Deila and Hutter bedding into their new teams

1385

There are parallels between Salzburg and Celtic.  After an outstanding season Salzburg lost their coach, Roger Schmidt, in May to Bayer Leverkusen, appointing Adolf Hutter (commentators beware), who previously managed Austrian Bundesliga club Grodig and is largely unknown outside Austria.

Unlike Ronny Deila, Hutter has not tried to change Salzburg’s system, but the period of transformation has been blamed for Salzburg failing to overcome Malmo in the Champions League play-off round (Malmo taxed Juventus in Turin last night before two second half Tevez goals settled things).  New instructions, new training techniques and, in some cases, new personnel present challenges.

Ronny has had a few false starts but the return of Scott Brown at the weekend, the return to form of Kris Commons, who will surely start, and the addition of Scepovic, Tonev and Wakaso to the squad give reason for confidence.

‘Complete cobblers. No way will they refuse to “keep” us in.’

    ##########################

The leader of the centre-left bloc in the European Parliament has poured scorn on Scottish independence advocates’ claims that a separate country could quickly rejoin the EU, saying “it will take years” before clearing all the political hurdles.

Italy’s Gianni Pittella, head of the Socialists and Democrats group, warned on Tuesday that Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish Nationalist party, was gambling with his country’s place in Europe rather than building a basis on which to build a more just society. Mr Pittella’s S&D grouping includes Britain’s pro-union Labour party.

“It is clear Scotland’s admission to the EU will not be as automatic and easy as Yes supporters claim,” Mr Pittella said, noting a new application to join the 28-country bloc would likely be held up by countries “worried about the implications for independence movements at home”.

Spain, which is facing a separatist movement in Catalonia, is widely seen as the most resistant, and Madrid’s EU minister recently warned it could take five years to clear all the political hurdles. All 28 countries must agree unanimously to admit a new member. Mr Salmond has argued that as a region that abides by all EU laws, restoring membership should prove seamless.

In his statement, Mr Pitella, a member of Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi’s Democratic party, said that once Scotland left the EU, its border with England would become “a customs frontier, with controls and tariffs”, adding that EU development funding would also end.

He also warned that even if Scotland were to renegotiate EU admission, it would likely lose its portion of the British rebate and was unlikely to win opt-outs to euro membership and the EU’s passport-free Schengen travel area – something the UK currently has.

“No new member has been accorded such special treatment,” Mr Pittella said.

Scotland’s referendum is being closely watched in Brussels through fear that independence could kindle a series of secessionist movements in Spain, northern Italy and Belgium. This would present the incoming commission of Jean-Claude Juncker with complex additional challenges on top of the conflict in Ukraine, flagging competitiveness and threatened energy security.

Happy to accept the clarification. I was not there. The germane point remains

I wasn’t trying to be a smart #%$€ it’s just very amusing the whole story behind it. My mate ( who is a very polite English Celtic supporter ) was talking to a guy at the bar. This bloke was watching the football but back from the rest of us ( happens a lot being in England) didn’t pay much attention to the guy but was at the bar after Broonie had equalised and my mate mentioned he had just wandered off. I think that was him and at no time was there anything remotely abusive or threatening said or sung… ( the ref may have got some abuse) there were folk in the front of the pub happily having meals. My theory is that he made the accusations to get press coverage because he was out of the loop…

PM of Spain wouldn’t have a vested interest in this would he?

Like a yes vote firing up the Catalonia independence issue?

    Of course he would.

For anyone interested I always said that I would write a few words about why I will be voting Yes — but that I would not clog up the blog with my opinions.

So if you are interested in my lighthearted but somewhat personal analytical discourse then here is a link.

SCOTLAND – INTO THURSDAY AND BEYOND – WHY THIS BOZO WILL BE VOTING – YES

We come at it from different experiences and so arrive at different solutions.

2008 was a disaster for the UK but had the taxpayer not stepped in to save society as they see it, then I would have considered moving to Iceland where the fish quota is higher and easier to catch and hearing is assured my pension and savings being swallowed up in the general debt.

Mind you had the taxpayer not stepped in we would have had a fairer society in that everyone’s pensions and savings would have gone and we would all be starting from scratch.

Not sure that working folk who had paid their taxes and saved all their lives would have thought that fair mind you, which is why I ask what is a fair society?

The thing is we all get wounded by life but we do not have to let the wound fester, we take responsibility for curing ourselves although again in my experience the miracle was that this was done by administering to others not separating from them.

I really must set up a blog to explain further.

    Paul67,

I wasn’t that impressed with Tonev. I know it’s early days and was his debut, but we’ll see.

A wee word of advice to young McGregor.

‘You can pass to a player in a better position to score than you are’ – there was at least 3 times on Saturday where you tried to hit a screamer. Have a look about you, head up.

& before I get vilified, I appreciate what the lad done in Europe for us.

    ===================================

I think you’ll find that it was McGregor that passed the ball to Commons for the winner.

  9. My friends in Celtic,

As this is a football blog, with only one day to go for a game changing referendum,we still don’t know what currency we will pay for our future season tickets in. Unbelievable, but sadly true.

But what I do know is that if Alex Salmond can pull off a” tail wagging the dog” currency union then we will have him for at least a generation.

He will have achieved the near impossible against all the odds and will be lauded as a new Scottish “Braveheart”. He will be untouchable and all talk of alternative parties will be fantasy.

So ultimately a vote for yes is a vote for the SNP, AS and all his laws.

No matter how it is dressed up.

Absolute cobblers and fear mongering. Loads of agendas but to exclude a country that has been a member because of internal british rearrangement of political accountability just won’t happen. I have lived in continental Europe for 38 years; believe me it just won’t happen.

  17. Edgars Rinkevics, the Latvian foreign minister, told the BBC Scotland would be considered a “new country” and would have to go through the full accession process.

Although he predicted this would not take as long as for recent entrants such as Croatia, who had to wait more than a decade, he refused to back the SNP’s claim it could be completed in only 16 months.

However, he also raised the possibility that the rest of the UK might not automatically inherit the UK’s membership of the EU and disclosed the European Commission was “considering” that question.

Taken from a telegraph article, Google will get you there mate.

  20. Scotland is not a member of the EU, it is a part of an EU member state. And that’s an important difference.

I believe that an independent Scotland would become a member of the EU. But how long it would take or what the entry conditions would be is something that no one can tell you right now.

And anyone who “assures” you that it could be done in 18 months and with exactly the same membership conditions that the UK currently have is simply making it up as they go along.

It’s not an internal british rearrangement, we are creating a new constitution for a brand new country. We will no longer be part of the UK or the EU and if we do wish to be part of Europe then we will have to go through the process to become a member state. From everything I’ve read you can’t just join EU it takes at least 5 years and even then all 28 countries have to accept you as a member. That goes for any country not just a New Independent Scotland.

  27. I’ve obviously not done a statistical analysis of this but it appears that most of the no voters on here do not have a vote is that fair ? Or maybe its just the most vociferous no voters that are grabbing the attention?

So longer than 16 months, Spain says 5 years plus and it took Croatia a decade to gain EU membership.

So how long will it be before Scotland can join?

  30. Philbhoy,

Unlikely … we keep being told that an independent Scotland would be massively wealthy, so would likely be a net contributor to the EU.

    GerryBhoy,

The EU would not be removing Scotland from the EU, Scotland would remove itself by leaving the EU member state.
