Deflected goals and packed defences

202

We arrived at Celtic Park yesterday with an anticipatory bounce in the step.  A full house for flag day with the usual summer noise from elsewhere hushed by the harsh realities of the Scottish Premiership.  St Mirren were not there to make up the numbers, though, and withstood 76% possession and wave after wave of attack without looking overwhelmed.

Genuine chances were few with the visitor’s two banks of players (defenders and auxiliary defenders) parked in front of the box.  Celtic mix it up by playing the long ball to Adam Idah, but he was well marshalled throughout.

Kieran Tierney was back and immediately dispelled any concerns we had about how effective he would be.  His touch, timing in the challenge and industry were first class, but for me, it was his forward passing that was most impressive.  Fortunately his retirement shortly after the hour was a planned change.

You and I have discussed deflected goals often.  When you are up against a packed defence, a deflected shot from the edge of the area should be something you work on.  Against the likes of St Mirren you will seldom get enough space for a free shot, but a shot is still worthwhile.  Fire in enough of them and you will leave the stadium with a smile as wide as Luke McCowan’s yesterday.

Post-match, Brendan Rodgers said, “I’m fed up talking about transfers. We’ve got until the end of the window. We concentrate on what’s here, a lot of work going on behind the scenes to improve the squad.”

I let his comments to Sky Sports on Friday go; we had a game to prepare for, which some of us take seriously, but we will pick them after we discuss the European draw.  Nothing has changed since Friday, though.  “A lot of work going on behind the scenes” is not something which somehow appeared over the weekend.

  1. I asked.No answer,I think.I will ask again.

Do we receive a payout from UEFA for taking part in the play offs?.I am positive they received a big payout last year.

  2. Turkeybhoy

It is in the region of €5m plus gate receipts for reaching play off. That lot did not do this last season. They lost to Kyiv earlier.

  3. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Real shame they missed the play offs last season.

Even if they’d been papped out, that c. €7m clear after costs would have come in very handy.

    Shame.

From memory though they mitigated the impact by selling a couple of players for multimillions each …

    … didn’t they?

And they will do the same this season won’t they?

I mean, now under new, calmer, more strategic, more professional, more prudent leadership … they wouldn’t rush out early in the window buying warm bodies would they?

And, with the new regime establishing a strong culture from the outset …

… they wouldn’t 5h1t their breeks after a dreadful performance at Fir Park, revert to type, and run out and buy a saviour for today in time for 3rd Qualifying round and to win the back pages … would they?

    🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

  4. At the weekend Big Russell told the world, apart from a knocked back Dessers bid, they have not received any other bids for any player.

Cue today, that font of football knowledge,.employer of Keith Hacket,Mc Avennie, and other such in the know pundits, informing us that another team has now joined the bidding war for Igamane.Makes 3 now.Decisions,decicisions.

  5. Turkey bhoy – Yes — all clubs that take part in the UEFA Champions League play‑off round (the final qualifying stage before the group stage) receive a guaranteed participation fee, even if they lose.

For the losers of the Champions League play‑off round:

Clubs eliminated at this stage still get a fixed solidarity payment—reported around €5 million in earlier formats, or €3 million in newer sources. They retain any qualifying‑round payments already earned from earlier rounds

For play‑off winners (who qualify for the group stage):

They do not receive the “play‑off loser” fee. Instead, they gain access to the highly lucrative group stage—where they receive a base participation fee of around €18.62 million, plus further earnings for wins, draws, final league position, and knockout progression
