Defensive experiments will pay dividends

822

Playing Adam Matthews and Emilio Izaguirre as wing-backs with Kelvin Wilson, Charlie Mulgrew and Mikael Lustig as a back three looked a bit clumsy and didn’t last the 90 minutes but that was to be expected.  New defensive formations are not supposed to operate as smoothly as familiar systems.

I’m far from certain three at the back is a good idea, or if we have the correct personnel for this formation, but Neil Lennon should persist with the experiment.  We will not learn and grow if we don’t take chances, which was one of our abiding frustrations under both Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan.

No experiments on Tuesday, of course!

Unfortunately I don’t have an image to go with this one …

Good article Gordon, I personally think that the SNP will try another little move to save defeat at the referendum.

The SNP know they cant win the debate and vote to separate Scotland from the UK, I think the tactic will be to provoke a massive bust up with the UK Government over the issue of the second question (I dont think Westminster will agree to the second question on the ballot paper) this will allow the SNP to storm off in a huff and crucially not have the referendum, as losing the vote would kill the chance of independence for a generation.

It will suit them to say they are not playing because of the second question, the SNP know they are beat, better to retreat while blaming big bad Westminster. This I suspect is where they are now.

    ******

I read your reply to oldand… and I genuinely admire your tenacity and judgement throughout this mess.

I posted, next door in TSFM recently, that the only chance the game has is for the force that thwarted the Shoehorn to redouble their efforts with their own clubs, informing them that the same sanctions will be taken against them, re STs, if they don’t ensure fair play and integrity throughout the power bases of Scottish football.

I reckon that we have one season to save the game.

If not, then there will be many divorces involving fans from their respective clubs.

Celtic will have to publicly stand up for integrity and let the underfunded forces of law ans order deal with the threatened “social unrest”.

If not, then Scotland will become a very nasty and dangerous place to live.

A united front of supporters groups is obviously the way to go for a coordinated approach.

    Good luck with your efforts.

  3. shimmies,

Just about everything you say is true, BUT……If as apparently trailed in one of Paul’s leaders is true….i.e. we are going to have very poor financials, there will be tremendous pressure to focus on that again. In these days of PLCs as the custodian’ sof the club’s leverage and attraction, suitors may find Celtic very willing to do business.

That is where Peter Lawwell will demonstrate his skills, in getting the most from the buyers recognising that they know our financial position and the forecasts for the future….they also understand the pressure that comes from us, the fans, for success, developement, new faces and more success.

Peter Lawwell doesn’t have a great hand to play.

The amount we receive (if he goes) will be a real measure of his abilities. (and no I don’t know what his price will be but it should also be balanced at least by the value that the manager feels he delivers to the team.)

My fear is it will be a piece of flesh trading that removes a known burden from out variable expenses.

If the latter is judged to have occurred (we’ll all judge it independently), then what will the voice of the fan say….and will be acknowledged never mind heard?

If he tries for the first option, it will all depend on the importance that Lenny puts on his presence. If he wants him I think he’ll win and the price will be high or we might even keep him.

If he doesn’t want him, he’ll go cheap(ish) because Lenny won’t care, he’s not the money man. He’s probably already identified his main targets over the next 6 months. Whoever is on it, well nobody knows. But I would bet that major feelers are out already to oil the relationships that keep a potential deal, a secret.

Is that going to be Peter Lawwell’s priority. Ki’s place in that priority will also be decided.

The price that we get will be a combination of Lenny wanting Ki seeing him as expendable and how silent the grapevine is, and Peter’s success criteria that he will have signed for the board.

5 and 7million are my guesses.

  7. A quick question on the new club which i thought i would never ask … If they had the world no euroean no uk no record yesterday…. was the club deck open? I thought that was owned by the creditors or did they include that in the figures?

  8. Opening week-end of the EPL season and Sky Italia are showing 6 of the 10 matches live.

3 yesterday, 2 today and the game tomorrow.

It will be the same every week-end and mid-week when games are on until May.

    SPL? Aye right!

    HH!!

  9. We’ll win on Tuesday not by choking up central defence but by dominating midfield in the same way as the Helsinki ties, particularly the 2nd leg wher ewe bossed around 70% of the game.

Helsingborgs, like Helsinki and many Scandinavian sides ( are instinctively efficient and conservative. They’ll work harder to close us down and deny space than they will pushing on and pressurising our defence.

If we take the midfield high ground it’ll give players like Commons time to pick his pass.

Big Vic’s absence in the first leg Tuesday will be telling. If we can come away with a result his return at Parkhead will be a major plus.

  10. think 5 million for ki with dobbie thrown in is/ or would be poor business from celtic, but then i dont think there is any truth in it, i dont think celtic would even come to the table for anything less than 6 million tbh.

lots being said about the teams preformance and the need to signed players. i agree that we need a centreback of good quality, but i dont think we would be signing another centre forward, unless he’s better than what we have, lets get watt and keatings in the team when needed, yesterday is not the first time watt has come on and done a good job, i am sure with more time on the park our younger players would progress well.

another thing, everyone suspected that celtic would walk the league this season and that would be that, i dont think that will be the case and tbh seeing a consistant challenge from dundee united, hearts, hibs and/ or aberdeen without rangers in the league could trigger better attendances for these clubs and might just make the other teams realise that it would be in their interest to have a larger league with fewer games (2 x per season) against each team, thus avoiding the 8 games involving us and thems (sevco) which simply kills competition

    what you ghuys think?

  11. Don’t really get it with the “we need central defender” line and especially those who say we need a defensive coach.

As I remember, we had the best defensive record in SPL history last year; or was it the most clean sheets; or both? Anyway it was a pretty good record.

And despite those who moan about the zonal marking at corners – I don’t think we lose too many goals at corners. In fact, I’d say it is well below the average.

I think our real problem jointly lies in lack of creativity in midfield couple with forwards who are too static – and hence our lack of goals so far this season.

Sammy has to play wide left or not at all. Izzy has to have his left foot re-set to point in the right direction. And until injuries to Forrest and McGeoch are healed we need to play Broony wide right.

  12. Noticed the calls from all and sundry in the world of media and music asking for the release of the Pussy Rioters yet they have all remained silent regarding their views on what probably is a bigger event about freedom of speech happening right on their very doorstep

Step forward Julian Assange he now asks the free democratic world the question are you pussys or cats

Will the UK storm the embassy and capture the man the US wants to put on trial more than any Al Qaeda suspect

When I was watching the BBC News item on his speech, I could see that it was a hologram AND in the bottom right corner, there was a bloke with dyed hair, false moustache, glasses and nose on, a tee shirt that said ‘I love Quito – free the Ecuador 1’, sneaking out behind the back of the polis.

I’ve heard he’s made it as far as Airdrie where he has to stay for two days…..he now wants to go back to Sweden!

Stats are a horrible thing, I cannot argue with the amount of goals we lost last season but there for the grace of God we could have lost more. However, we do need a dominant experienced CH, a no nonsense player. In the ilk of Johann Mjalby, indeed he should be well aware of the type of CH we need, after all he is our defensive Coach.

Everything else in your post I agree with.
