Deloitte reports new reality for football industry

257

Deloitte rattled out a quick summary of transfer spend in the window just closed in the richest five European leagues.  Clubs in two of the five, the Bundesliga and La Liga, made profits on their transfer activity of £15m and £120m respectively.  Serie A’s net spend was £60m and Ligue 1’s was £55m.  The English Premier League did not get the hardship memo, net spend there was £560m.

Below these leagues, transfer spend barely registers.  Even in England, that £560m net spend is down from the £905m spend in the summer of 2020, a period with empty stadiums, itself a drop on 2019.

It is what Deloitte terms the midmarket, transfers between £10m and £25m, that was most affected.  A year ago there were 33 deals in that space, this year there were only 20, remarkably, two of which put money in Celtic’s coffers.

The crisis at La Liga clubs was brewing well before it reached the Camp Nou this year.  Real Madrid and Barcelona brought viewers and commercial revenue to the league but that market is in drastic retreat.  The Spanish era is over.

Ligue 1’s TV deal collapsed last year, leaving many clubs on the brink.  PSG’s impressive transfer moves will shift some floating viewers from Spain to France, but that will hardly shift the dial for most clubs’ finances.

The Bundesliga was the only one of the five to see an increase in gross spend, which they more than offset by selling to the English Premier League – the last functional market in Europe.

There has never been a collapse in transfer spend across Europe like this.  Markets below the top tier depend on selling talent upwards; TV, sponsorship and gate money is not enough to pay the bills.

Football will find its level but I expect there will be bargains in January and next summer as the full consequences of where the industry is begin to hit home.  Generating the money we did for Ajer, Edouard, as well as Frimpong, could prove significant for years to come.

Of course, if your directors were briefing fans that you “Need to sell players”, but you were not able to do so, I don’t fancy your prospects.

I have made no such prediction.

I have questioned whether Celtic have done enough to ensure it does not happen.

That’s right – it unnecessarily adds to the ‘whataboutery’ arsenal that some will turn and aim against us.

To my mind, any of us can proudly celebrate our club’s faith-driven origins while also embrace how we more broadly opened our doors – as we’ve always done; that’s the Celtic way. HH

    What’s this???

Some confusion/muddled thinking by BBC Scotland and the SMSM??

A MSP becomes embroiled in a ‘race-hate’ farrago for implying the FM is ‘anti-English’.

Meanwhile blatant anti-Irish racism on the streets of Glasgow is called ‘sectarianism’.

    Can anyone explain the difference?

  4. Sevco’s fan boy media partners ,shown up by the Daily Record…..a bit of irony in there……this will be because the huns are charging media outlets 25k for stadium access, i really hope the clowns have ponied up the cash, because they will get emptied asap

  5. We can be safe in the knowledge that Sevco will launch one of their legendary ‘ internal investigations ‘ into this..

If you have a general look online you get the impression a good number of Rangers fans feel their club is being unfairly criticised, over the last few weeks. Therein lies the problem.

Who is actually going to be at the next press conference if the mainstream don’t have access and the ‘official media partners’ are being investigated by the police? It’s all an incredible state of affairs for Rangers to put themselves in.

The latest story of racism and general unacceptable behaviour connected with Rangers shows this isn’t some fringe element. Official Media Partners with access to the top of the club involved. The club have a serious amount of work to do to weed out this mentality.

Fair play to Michael Stewart. You’d be waiting a very long time for Tom English to speak up like this.

  7. JHB, Are you also posting as Sherbrook_loyal on FF?

Phil has some of the posts up on his site today.

  10. I met this David Edgar some years ago. He went out of his way to demonstrate how unbigoted he was by saying his girlfriend was a Catholic and that Paul McStay’s office was on the same floor as his and that Paul was a really lovely guy, plus, some of his pals were big Celtic supporters etc. etc…

It didn’t work because I left thinking, ‘you stinking, bigoted, lying hun.’

  11. The ad attacks today are just bonkers.

A cruse, jet2 holidays, Ange then eddie why, then cinderella,

  12. This ‘everyone, anyone’ is no more than a defensive shield against any accusations of bigotry from their perceived enemies. I’m fed up hearing how they are doing everything they can to eradicate bigotry and educate their fans. Time to call out these peepil at the top of the rancid club.

  13. BBC Scotland making big issue of the Racism faced by the English team in Hungary last night. Boris Johnson piling in, calling for Hungary to be punished. All well and good and I hope they are. But both conveniently forget that they, England and Scotland, have their racists and plenty of them. How about calling them out and certainly in the case of Scotland no more deflection and whataboutery by characterising it as sectarianism.

Scotland’s Shame cannot be ignored any longer.

I see that on the email you received re the Ross County match on Sept 11. Two points, given that it is an SPL game why would season ticket holders need to be “allocated” a ticket? And the email states that there “will be no general sale of tickets” when in fact there has already been a public sale, and, as of five minutes ago, there still is, though very few tickets still available scattered around the stadium. Via Ticket Master.

Interesting and fairly powerful sentiments expressed on here re the recent rush to follow Catholic United on twitter.

Celtic is a club open to all.

Was there just a little bit of simplistic tagging as a result of our new signing having worn green and white hoops for a team with the word “Catholic” in their name?

    Quite possibly.

In the grand scheme of things I didn’t see the great harm and sincerely hope other Celtic fans are not too disconcerted by it.

    As for the other lot?

I have a much stronger view.

    There is nothing equivocal here.

They saw the publicity generated by Catholic United and did what supremacists do.

They decided “we’re not letting that one go”

And, pathetically, did what they did.

I actually feel sorry for this ensign club.

They have no idea who just decided to “support” them.

In fairness there is a link with them going back to 1968 when Bob Kelly provided them with a set of strips.

Interesting that there has been a club in Essex since the 1930s with the word Catholic in its name. Is there a Scottish equivalent anywhere?
