Deila and Hutter bedding into their new teams

1385

There are parallels between Salzburg and Celtic.  After an outstanding season Salzburg lost their coach, Roger Schmidt, in May to Bayer Leverkusen, appointing Adolf Hutter (commentators beware), who previously managed Austrian Bundesliga club Grodig and is largely unknown outside Austria.

Unlike Ronny Deila, Hutter has not tried to change Salzburg’s system, but the period of transformation has been blamed for Salzburg failing to overcome Malmo in the Champions League play-off round (Malmo taxed Juventus in Turin last night before two second half Tevez goals settled things).  New instructions, new training techniques and, in some cases, new personnel present challenges.

Ronny has had a few false starts but the return of Scott Brown at the weekend, the return to form of Kris Commons, who will surely start, and the addition of Scepovic, Tonev and Wakaso to the squad give reason for confidence.

Thanks to everyone who signed up to participate in the Great Scottish Run to raise funds for the Foundation in their work with poverty, equality, learning and health.  You can sign up here.

We’ve had over 3,000 responses so far to the survey on Celtic fans, who they are, where they came from, and what their views are.  The results will give an excellent insight into this time in our history.  If you’ve not had a chance to leave your mark yet, please do so here (only your first submission counts).

  1. How the media shafted the people of Scotland

“Despite the rise of social media, the established media continues to define the scope of representative politics in Britain, to shape political demands and to punish and erase those who resist. It is one chamber of the corrupt heart of Britain, pumping fear, misinformation and hatred around the body politic.

That so many Scots, lambasted from all quarters as fools, frauds and ingrates, have refused to be bullied is itself a political triumph. If they vote for independence, they will do so in defiance not only of the Westminster consensus but also of its enforcers: the detached, complacent people who claim to speak on their behalf.”

On this blog we rightly criticised the role of the SMSM in relation to Sevco and its sycophantic troop of succulent lamb eaters.

Yet now we see a similar role played out by the scare mongering media during this independence debate.

The solution is simple and we can do it tomorrow

Vote Aye for a fairer Scotland where the people come first

    MEDIA RELEASE

The Scottish Police Federation represents all police officers in the ranks of constable, sergeant, inspector and chief inspector, police cadets and special constables, over 18,500 people, 98% of all police officers in Scotland.

    To: News Editor

    Date: 17 September 2014

    Subject: Independence Referendum

    In response to increased press reports and comment implying increased crime and disorder as a consequence of the Independence Referendum Brian Docherty, Chairman of the Scottish Police Federation said;

“The Police Service of Scotland and the men and women who work in it should not be used as a political football at any time and especially so in these last few hours of the referendum campaign.

As I have previously stated the referendum debate has been robust but overwhelmingly good natured.

It was inevitable that the closer we came to the 18th of September passions would increase but that does not justify the exaggerated rhetoric that is being deployed with increased frequency. Any neutral observer could be led to believe Scotland is on the verge of societal disintegration yet nothing could be further from the truth.

Scotland’s citizens are overwhelmingly law abiding and tolerant and it is preposterous to imply that by placing a cross in a box, our citizens will suddenly abandon the personal virtues and values held dear to them all.

At this time it is more important than ever that individuals be they politicians, journalists or whoever should carefully consider their words, maintain level heads and act with respect. Respect is not demonstrated by suggesting a minority of mindless idiots are representative of anything. One of the many joys of this campaign has been how it has awakened political awareness across almost every single section of society. The success enjoyed by the many should not be sullied by the actions of the few.

Police officers must be kept free from the distractions of rhetoric better suited to the playground that the political stump. If crime has been committed it will be investigated and dealt with appropriately but quite simply police officers have better things to do than officiate in spats on social media and respond to baseless speculation of the potential for disorder on and following polling day”

She who must be obeyed now intends voting no. Make of that what you will.

There is no way to differentiate truly between an individual response from a group IP or individual IP without one heck of a load of extra work.

You consider it arrogant to describe some of the attitudes of Yes, which consists of just Vote Yes and we’ll sort it all later, and in order to demonstrate your disapproval of such “arrogance” you won’t listen to the link.

Is there no danger that you are confirming the “I’d rather go sleepwalking” attitude by doing so.

I have gone to the trouble of opening a fair few links, not all, provided by the Yes campaign and what I note is:-

You’ll hear more from that side of “They’re saying scotland is too wee and is a subsidy junkie” in a whining self-victimising voice, than you will ever hear from any one in the No campaign.

You’ll hear complaints, invoking Godwin’s Law, about BBC bias in “comparing” Independent Scotland to the rise of Hitler (even though the direct comparison was with the Weimar Republic, you know, the jolly musical bits in the bleak film Cabaret), and then, without a hint of irony, they will have David Hayman inhabit the clothes of Charlie Chaplin from The Great Dictator, placing themselves on the anti-nazi side, but still butchering the speech because there is a sentiment there, in the original, that does not fit the Nationalist agenda.

I will still be here on Friday and, if it is a No vote, the Broken Britain attitudes that you and I identify will still have to be fixed. I strongly suspect that, in that event, the SNp and their entryists from ‘radical” Labour and the SSP will be focusing on the next Independence campaign rather than on balancing our books whilst trying to deliver social justice.

If it is a Yes Vote, well, after a wild party, the cold wind of realism will have to be faced and the details of “Aye, we’ll deal with that once we get our Yes vote”, will have to be dealt with.

There will be an awakening. Will it be an awakening from a bad dream? Or a wakening up to face a nightmare reality?

Sterling could ‘plunge into abyss’ and Scotland faces unprecedented austerity if it’s ‘Yes’: Economists and business leaders issue dire warnings on eve of referendum

By Rob Davies for the Daily Mail and This Is Money Reporter

Scotland risks unprecedented austerity and the pound could ‘plunge into the abyss’ if the referendum results in a Yes vote, economic experts have warned.

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research expressed dismay at Alex Salmond’s ‘Plan B’ if an independent Scotland is barred from using the pound.

The think-tank said the SNP leader’s back-up plan – adopting the pound informally and reneging on Scotland’s share of Britain’s borrowings – was ‘opportunistic’ and would saddle every taxpayer in the rest of the UK with an extra £5,900 of debt.

The pound has already seen around 10 cents wiped off its value against the dollar since mid-July – it fell to $1.61 on currency markets this month, although it has recovered to trade at $1.63 this morning.

It warned that defaulting on its debts would make Scotland an economic pariah, because it would be seen as too untrustworthy to borrow on the international money markets.

This would lead to an ‘unprecedented degree of austerity and the eventual collapse in the currency regime’, it predicted.

Danny Alexander, the chief secretary to the Treasury, said this scenario would see Scottish bonds – loans from international investors – downgraded to ‘junk’ status. This happens when it makes no sense for investors to lend money to a country because the risk of not getting it back is too high.

‘Junk status for Scottish bonds would condemn us all to higher interest rates and higher taxes to pay the inflated interest payments,’ Mr Alexander said.

‘That would consume vast amounts of money that could be spent on the NHS.’ He added: ‘The truth is that the entire economic case for separation is junk. Businesses, think-tanks, and international organisations all confirm the same thing – separation is risky, costly and bad for Scotland.’

The warning was issued as one of the City’s most respected economists said an independence vote would see sterling ‘plunge into the abyss’.

Albert Edwards, of the French banking giant Societe Generale, said that if Scotland broke away, the chance of the rest of Britain leaving the EU would increase and this would cause international investors to pull their money out of the UK.

‘Capital will not be moving from north of the Scottish border to the south. It will be moving out of the UK altogether,’ Mr Edwards said.

He also pointed to Scotland’s huge exposure to the banking sector compared to the rest of the UK after independence.

Meanwhile, the business community issued its final impassioned pleas on behalf of the United Kingdom last night, as Scots prepared for a vote that could change it for ever.

With heated debates still raging about the economic prospects of an independent Scotland, the Confederation of British Industry said the Union offered the best chance of jobs and growth.

In an 11th-hour appeal, the CBI called on Scots to recognise the potential for economic prosperity afforded by the Union.

It said that ‘the economic recovery is now under way and keeping the United Kingdom together is the best way to grow the economy and boost jobs’.

Veteran City commentator David Buik of stock broker Panmure Gordon said: ‘It’s passion with little economic or financial logic being considered.

‘Both Labour and the Tories have failed ignominiously to close the wealth gap. In fact it has got wider, with the rich getting richer and the poor poorer.’

US economic gurus Alan Greenspan and Robert Zoellick added their voices to the torrent of opposition from leading figures in global finance.

Greenspan warned that the SNP’s economic plans were so implausible they really should be dismissed out of hand. And Zoellick said independence would be a ‘tragedy for the West’ that would ‘not work out well for the Scots either’.

The series of last-ditch appeals capped a fortnight in which dozens of business leaders in sectors including banking, retail and oil have expressed grave reservations about the impact of separation.

Analysts at Rabobank said the Scotch whisky industry could be thrown into turmoil, with major threats, including increased export tariffs, if Scotland cannot immediately join the European Union.

The warnings follow similar concerns expressed by business figures in banking, oil and retail.

  22. It will be good to see the blog getting back to defending/attacking the board after the vote, and more interestingly dissecting the pros and cons of our new signings in the weeks to come.

    But first the vote.

I am old enough to have lived and voted thru about 7 UK General Elections. The winners in these elections are decided by middle England and they always will be.

This is a chance for my vote to be more meaningful.

It is a chance to be in control of our own destiny and to get the government we vote for, which will never again be the Tories.

It is a chance to seize the day.

    It’s a YES for me.

  23. If we go independent… does that mean it’ll be at last safe for me to take my Scottish flag to Parkhead, that many on here warned me – so often over the years – would be tantamount to suicide?
