Deloitte reports new reality for football industry

257

Deloitte rattled out a quick summary of transfer spend in the window just closed in the richest five European leagues.  Clubs in two of the five, the Bundesliga and La Liga, made profits on their transfer activity of £15m and £120m respectively.  Serie A’s net spend was £60m and Ligue 1’s was £55m.  The English Premier League did not get the hardship memo, net spend there was £560m.

Below these leagues, transfer spend barely registers.  Even in England, that £560m net spend is down from the £905m spend in the summer of 2020, a period with empty stadiums, itself a drop on 2019.

It is what Deloitte terms the midmarket, transfers between £10m and £25m, that was most affected.  A year ago there were 33 deals in that space, this year there were only 20, remarkably, two of which put money in Celtic’s coffers.

The crisis at La Liga clubs was brewing well before it reached the Camp Nou this year.  Real Madrid and Barcelona brought viewers and commercial revenue to the league but that market is in drastic retreat.  The Spanish era is over.

Ligue 1’s TV deal collapsed last year, leaving many clubs on the brink.  PSG’s impressive transfer moves will shift some floating viewers from Spain to France, but that will hardly shift the dial for most clubs’ finances.

The Bundesliga was the only one of the five to see an increase in gross spend, which they more than offset by selling to the English Premier League – the last functional market in Europe.

There has never been a collapse in transfer spend across Europe like this.  Markets below the top tier depend on selling talent upwards; TV, sponsorship and gate money is not enough to pay the bills.

Football will find its level but I expect there will be bargains in January and next summer as the full consequences of where the industry is begin to hit home.  Generating the money we did for Ajer, Edouard, as well as Frimpong, could prove significant for years to come.

Of course, if your directors were briefing fans that you “Need to sell players”, but you were not able to do so, I don’t fancy your prospects.

  1. I must commend Paul67 on that article ; insightful and thought provoking.

Would hope this would lead to a more democratic change to the European structures where we can also find a suitable starting point.

  2. ERNIE LYNCH,

I saw that also, it was a Tory but I never heard what was said. I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.

Hope it was that tosser Fraser or Mundell both have previous.

Saw that too – don’t know what was said, but there seemed an immediate and genuine reaction of disgust to whatever it was.

Hopefully come out in the washing – my money would be on Murdo UVFraser

  4. TurkeyBhoy,

The article you refer to also mentioned a defensive midfielder who is free agent. This is an areas of weakness for Celtic at present. When Celtic were beaten 5-1 at Ibrox in November 2000 with a lightweight midfield minus Paul Lambert, O’Neill went out and purchased Lennon. No team thereafter could overrun that team. We should learn from the past and strengthen the area that needs it most. What happens if CalMac get injured or suspended?

  5. See Japan got beat 1-0 by minnows Oman yesterday.Played a below strength team, and paid the penalty.Kyogo on the bench, with their other stars.Brought back a few memories.I used to be O&M manager at the Stadium.

    Beautiful job,beautiful country,terrific people.

  6. In Holyrood yesterday, acter the First Minister’s speech, Tory muppet Douglas Ross spoke remotely from home. As he did so, we could clearly hear the loud cry of a farmyard animal in the background throughout his question. Or maybe it was his partner tied to the bed behind the camera.

When the footage returned to Holyrood, the chamber was in hysterics.

Nicola Sturgeon furious at Tory MSP who made ‘except if you’re English’ comment in parliament

The First Minister wants Tess White to issue an apology for the remark at today’s FMQs

Nicola Sturgeon was left “deeply offended” at First Minister’s Questions today following a comment from a Tory MSP in the Scottish Parliament.

The First Minister was interrupted by Tess White while she was answering a question from Scottish Labour MSP Pauline McNeill about sectarian singing by Rangers fans in Glasgow on Sunday ahead of the Old Firm match.

Sturgeon was visibly upset by the comment from the member for the North East region and asked if an apology could be made.

The SNP leader said: “We should all come together to tackle this. Can I say clearly I know everybody across this chamber will support this.

“I take the view that anybody who chooses to live in Scotland whether they and their families have been here for generations or whether they have come to Scotland very recently, is home.

“This is their home and we should not allow anybody to say…”

The First Minister was interrupted by the Tory MSP, who said: “Except if you’re English.”

The Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone then spoke to the Chamber, she said: “I’d be grateful if members at all times in this Chamber, remember that we are privileged to represent the people of Scotland, and that at all times in this chamber, we treat one another with great dignity and respect.”

Sturgeon continued, visibly upset, she continued: “Presiding Officer I have just heard a comment made to me from a sedentary position.

“I would not normally do this but I am so deeply offended by the comment that I do want to after the session to take up with you, so that the, with your permission, member may be asked to reflect on that and to withdraw that comment.

“It was a comment that would have been unacceptable in any context within the context of what we are discussing here right now.

“I am deeply aggrieved that any member thought that was an appropriate thing to see.”

Tess White’s comments were back by Tory Councillor Kyle Thornton, who represents the Newlands/Auldburn ward on Glasgow City Council, he tweeted: “Well done @TessWhite4NE – Nicola stands by while her party and their hanger-ons stoke up anglophobia with winks, nudges and sheer ineptitude all in the name of trying to boost independence.”

The Scottish Conservatives have been contacted for comment.
