Defending in Europe

660

As news of the goal deluge from the Bernabeu arrived last night it must have caused some reflection at Celtic. Real Madrid thumped Malmo, our eliminators, 8-0. Malmo are not, after all, this season’s surprise packages.

European football is an unforgiving environment, not just for the minnows. Roma, who are currently second in their Champions League group, lost 6-1 in Barcelona two weeks ago. That result came on the back of Bayern Munich taking a 0-5 lead inside 36 minutes in front of 70,000 fans in Rome in last season’s tournament. Bayern went on to win 1-7 in what was supposed to be a game which changed Roma’s ways.

Roma are a good team, currently fourth in Serie A, but their expansive tendencies have earned them humiliating results against teams capable of exploiting them.

Rule No. 1 in Europe is to be defensively disciplined. If you don’t have that aspect of the game figures out, you are as well not competing.

While John Collins was no doubt sincere in saying he could see tonight’s game far enough, he should be relishing the opportunity to test his defence against a European team. This is our last chance before next season’s qualifiers. It is a precious occasion to test tactics.

Thanks to everyone who has bought Winds of Change, and for the fantastic feedback on what was an incredible era to be a Celtic supporter.

  1. EL cannot help but agree with you, there are indeed other issues besides the quality of some of the posts/posters. IMHO H H Hebcelt

  2. Timbhoy,

Braw min. I hope you enjoy.

Where I live, watching BT through sky is the best option by some distance. I’d say they’ve covered about 90 % of our televised games this season.

    Covering the next two too.

  3. My friends in Celtic,

Can’t believe we would consider signing another player with a proven track record of Injury.

I would like to think that having had our whole hand burned ( never mind fingers ) with Derk Boerrigter we would never be so stupid again.

A wee update on the progress re getting the left back who made the pass to Willie Wallace in that Dukla match to get full access to Celtic matches when he gets home from hospital.

Celtic today gave me full access to Celtic TV for Tommy.

We raised around £650 on the blog over the weekend. We will pick up a laptop for Celtic TV viewing and have sorted out the Sky installation for 8th January. We will sort BT when that’s done so he’ll not miss a match.

I went to see the warden to make sure we could get Sky in without any problems. Apparently all the other residents have it already.

  5. I guess it’s all about where you are, and how good your equipment is, I have no problems with speed on logging in here.

Posts/posters are what make a a blog, all different opinions, some would like a site with all there pals on it, and no one to disagree with them on any subject, that wouldent be much of a blog, …..for that kind of social media I would suggest Facebook, just saying.

  8. I think it may have been me who started all this data usage carry on.

I use a S5 phone and browse with Chrome..

Data usage was going through the roof and the site was loading slower than a wet weekend.

Tried Adblocker but that would only work on wifi.

Disabled images and that helped but site was still slow and data usage had dropped a bit but not enough.

So following advice I got here tried a different approach.

Downloaded Firefox at first but was advised that it also was data hungry so scrapped that.

    Finally settled on Opera Mini.

This has 2 data usage options so is a one click operation.

Ads are gone. Images are gone. Site loads reasonably fast and the data usage has dropped massively.

Hope this is of some use to somebody.

Downside is that you dont get to see what BSR is linking to

TEAM NEWS: CELTIC VS. FENERBAHCE (A)

By Ruairi Daly 13 mins ago 2 min read time 159 reads No comments yet

Celtic will play their final game of the Europa League this season and will hope to end on a high note after a disappointing campaign.

Ronny Deila’s men have only registered two points from five games and haven’t registered a single win at home for the first time ever in European competition.

It could have been a very different story in Group A, had Celtic held on to an early two goal lead they opened up at Paradise in the reverse fixture back in October.

Instead, fans will have to endure a year without European football after Christmas with qualification for next year’s Champions League being the main target.

Fenerbahce will be looking to close out the group with a win and possibly clinch top spot, if Ajax can beat group leaders Molde.

    Celtic

Kris Commons and James Forrest have travelled to Istanbul after recovering from a hamstring problem and a knock. Commons isn’t expected to feature for the full 90 minutes and it’s likely Forrest won’t feature for the entirety of the game either.

Aidan Nesbitt has made the trip to Istanbul with the senior squad after Friday’s 5-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Under-21 Premier League International Cup.

Deila has no fresh injury concerns to worry about, but will have to find a replacement for Scott Brown in midfield, as the skipper recovers from a knee injury. Saidy Janko and Charlie Mulgrew are long-term absentees.

    Fenerbahce

Robin van Persie was ruled out of the game on Monday with a thigh injury.

  12. Clink,

    Good stuff.

I find the site a wee touch slow on opera but unfortunately the links are fine :)

Mindya, I think I went to the less severe data saving option a few weeks ago when I realised the data munching problem was easing

WE are delighted to announce New Zealand-based All Stars Football Academy as the latest club to join our International Club Partnership Programme.

Like Celtic, All Stars Football Academy is committed to developing young elite footballers and was launched in Mount Maunganui in 2012. It has since built a base of 130 players between the ages of five and 12 years old.

As with all academy partners, the relationship will involve the two clubs sharing coaching methodologies, coach education and hosting coaching camps.

The All Stars Football Academy will have the opportunity to come to Glasgow and experience life as an academy player here at Celtic.

They can also attend our renowned International Coaches Convention in Glasgow and receive a behind-the-scenes look at how we develop young players to achieve their full potential.

Martin Collins, Director at All Stars Football Academy said: “Building a partnership with Celtic will help support our player development.

“The partnership will expose our players to European-style football through Celtic’s coaching camps and this will also be extended through players eventually heading to Glasgow to experience the Celtic Academy first-hand.”

Celtic Soccer Academy manager, Tony Massie added: “We’re delighted to add All Stars Football Academy to our International Club Partnership Programme and excited to have the opportunity to work with our second group in New Zealand.

“They join us at an exciting time with a number of new opportunities being introduced which are exclusive to Club Partners.

“We look forward to our first piece of activity with them in January and seeing the partnership develop year on year.”

If you are interested in our International Partnership programme, would like to host a Celtic FC overseas camp or take part in a team tour to Celtic then click HERE or contact Tony Massie directly on tmassie@celticfc.co.uk

Checked their website this afternoon, tickets not on sale yet. I’m off over Christmas period so should be able to go down when they do go on sale. Might need a co pilot if amount of tickets are restricted.

Anyway I’ll grab as many as I can, yourself and Almore will have first shout on any I get mate.

  19. Ronny gets it.

Celtic’s Champions League and Europe League voyage has been terrible this season as they failed to qualify from Playoff of UCL and had a lack of success in UEL as they were unable to register a single win.

Ronny Deila’s team will travel to Istanbul on Thursday night and try to make his first win at European competitions this season despite having no chance to qualify for the group stage.

The transfer window opens in one month, and Hoops boss is planning to sign quality players to make his team stronger for next season and get into the Champions League competition.

“It’s clear to me what I need to improve next season,” Deila said. “People talk about only defending, but we have to make the whole squad stronger.

“It’s about developing the players who are here and adding some who can make us even more active. This transfer window in January could be very important, but it’s not just about getting new players in – it’s about getting the right ones too.”
