Defensive experiments will pay dividends

822

Playing Adam Matthews and Emilio Izaguirre as wing-backs with Kelvin Wilson, Charlie Mulgrew and Mikael Lustig as a back three looked a bit clumsy and didn’t last the 90 minutes but that was to be expected.  New defensive formations are not supposed to operate as smoothly as familiar systems.

I’m far from certain three at the back is a good idea, or if we have the correct personnel for this formation, but Neil Lennon should persist with the experiment.  We will not learn and grow if we don’t take chances, which was one of our abiding frustrations under both Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan.

No experiments on Tuesday, of course!

I think that we’ve seen enough of 3-5-2 from last season and yesterday to recognise that it won’t work with the current players.

  3. As long as mistakes are not repeated

One would have thought after the hoofing we got in Amsterdam that this three at back nonsense would have been binned

against a team playing one up front it left too many in defence and us short in midfield

  4. Tuesday is not the time to go experimenting with unfamiliar formations. Get Hooper, Brown and hopefully Forrest back and go from there. Think it would be harsh if we dropped Commons, he’s been fairly lively in the opening games, so I can see Forrest starting on the bench if he’s fit

See my comment at 22.14 about the problems in IE8 with the match report post – might help get a fix for the problem.

Are they changing the Vienna accords based on what happened to wpc Fletcher? I heard about the Nigerian crate escapade but again I did not know they were looking to change International law because of it.

  7. Below is a post taken from TSFM.

The writer sums up my feelings exactly and is why I get frustrated at the squabbling that takes place on here at times, often on matters completely unrelated on Celtic.

It would be more in our interest to try and focus ourselves and our club on the main issue.

    Please read the excellent post::-

I have spent more years watching football than I care to remember. I can remember standing with my father in the jungle watching the Celtic greats. I went to matches home and away with my son, throughout the good and the bad times.

I have enjoyed watching football. I enjoyed feeling part of something that was enjoyed by many. I enjoyed watching and going to matches all during the EBT period. Even now that I have been informed of the levels of cheating and deceit by RFC(IA) during this period, it has not diminished that enjoyment I felt.

Now however, things have changed for me and I am no longer able to look at football in this country in the same way.

I have watched and listened to blatant lies, blatant cheating and blatant corruption by the people who are supposed to run this wonderful game on OUR behalf, not behind closed doors but in full front of us all.

The SFA and the SPL have corrupted our game to a staggering level. The SFA have been aware of the dual contracts issue well before the season ended. Their goal was to take no action against RFC(IA) in this matter until the season ended. They did not want to deal with it because it would have resulted in RFC(IA), losing its SFA membership and licence. Neither of these two organisations had the bottle to do that. So instead, they ripped up the rule book, they worked tirelessly with Green to ensure that this could never happen.

Delays after delays ensured that a new company would be formed before they would take any action. The administrators played their part in this as well. The first clear indication of what was to come, was the incredible statement from Doncaster that D&P had delayed handing over documentation relating to the dual contract investigation, despite numerous requests. What action was taken in regard to the deliberate delay, none.

Even before the CVA, the SFA, the SPL was having meetings with Charles Green in making arrangements for the transition of his new company into the SPL. Indeed they appeared to have an open door policy for Green.

When RFC becomes RFC(IA), the second stage of the plan kicks in. This plan however was thwarted by a campaign lead oly by fans. Let there be no mistake, Sevco would be in the SPL today, if it was left up to the SPL clubs. The next plan was to bribe the SFL into accepting Sevco in SFL div1. Again supporter power and chairmen with integrity, put a stop to that. However their integrity only went so far. Did they even consider giving an opportunity to any of the other long established non-league teams, it would appear not.

Part of the plan was was now complete. Now however Green had smelt their fear and sensed their desperation. For two weeks he held discussions with the football authorities and in the end he got SFA membership. Not only that but he got a newly made up form of membership, a conditional one. Why were they given that, it was simply that they could not fulfil the requirements for full membership. Again the SFA panicked as the Ramsdens cup was about to commence, so they create this anomaly.

In all of this it was lost that RFC(IA), should not have had a membership to transfer over. Their membership should have lapsed as they never produced audited accounts.

Stipulations were said to be placed upon the granting of the SFA membership, I say said because membership was granted before they need to be carried out. Indeed given Green’s statements of late, he has no intention of carrying the mains ones out.

As for the pretend transfer embargo, what kind of sanction was that which does not take place until after the transfer window closes,

So in order for Regan and Doncaster to Sevco SFA membership, SFA, SPL, UEFA and FIFA rules have been broken, altered or interpreted to suit and all in plain view of us all. I feel that whatever the outcome of the FTT, the dual contracts investigation, nothing will be done to Sevco, it is far too late for that now. The deeds have been done and will not be undone.

Reconstruction will be brought in next year IMO. Sevco will be back in top football next year. Regan and Doncaster have told us that they will go ahead with their plans, however this will be for all clubs to benefit from, won’t it?

I hope that Regan and Doncaster feel proud of what they have done in our names as fans. They have corrupted our once beautiful game, lied and cheated for only club only, to the detrement of the rest of us. They can never be trusted again by the majority of football fans and they have ensured OUR game, OUR football will never be that same again.

Apologies for the length of this and the fact that there is nothing that I’d not already known. It is something that I needed to get of my chest, so to speak.

  8. Doh, post from end of last article…

    Bonjour la classe !!

    First things first.

Mr R Tressell, take a cyber bow. Your post at 10.07 was splendiferous and has had me engaged in political discussion with some hitherto non persuadables this morning.

I really enjoyed reading what you had to say and from travelling extensively in Latin America, your penultimate paragraph certainly rings true. Thanks for posting that.

    On to matters football……

Could we sign Jamie Carragher? Seriously.

I notice he is now 3rd or perhaps 4th choice CB at Liverpool. He does not suit the Brendan Rogers philosophy, which is ball playing defenders who can start moves and lay angled creative passes into midfield.

JC is a football anorak, future Liverpool manager and a well known Celtic admirer. Would he fancy a season in the CL should we get though Helsinborgs? I think he would and I think we should ask. Just ask.

He may be on a bijillion bucks a week and then its a non starter. Brendan Rogers, another Celtic fan, might need him around, especially after Aggers red card yesterday and so fair enough, it’s a no go.

    But it’s worth asking, surely?

Imagine six games in the CL with Charlie and Carragher at the back. Yes, Jamie is only just 6ft and not exactly Bobo but he is more than competent in the air. He is an experienced winner, tough tackler, great positional sense but more than anything else, and crucially to Celtic, he is an organiser and a leader. He has won the European Cup and played in another final, I think he is 33/34.

I don’t know the guy, having read his book he is red through and through despite growing up an Evertonian. I think Neil should at least ask Brendan Rogers, even for a one year loan. JC aint in the CL this year and we could be.

He has played at CP before and like Gerrard, Owen and everyone else, was bowled over. I hope we ask.

If not, I’ll be more than happy to go with Charlie and Rogne.

I don’t think any of the systems we play are that well implemented.

Think our inexperienced coaching staff are the issue more than having the right players for system.

We seem to have a lot of gaps no matter what system suggesting we are not a cohesive unit.

Our forwards are often isolated and our midfield are to often in no mans land neither deep enough to protect the defense or far enough forward to support attack.

Hopefully the coaches are still on a learning curb and we will continue to improve.

  10. Would we be confident our board would do enough to sign Russell should Lenny decide he wants him ?

After all fletcher,McCarthy and McFadden were all spl players and Celtic fans that we went for but seemed to offer very low amounts hoping the players themselves would force the move.

  11. We offered 750k for Russell in January i’m sure, would take double that to shift him now.

  12. Hamiltontim, perhaps but I think the player need more time to settle into it.

proudbhoy, I don’t believe Celtic ever bid for McCarthy. They knew the asking price when he went to Wigan but Tony Mowbray didn’t rate him.

Many contemporary comments on here were equally unconvinced by the player.

kevinjohn, many thanks for your on-going help.

I think you’re being harsh on our management team.

However, not being at Lennoxtown on a daily basis, neither of are going to know for sure. My concern is more to do with the need to learn from mistakes, I don’t think that’s always evident.

Let’s not get carried away, I thought we were poor yesterday but we did more than enough to earn a point at the very least, we were denied a blatant penalty, we were without 10 players through injury and we have a massively important game in Europe this week which may well have been a distraction for some of the starting 11.

  14. Ulysess, see my post at 15.09.

JC as a short term investment would help our club immeasurably.

Santa Cruz and their loyal support return to the heights of Serie C next campaign

Last night in the Estádio do Arruda in Recife, an attendance of 59,966 was recorded as home-side Santa Cruz booked a return to Série C with a 0-0 with Treze

Having come from 3-1 down away from home to pull level at 3-3, the result was enough for the Pernambuco side, long regarded as one of the best supported in Brazil.

Despite their lowely status, Santa Cruz have regularly attracted massive crowd figures and bost a massively loyal support, a feature of North-Eastern sides in Brazil.

Other teams promoted to Série C include Oeste and Mirassol.

  18. I thought we did make bid for McCarthy , seems not then. Anyone know how much Wigan got him for ?

Just watched Wigan game there and McCarthy is nice neat footballer with good passing ability. Never gonna score many goals but suits the 5 man midfield Wigan play.

If Caldwell could defend he would be excellent player.. Comfortable on the ball and always looking for the pass before the hoff.

  19. Ha, you know how we refer to Newco being in the fourth tier, rather than ‘Division 3’? Well there’s another one – in work, if the opportunity arises, describe something poor as ‘fourth tier’ or ‘fourth division’. Of course, anything positive is ‘champion’. They love all that kind of banter.

  20. Russell may well be talented and a Celtic fan but does he have the mindset to deal with the kind of kicking handed out to Celtic players as a matter of course? Can he deal with 10 men defences he will probably have to face week in week out?

I may be wrong but yesterday sickened me. I expected better of Ross County. All we got was another ICT.

I have a mate who’s a Dundee fan and he claimed Ross County last season was the dirtiest team he’s ever seen – no attempt to play football, just very good at the ‘dark arts’. Yesterday proved him right.

  23. Hamiltontim

The performance in games is what i based on.

We have some very good moments in games but also seem disjointed at times.

This was more than apparent against Helsinki at Celtic park.

Still think that our movement off the ball is poor and perhaps this is to do with a relatively young coaching staff sticking rigidly to system rather than allowing a little more creative expression.

We are obsessed with possession and our stats are impressive but our chances created and goals ratio are poor.

Coaches are still learning so think above will improve.

  24. There was a recent article on the Bleecher Report, an excellent US sports site. They rated the most passionate fans of clubs and national teams. Celtic came in second to Barcelona. Somehow they failed to mention the mighty Sevco in their top 25.
