Defensive shape not right

482

Penny for the thoughts of Erik Sviatchenko on Saturday as he watched the defence he’ll soon become part of. Players were skipping past Jozo Simunovic while we had Keystone Cops defending from Efe at a corner kick (our problems here are clearly not resolved).

St Johnstone failed to score during their previous five games but would have scored more against a generous Celtic were it not for some fine work by Craig Gordon.

Individual errors aside, there are aspects of our shape I’m not happy with. In previous times you wouldn’t know if the Celtic defence and keeper were having a good game, they were so well protected. In the Premiership, this makes for entertaining football as we march to the title, but at a higher level we’ll be ripped open.

There’s not a proper defensive midfielder at the club. If we’re going to keep to this shape, we’ll need one before August.

The st Johnstone boy has agreed terms with Sevco it’s the fact that StJohnstone have never accepted a bid for his services that’s an issue.

  2. G67- correct, absolutely pointless taking a guy on loan, which we have no intention of signing,a waste of time and money,I thought PL’a son worked at CP?

  3. Why sign a loan player who will never sign long term. Why Have a youth set-up? Why have scouts? Just wait till Man city want to get one of their players fit/in shop window

    Chortle – very good.

Album covers good – Who’s Next, AWB, Rod the Mod, Atlantic Crossing (did a pencil drawing of this during Higher Art, took about a month. I still have it and it still looks good.

album covers bad – Who, live at Leeds and Sgt Peppers (seem to be in a minority of one these days, but I hate the spouse gits, and grew titled of the ad nausea my comments about how good it was)

Seems bizarre that they took so long to make this announcement. Maybe they were giving the SFA time to call them to let them know their venue had been selected? Dunno…

  7. Another loanee from Man City what’s the point if we have no chance of a permanent move for a so-called up and coming star. Celtic do not need this lad we have no shortage of good young players at the club.

  8. NatKnow-I spoke to the EK chairman on Thursday, they have been treated very shabbily, the owners have fired a letter to the SFA ,complaining about the situation. TBB is close to the EK guys and might know more. HH

Sadly I’m not in the least surprised to hear that. I’ve said before – the SFA are accountable to no-one except themselves. Scottish Football needs to dismantle this association and start from scratch. Not sure how that could be done but as far as I’m concerned it’s the only way.

  11. Strange story in the Irish indo today

Dermot Keely of Dundalk turned down Celtic in 79 because we asked him to give up his passport, sell his house in Dublin and shave his beard as it would attract the attention of referees!

    He stayed where he was….

  14. The question of defensive shape, doesn’t lie so much with the 4-2-3-1 formation, it’s more to do with personnel.

Celtic would need to recruit very carefully.

If the young lad on his way back to Croatia has failed to show himself to be any better than what we currently have, then ultimately we have conducted ourselves in the correct manner.

At 23 Bitton is still a young player. He still has areas for development. Good proper coaching would allow him to make the position his own.

Against Molde in Norway, he displayed naivety at their first goal. Boyata played a poor pass wide, conceding possession, however it was Bitton as a supposed defensive midfielder that failed to show the Molde player down the line. Instead he committed himself, offered a weak tackle and allowed their player to advance infield.

He needs to, and has the ability to improve his defensive work. Read the play. Show opponents down the outside, to areas where they can’t hurt us….. Basic things. Coach him well, and he will be our answer.

I stayed in Priesthill. No matter which way you went to school you had to go through some other gangs territory. Character building.

I have to say considering how mental our school was, Peter Lawell done brilliant to get out of it and achieve what he did.

P.S. L.D. back playing being selected from development squad and playing well.

You’re on the money. I’d add unaccountable, self-serving, and petty. Celtic’s experience of them over the years demonstrates how unfit they are to govern the game.

There was a BBC feature about EK manager driving his taxi along passed Ibrox.

It seemed a strange route from EK to Hampden.

Perhaps, this will be used by SFA to show that Ibrox is next best venue.

I think Soda was one of the extended McCann family. He was good friends with my sister. The graffiti somes up the school. Thanks for that gave me a good chuckle. Seriously when I was there the pupils went on strike not the teachers. You used to think up mad excuses just to walk out. I remember once we walked out because we didn’t want RE. Teachers just let us go, probably laughing their heads off at us, the thing is there was never any consequences. Except long term of course when you realised you missed half your education. Hail Hail
