Defensive experiments will pay dividends

822

Playing Adam Matthews and Emilio Izaguirre as wing-backs with Kelvin Wilson, Charlie Mulgrew and Mikael Lustig as a back three looked a bit clumsy and didn’t last the 90 minutes but that was to be expected.  New defensive formations are not supposed to operate as smoothly as familiar systems.

I’m far from certain three at the back is a good idea, or if we have the correct personnel for this formation, but Neil Lennon should persist with the experiment.  We will not learn and grow if we don’t take chances, which was one of our abiding frustrations under both Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan.

No experiments on Tuesday, of course!

  1. For me, the only two members of the team who deserve to get criticised from yesterday are Wanyama and Ledley. The fault lay with our formation.

We played a 3-1-4-1-1, with Wanyama supposed to play deep to cover the back 3 and start up moves from midfield. However, his positional indiscipline meant that Kayal and Ledley, instead of playing closer together, were often found on either wing ostensibly supporting the wingbacks, but where play kept getting congested as a result. This in turn left a big gap in the middle, meaning Commons having to come too deep, leaving a lack of threat up front. Sammi didn’t touch the ball until the 15th minute!

Still think Wanyama’s a CB. Can I say that after two gash games at DM?

  2. Kayal

Completely agree ….. You’d think after the above mentioned striking disasters we’d appreciate the need to buy better

  3. £5 million for Ki?!

The Helsingborg game is live on Sky channel 252 in HD, and on channel 272.

They are also showing 4 other CL qualifiers next week including our old foes Udinese.

    HH!!

  7. I don’t think we should talk numbers and amounts for transfers, I think it should be by comparison with other players. Example – Ki is worth loads of Dobbies.

Ki wouldn’t always be a first-team player and Dobbie brings attacking flair, plus it’s money in the bank. I like it.

I had money on myself to put a positive spin on this :-)

I don’t know what you are all concerned about.

The deal values Dobbie at £5,000,000.

    What’s not to like.

I just hope he’s as magic as the we elf from Harry Potter.

  13. Dobbie scored half of his 85 goals while he was on loan to Q.O.S from Hibs.

The Hibs manager at the time was Mogga – even he thought Dobbie was c**p!

    HH!!

  14. Green & Whyte’s Rangers : now THAT’s a name for the sevcovians I could live with.
