Deloitte reports new reality for football industry

257

Deloitte rattled out a quick summary of transfer spend in the window just closed in the richest five European leagues.  Clubs in two of the five, the Bundesliga and La Liga, made profits on their transfer activity of £15m and £120m respectively.  Serie A’s net spend was £60m and Ligue 1’s was £55m.  The English Premier League did not get the hardship memo, net spend there was £560m.

Below these leagues, transfer spend barely registers.  Even in England, that £560m net spend is down from the £905m spend in the summer of 2020, a period with empty stadiums, itself a drop on 2019.

It is what Deloitte terms the midmarket, transfers between £10m and £25m, that was most affected.  A year ago there were 33 deals in that space, this year there were only 20, remarkably, two of which put money in Celtic’s coffers.

The crisis at La Liga clubs was brewing well before it reached the Camp Nou this year.  Real Madrid and Barcelona brought viewers and commercial revenue to the league but that market is in drastic retreat.  The Spanish era is over.

Ligue 1’s TV deal collapsed last year, leaving many clubs on the brink.  PSG’s impressive transfer moves will shift some floating viewers from Spain to France, but that will hardly shift the dial for most clubs’ finances.

The Bundesliga was the only one of the five to see an increase in gross spend, which they more than offset by selling to the English Premier League – the last functional market in Europe.

There has never been a collapse in transfer spend across Europe like this.  Markets below the top tier depend on selling talent upwards; TV, sponsorship and gate money is not enough to pay the bills.

Football will find its level but I expect there will be bargains in January and next summer as the full consequences of where the industry is begin to hit home.  Generating the money we did for Ajer, Edouard, as well as Frimpong, could prove significant for years to come.

Of course, if your directors were briefing fans that you “Need to sell players”, but you were not able to do so, I don’t fancy your prospects.

“Markets below the top tier depend on selling talent upwards; TV, sponsorship and gate money is not enough to pay the bills.”

How true, and especially so in the case of Celtic. We are bombarded internally from some in our support and externally by the media about the difference between what we have taken in transfer fees and what we have spent on incoming players. Some ask “why isn’t all the money spent on transfers?”. Well the answer is in the above paragraph.

In the last two days a figure of c£58m sales and c£25m buys (to date), this calendar year was published – leaving a notional ‘profit’ of £33m. What it did not take into account was that our six-month interim loss for July to December 2020 was c£6m – the second-half figures from January to June 2021 are likely to be double that – so all in all possibly a £18m loss for the year.

If that is deducted from the ‘profit’ of £33m, that leaves around £15m to the good.

A quick look at our operating costs over the last few years and a realisation that Covid has had a drastic effect on income over the last two years should again focus minds that, “TV, sponsorship and gate money is not enough to pay the bills.”

We are solvent and in a position to cover any future ‘jolts’, just as we have done during Covid. We are not awash with money that we are refusing to spend.

I can’t explain the Ibrox conundrum, other than to repeat that we don’t have a line of well-heeled supporters, directors, & investors queuing up to pump money in to cover repeated losses in return for ‘confetti shares’. We live within our means and balance the books. Can I also add that there is no advantage/self-interest in anyone at Ibrox pressing the Administration, or, any other, self-destruct button, it is not going to happen – kit is merely wishful-thinking by some among us.

It wasn’t our financial model that resulted in a barren ’20/’21 season – it was the attitude and performance of players hitherto able to deliver trophy after trophy, and of course the improvement in form of the Ibrox team.

Finally, although we have a new manager who is inspiring confidence and we are moving to address the strengthening of the squad, I don’t believe we will be good enough to win the title this season – it may take at least one more.

  7. the good name of rangers – lol

    —————-

AFTER liaising with Police Scotland regarding a well documented incident on Sunday, Rangers have written to 3 individuals to confirm their indefinite ban from all club fixtures.

We reiterate our Club stance against all forms of discrimination and once again, underline our approach to so-called ‘fans’ who bring the good name of Rangers FC into disrepute.

  8. Weebobbycollins on

” and once again, underline our approach to so-called ‘fans’ who get caught and bring the good name of Rangers FC into disrepute.”

In other words, if you are going to be racist, try not to get caught.

  9. Celtic did well to sell the players and realise some of their value. It’s very much a different transfer market now so to get that money is significant and a testimony to years of good player trading and the gaining of a reputation for being a source of talent.

The equity in our squad appears mostly to have been cashed in, I don’t see the £20 million sale we make next summer if we don’t make the Cl league. We’ve a few years of player development ahead of us and can only hope the market recovers in the meantime because player trading is central to how we run.

The huns look set to survive on many millions again being put in by directors to finance the loss making business.

I’ve no doubt they’ll do that.

I’ve a lot of doubt regarding UEFA’s appetite to enforce FFP and don’t be expect any bans or reprimands anytime soon.

Win this title and they look to be in very bad shape with little to no money available for squad additions next summer.

    A huge title race awaits.

  10. BBCScotland article about thon singing on Sunday has a headline about sectrianism and then (and only then) talks of racism. Pandering to whataboutery is simply second nature to them. Sectarianism, of course, is endemic in Scotland. Racism is everywhere condemned.

  11. Parkheadcumsalford……………….

Agreed, some horrible wee nugget made a deliberate choice of how that story was reported and to use terminology that was inaccurate and to do so ins uch a way that we were associated with the offence.

The headline deflects from the reality, somewhat softens the blow to hundom and allows scotland a comfortable pass on a subject most of the world unites around.

For that to be embedded at the national broadcaster is horrible.

I try to avoid the other networks but the national broadcaster is significant.

White Ensign FC announce special Rangers release after stoking Celtic rivalry

    2nd September 2021Cameron Willis

Ninth tier English club White Ensign FC are set to release a special Rangers kit after floods of Ibrox supporters began following the club on Twitter.

Named after the famous navy flag of the same name, Rangers fans have also been asked which colour they would prefer the jersey to be between blue and orange.

According to the club’s official Twitter account, the jersey will be worn on away games and in cup games as they celebrate the link-up between the two sides.

This comes after White Ensign’s Twitter account blew up with Rangers followers following a call to arms aimed at the Ibrox club’s supporters.

White Ensign had asked Rangers fans if they liked the club’s crest and colours following Celtic fans teaming up with Catholic United.

Celtic fans flooded the green and white hooped account after they signed Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers, who used to play for the club.

Southend-based Catholic United play in the 11th tier of the English game in the Essex Olympian Football League.

Whilst local rivals White Ensign play in two divisions higher in the Essex Senior Football League, it didn’t stop them stoking the rivalry between supporters.

This worked in the club’s favour as Rangers fans drew on their proud military traditions and followed the club in the spirit of rivalry.

The football club also claimed that the reaction of Gers fans on Twitter saw their official Twitter account grow by 5000 supporters overnight.

The White Ensign, at one time called the St George’s Ensign due to the simultaneous existence of a cross-less version of the flag, is an ensign worn on British Royal Navy ships and shore establishments.

It consists of a red St George’s Cross on a white field with the Union Flag in the upper canton.

Rangers fans will now be following the progress of White Ensign FC closely and we’re sure Celtic fans will be doing the same for their Southend representatives.

    —-

Possibly although I’d expect a signing on fee to be more than any Ibrox bonuses.

I suspect players know when there’s interest in them, genuine interest.

Ajer, Eddie and our want always knew there was interest.

If a player knows there’s no interest then I don’t see what they have to gain by agitating for a move.

Prior to the pandemic celtic had around 40 million in the bank without champions league group stage income. That is off the back of previous sales and europa league participation.

Celtic dont need to sale anyone to break even. It’s part of the strategy to sell after we have developed younger players not the whole business plan.

I am sure a few younger players will emerge I.e. abada, scales, shaw, label, dawson, montgomary, murray,, robertson etc. but for now a small change has taken place most likely to allow for decent foundations to be built on I.e. peek type players whose impact will be saw on the pitch in the here and now.

Expect a few more mid 20 players in january to bulk up the squad to make us competitive then more focus on younger players thereafter.
