Dembele marks a breakout from previous contacts

306

There was a bit of surprise in England yesterday that Moussa Dembele, subject to a £6m bid from Tottenham in January, chose to move to Glasgow, instead of remaining in London, or picking up another option in the south. Perhaps it surprised a few here too.

Why choose Celtic? We’re an exciting place to play football, again, which as Moussa made clear, has a lot to do with Brendan Rodgers. Celtic’s aspirations have always been to qualify for the Champions League, but that ambition is a lot easier to see now than it has been since Martin O’Neill’s time.

Two of the four managers we’ve had since Martin outperformed him in the Champions League, but that’s hard fact that is often needed to overcome perceptions of a more golden era.  Martin sparkled, but Gordon and Neil got results at the top table.

When rating a player I avoid YouTube at all costs, those who watch him every week provide far more reliable verdicts. On that front, Fulham fans are full of praise.

I suspect this signing marks a breakout from the previous range of agents and contacts (which appeared increasingly limited to someone in Manchester and an Israeli agent). One of the things Ronny was unable to bring with him was links into a Champions League-ready talent pool. Irrespective of his coaching abilities, Brendan is already ahead on that front.

On paper, signing a guy who scored 23 in 39 for Sporting Gijon was a result, but Stefan Scepovic is a name we’ll forget soon enough. He competed (loose use of the term) with John Guidetti and (then down the pecking order) Leigh Griffiths for the striker role but the feeling around Celtic was that we weren’t seeing the best of him.

He’s now off to newly-relegated Getafe, who clearly saw more in him on loan last season than we ever did.

MON set the tone for the next few years at Celtic, I would rather look at were we were before than were we stood after his tenure.

Don’t think Lenny would agree that he was a better manager than MON.

I only became aware of Shane Duffy as a result of rumours linking him with a move to Celtic (from here?). So during the first game I watch, where I am aware of him, he gets outmanoeuvred by a striker, gets wrong side, gets done for pace and rashly brings the striker down, resulting in a red card.

Can Efe and Bhoyata no do that for us already?

Spotted the glib and shameless one flying out of Glasgow this afternoon and not a newsman in sight. I said to my boy there is Dave King when he was at least 30 yrds away, he looked over at us either he has super hearing or that strange eye of his can lip read long distance.

Clough’s Forest have the admirable record of successive EC wins.

However, at that time, they were two of the drabest, boring, anti football performances that had ever been seen in that competition.

So the ‘undisclosed’ transfer fee the Huns paid for new signing from MK Dons who spent the 2nd half of last season on loan at Kilmarnock is reported as £60k , bringing their close season transfer spend to – £60k

  16. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

On the subject of transfer budgets (hate the word ‘warchest’), would I be right in assuming that Brendan’s reported £15m budget is net of any income from transfers out and spend to include transfer fees plus wages in 1st year?

My nephew received a letter from Celtic informing him that his application for Zebra Finance had been declined. The letter advised him that they would hold his seat until a specified date, which I can’t remember, but it was about 5 or 6 days.

Fortunately his missus was able to sign up in her name, so he got his seat. I didn’t want to pry, so didn’t ask him why he was declined, so cannot comment on how strict they are. I presume their hands are tied by consumer-credit legislation.
