Deloitte reports new reality for football industry

257

Deloitte rattled out a quick summary of transfer spend in the window just closed in the richest five European leagues.  Clubs in two of the five, the Bundesliga and La Liga, made profits on their transfer activity of £15m and £120m respectively.  Serie A’s net spend was £60m and Ligue 1’s was £55m.  The English Premier League did not get the hardship memo, net spend there was £560m.

Below these leagues, transfer spend barely registers.  Even in England, that £560m net spend is down from the £905m spend in the summer of 2020, a period with empty stadiums, itself a drop on 2019.

It is what Deloitte terms the midmarket, transfers between £10m and £25m, that was most affected.  A year ago there were 33 deals in that space, this year there were only 20, remarkably, two of which put money in Celtic’s coffers.

The crisis at La Liga clubs was brewing well before it reached the Camp Nou this year.  Real Madrid and Barcelona brought viewers and commercial revenue to the league but that market is in drastic retreat.  The Spanish era is over.

Ligue 1’s TV deal collapsed last year, leaving many clubs on the brink.  PSG’s impressive transfer moves will shift some floating viewers from Spain to France, but that will hardly shift the dial for most clubs’ finances.

The Bundesliga was the only one of the five to see an increase in gross spend, which they more than offset by selling to the English Premier League – the last functional market in Europe.

There has never been a collapse in transfer spend across Europe like this.  Markets below the top tier depend on selling talent upwards; TV, sponsorship and gate money is not enough to pay the bills.

Football will find its level but I expect there will be bargains in January and next summer as the full consequences of where the industry is begin to hit home.  Generating the money we did for Ajer, Edouard, as well as Frimpong, could prove significant for years to come.

Of course, if your directors were briefing fans that you “Need to sell players”, but you were not able to do so, I don’t fancy your prospects.

I’d forgotten what they looked like!

No lecture, just my opinion. If you have other views on matters arising, I would read them assiduously.

  4. Kinda looking forward to Hungary – England in an hour or so. Hungary didn’t get out of their group, they were in with two recent World champions and the last European champions. They played well against Portugal though the final 3-0 score does not reflect that, were unlucky not to beat Germany, and drew 3-3 against a very good French team. Not quite a renaissance, but following huge investment in football and its’ stadiums etc they are certainly producing more high level players than for some time. Not to mention a high energy game. England of course will provide a tough challenge, but if Hungary bring their Euro game to the Puskas arena could be in for a good game.

Maybe you”re right. They said earlier in the year that they needed at least £20m to balance the books…and that the club needed to have a player-selling model ( probably meant just like us).

Yet they bombed on CL money and sold no one…..a real head-scratcher !!!

Rip off Britain/Scotland. £55 for an antigen test at Glasgow Airport. 25 Euros in the likes of Portugal and Spain.

Big Giorgios looks like he might also be useful defensively , clearing headers from opposition corners a la Chris Sutton.

  12. Bada-we had to do antigen tests 2days before we came home from adeje -£60

Then we had to arrange a pcr test for day 2 after we came home.£136.

I heard James Shaw on radio 4 reporting on Nicola Sturgeon’s anger with that Tory wuman. He mentioned the SECTARIAN singing on Sunday. Now, James Shaw is a good guy and an excellent reporter, so, that tells me that it is without doubt BBC editorial policy to refer to it as sectarian and not racist. Chris McLaughlin had already done the same in an earlier tweet.

False, cowardly policy from the BBC.

  14. Thanks for replies Bhoys, i think the Scottish Government’s test when you get home is being adjusted to accept other pharmacy tests, announcement expected next week, will update when i know

    Independence.

You’re in the minority now. Get used to it.

    ——————

On the contrary, the support for ” independence ” is evaporating rapidly.

Nicola Sturgeon has had her Gérard Ratner moment by jumping into bed with those who would destroy the Oil and Gas industry at the blink of an eyelid.

She has killed ” independence ” stone dead and flung those who screemed” It’s Scotland’s Oil ” under the proverable bus. She has destroyed her parties long held economic argument for ” independence ” in one swish of her pen which incidentally is made from a by-product of Oil.

Everything she and her ” government” touches turns to dust, and thank God more and more people are seeing the reality.

  17. If you’re watching the Hungary v England game, my player to watch is the Hungarian midfielder Andras Schafer. An energetic and busy midfielder, had a very impressive Euros and only 22 years old, currently playing in the Slovak league. Surprised he didn’t get a move after the Euros.

  18. CONEYBHOY

I didn’t expect to be, but ended up quite impressed at the clip you posted of Giorgios. Quite a variety of opportunist goals, deft touches, great headers, and very calm while varying his penalty kicks.

However, I don’t think the Ronaldo-like goal celebrations will go down too well here!😊

I was also a tad surprised at the number of times he ran to retrieve the ball out of the net – presumably his team were still chasing the game after he scored?

I assume you’re referring to BBC Scotland.

  20. Let’s imagine we had won the league last season.

Let’s imagine we had recruited a couple of free transfers and one player on an ‘undisclosed’ fee. The only one of these players to have had any significant game time looked overweight, lazy and had been sent off for two stupid challenges in a European tie.

Let’s imagine the all conquering (apart from the cups) team from last season had blown the chance to qualify for the CL despite what looked like a relatively favourable route rlto those riches.

Let’s imagine league form, despite a win against our closest rivals, was poor compared to the previous season and that we looked a bit out of ideas ponderous and so on.

Let’s also imagine our rivals had added 10 new players, most of them full internationals, several of them hitting the ground running, new coach introducing an exciting new style and apparently getting performances out of players we thought were done.

And imagine our rivals had a financial advantage that makes it likely that they will be able to buy again in January while we look to be out of disposable cash to respond to any squad issues we might face at that time.

How would we be rating our chances of success in the league?

  21. Aussies 2-0 on China at half time. A peach of a through ball from Tom Rogic led to second goal.

    Leo Hjelde, £1.5m to leeds

    Returningn loan

    Duffy

    M. Elyounoussi

    Kenny

    Diago lax.

Over the last season the only players I think have contributed reasonable well were M. Elyounoussi, eduard and ajer. Of those 3 I reckon ajer will e most missed cause I dont think the other 2 have the high energy or pace to fit nto the team current team particularly well.

The transfers into the club this summer look decent but given the turnover of players and money brought in II would really like to see a 1st pick leftback brought in, if Scales/ Montgomery cant cut it as we already know boli wont and taylor is a weak point there and a box to box midfielder. I do expect mccarthy to be a good anchor/ spoiler.

  24. Bada,

Try Express Test in Braehead- PCR test starts at £59 and they also do other tests if the country you’re travelling to will accept them.

Where are you off to? Some countries don’t need them on arrival
