment of the facts, as you read them, is the gospel truth and therefore anyone who disagree’s is thick.

I really like the Bhoy as a man. An amazing ambassador for our club. Similarities to Sammi in many ways.

In terms of those folk who feel criticise him…….well in terms of my observations……

    1. He ain’t fat. Never said he was……

    2. But he ain’t fast either. And no-one gets faster with age. There was a situation against Maribor where he was past the last man just inside their half and was reeled in quick time. That’s just how it is. I can accept that. But surely we can also accept that it limits his ability to break forward and cover back.

    3. His first touch. I’ve always loved how he lets the ball ran across his body and then moves onto it. A great eg for any youngster or CQN 5s bods! And/but I’ve also said that on occasion it’s as though he has a ‘lucky bad’ first touch which kinda bobbles off him and past the covering defender. And then other times his touch (and often shots) are sublime.

But I do think his lack of pace and occasional mis-touch can be found out at the higher levels (an observation that could be made of Mulgrew still more pointedly).

    4. And I did think on Sat that on several occasions he had options in front for a quicker or 1st time ball and that with new, swifter forwards this will become more common.

    5. And I didn’t say ‘bin him’, nor did I say I wouldn’t offer him a contract. I’m such a sentimental old fool that I’d still have Bobby Lennox on the playing staff! But looking at RD’s priority for pace and PL’s level of sentimentality which I don’t think accords with my own…. on that basis I wouldn’t be surprised if the Moneyball Inc crew decide that offering him a contract isn’t vfm and seek to get McGregor to take over – perhaps a season too soon?

    That’s where I’m coming from ghuys……

With respect, it is entirely understandable that this blog, as will most of Scottish society discuss the most important constitutional decision of our generation and our children’s generation.

It may not be the normal topic of choice on a football blog but this is not normal times. As this decision will also impact the future of Celtic football club I think it is appropriate to discuss the possible consequences for Celtic supporters.

You may be correct that debate will not change the mind-set or voting intention of those eligible to vote but on the whole it has been civilised and informative. Personally I have read articles from both sides that I was unaware of.

It would be more worrying if such an important decision was irrelevant to CQN’ers.

Our Canadian cousins can go and say a decade of the Rosary for all the relevance they have to this referendum.

They can’t in all credibility support Scottish independence while denying Quebec.

What do you expect them to say?

  18. TBB @14.16

A quick google for headlines of Scottish independence appears to support your view.

An absolute blitzkrieg of negative headlines with the most ridiculous logic and from some of the most random sources.

My feelings are these headlines have emanated from people who are more concerned about the effects of a weakened U.K. and it would be better for them that Scotland remain as is…. regardless.

  22. If the YES vote is all about fairness and social justice rather than narrow-minded nationalist fervour, how do the YES camp assuage their guilt about effectively leaving all of their socialist brethren in huge swathes of Wales and England to a future dominated by perpetual Tory Rule?

Below is an extract I came across on a Sunderland Fans Page. Quite poignant I feel.

“On my various travels across this merry little globe of ours I have always gravitated towards the Scots.

Unquestionably there is a similar cultural and political outlook, sense of humour and general way of life. There have been few political events that have made me feel more sad, anxious and fearful than the prospect of the Scots going their own way. Billy Connolly once said that he had far more in common with a welder in Liverpool or Portsmouth than any Highland landowner. Billy was right. Very few people could speak as much common sense and make you guffaw at the same time as he has over the years.

All flights of fancy aside, the leagues of both Scotland and England should stay as they are, and the unique union that binds us should stay as it is. For the people of Worcester and Hove etc it probably doesn’t matter one iota.

They possibly view the Scots like you would an infrequently seen neighbour who has a habit of lighting a bonfire when you’ve just put the washing on the line. That’s a poor analogy as it must be several decades since damp washing saw pegs and a line in Hove, but you get my drift, I’m sure.

For northerners, it’s very different of course. Their way of life is so much like ours that it’s virtually inseparable. I’ve always considered myself pro-Scottish until they start having a real go at the English, and then my hackles rise in what is usually a temporary indignation, as I remind myself that the things they dislike in the English are the same things that I also dislike in the English too. Stay with us, lads and lasses. We’d miss you.”

  23. Re. Sevco shares

It is interesting to see that in the final moments of last week’s share issue two lots of 500,000 shares were sold (within 5 seconds of each other) raising a total of £250k.

This was the difference between success in the share issue (£3.18m) and failure, which would have led to the inevitable first administration of this new company/club.

The mystery £250k share investor was more useful than a potential £250k creditor.

I need a wee lie down as I feel I’m becoming obsessed.

  24. squire Danaher @15.03.

  26. wmd:

I’d like to answer your point but I have not a clue what WH is.

I’ve read for months on here all the claims from both sides, I have read some despicable things smearing the subject and posters alike, but in general, the general tone and rhetoric from the Yes supporters has been leaning towards neo-nationalism as opposed socialism, it seems to strip their purported cherished ideals naked of grace, tolerance, empathy and charity and at time it has been shameful and yet racism has become accepted on CQN as long as it is a racism you agree with.

    Disgusting.

You are willing to build a nation on the preaching of a leader who has already stated that he will default on his national debt under certain conditions, and the damning, shameful words of one of his leaders,” there will be a day of reckoning”, and with the warnings of the Deutsche Bank that Scotland could be a basket case being rebutted at scaremongering. You’d build a nation from that foundation and be confident of socialist success?

If it is a Yes vote Scotland is going to need all the lines of credit she can get, the Deutsche Bank might just be one of those doors she’ll be knocking on and there’ll be dragons and high interest rates and massive default penalty clauses. To my mind, the SNP’s campaign to free Scotland pales in professionalism as that we witnessed by the huns to save Rangers. And that analogy is considered.

Got to go, work to do. I love working. What is the hardest work of all…No work at all.
