Defending in Europe

660

As news of the goal deluge from the Bernabeu arrived last night it must have caused some reflection at Celtic. Real Madrid thumped Malmo, our eliminators, 8-0. Malmo are not, after all, this season’s surprise packages.

European football is an unforgiving environment, not just for the minnows. Roma, who are currently second in their Champions League group, lost 6-1 in Barcelona two weeks ago. That result came on the back of Bayern Munich taking a 0-5 lead inside 36 minutes in front of 70,000 fans in Rome in last season’s tournament. Bayern went on to win 1-7 in what was supposed to be a game which changed Roma’s ways.

Roma are a good team, currently fourth in Serie A, but their expansive tendencies have earned them humiliating results against teams capable of exploiting them.

Rule No. 1 in Europe is to be defensively disciplined. If you don’t have that aspect of the game figures out, you are as well not competing.

While John Collins was no doubt sincere in saying he could see tonight’s game far enough, he should be relishing the opportunity to test his defence against a European team. This is our last chance before next season’s qualifiers. It is a precious occasion to test tactics.

Thanks to everyone who has bought Winds of Change, and for the fantastic feedback on what was an incredible era to be a Celtic supporter.

  1. “but our tactics gave away any advantage we had.”

    HT,

I’m a big Ronny fan. That might be a surprise to some :)

But if told Broony to make a howling heider to izzy, vvd and Nir to jump into each other and Boyata to score an own goal I’ll drive him from ‘park heid’ myself.

  2. No Geordie it is pedantary – and you know it. I am making nothing up. Collins said we are looking to strengthen in every level. So he must mean it? No?

Or are you just making something up to suit your agenda?

I thought that Malmo were a very poor team on the night at Celtic Park. They were all at sea in the first 25 minutes of the first leg, look at the time griffiths had to tuck away the first goal. You just don’t see that normally at any decent level of football.

I’m even more convinced that they were/are a poor team when I see how they’ve done since they knocked us out.

But I think that over 180 minutes of football the better team generally goes through. Small margins sometimes and maybe they were helped by being well into their season, the disallowed Bitton goal etc but we were so terribly poor in Sweden, the way we played that night made it hard to make a case for us being a better team than them.

    In my opinion of course.

Quonno and all his fellow Bonnos – lies? Had the majority not ‘gubbed’ the separatists in the Neverendum – we would be heading towards bankrupcy in March 2016 based on the pack of lies in the SNP ‘thick’ White Paper.

Lies about the NHS, Police, Further Education, GM Crops, Fracking and now the Forth Bridge.

How do you know the SNP people are lying? – their lips move.

Just what in the name of God was all that about?

  5. Neg,

To me it says they are looking at players for various positions throughout the team. But only if they will improve the team.

I see that as being a maximum of 3 changes whether that be buys, promotions within or the loanees we have out returning

You I think see that as a opportunity to rip the piss if we don’t buy a new 1 to 11.

A big factor in the Maribor and Malmo home games was Lustig going off injured too in my view

As soon as he went off v Maribor the Slovenians went to town on Adam Matthews and the goal came from Matthews failing to stop a cross

Same thing happened a year later with Malmo, Lustig gets injured, Efe is on, rightly or wrongly it’s panic stations down that side, Efe dives into a tackle and fails to make it, van dijk loses the plot and smashes the ball out from a corner from which they score and change the complexion of the tie

But Malmo had to cope with adversity in the tie too. Being without Rosenberg for the first leg for example. They dealt with it better than we did.

I hear what you’re saying about the tactics and can’t disagree with that. Far too open when we don’t need to be.

A team that’s lack the organisation or the discipline or the tactics or the motivation of their opponents.

A good point often overlooked on our entire qualifying campaign last season.

    Afternoon needs :-)

Individual mistakes are always going to play a part in any sport. Sure Ronny didn’t instruct Broony or Boyata to go out and make those errors but in my opinion focusing just on those individual mistakes ignores a more obvious failing.

  10. No Geordie – I contend that the whole statement by collins is nonsense and an insult to our intelligence – just like the old “we will strengthen in every window”. Its patently bollocks.

You on the other hand are desparate to find a wordy loophole to suit you agenda – which is to find an out for the board at every turn.

  11. TGBS

I think we’re singing from the same sheet. I just think that our expansive game means that we’re more likely to be punished when individual errors happen.

TGBS … as you suggest, it is not as clear cut as some (including me) might make it seem ….. as TET said, had we made it 3-0, it would likely have ended very differently …. but, our efforts in Europe have been poor, and too often, see the same problems repeated ….. too often, we start well, but then something happens and we run out of gas, or fall apart ……. mentally, the team seems fragile, and lacking in belief …. in themselves (we rarely seem to have the confidence to take players on), and in each other (they dont move and pass as a unit) …

We might not have the best players, but the coach should have them believing in their skills, and getting them to buy into a system which gets the most out of their individual and collective talents …. unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be happening

So Ermine is struggling to login quickly –

The guy who has given Scots a non- stop hiding since I joined the blog!?

What is that guy for anyway?

    It’s clear what he’s against…

Fitba is seldom mentioned unless there is a political angle…

The Herbo guy has a few swearies and a bit heavy on the posting but I’m sure he’s a fitba fan, chef and good guy..doubt there is a racist bone in his body.

Ermine has been trolling this site forever and a day … Selecting his targets.

It would not surprise me in the least if Celtic got some kind of result tomorrow night. Now the pressure is off and we must win is off there backs they should be able to play with freedom. I am looking forward to the game and like others on CQN I hope Ronny experiments at least a bit. H.H.

Show me in plain language, an example of a deliberate lie that I haver posted here.

Indeed I have been known to hold up my hand when guilty of being wrong.

As for political lies, today’s court ruling means that they are perfectly acceptable.

  16. MiT

Problem I see is more mentality than anything else, when the team click, they are very good, but as you say, it’s normally an individual mistake that happens and the whole team confidence evaporates.

This is where Jim McGuinness comes in, but it will take time to breed the kids with this confidence, the senior players, it’s too late imo.

  17. HT,

I get your point though. I wasn’t trying to shift away from it with a gag.

Only natural that Celtic fans will be circumspect about our tie with Malmo, given the Swede bashing in the Bernabeu.

Celtic virtually man for man including VVD are better, and a combination of luck, controversy, and tactical failure ensured Celtic’s downfall.

The ‘high pressing’ game with a sieve, ensures nothing but the likelihood of Thursday night football, for more fun and fandango.

    TET

Agreed the senior players are a lost cause. Too many victories in the back of being able to step it up against SPL fodder when required.

Overall the inability to take a pass, see a pass, complete a pass puts the entire team under pressure in Europe.

The attitude is shocking and contempt for new ideas is there for all to see.

I’m going to resist getting into the lack of proper investment in the squad or more importantly, the poor judgement of the guys who choose our strikers,

    For now

However the inability of our seniors to pass and move is killing us

  20. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Am I correct Malmo beat us home and away? but we are better than them now how does that work ? H.H.

  21. From the Board’s perspective,it would be easier to sack Ronny (‘judge me in Europe’),on Friday morning, rather than on the back of a Treble.

  22. Joe Filippis Haircut on

HAMILTONTIM. Not home and away we didnt.I think we need to accept over two ties Malmo were the better side that is what the history books will show.H.H.

    No Joe,

    Just away.
