Derision, hiding, wanting to win the league?

935

I don’t know is that was the worst home performance I’ve seen, but it was up there. We look like a broken team. Dundee were comfortable throughout, limited Celtic to one genuine chance in the game (in the 76th minute), and caused havoc during their regular attacks on Craig Gordon’s goals. Their best chance came from a corner kick (what else), which was sent over by a player who stopped to head the ball from 5 yards.

Charlie Mulgrew is not the most gifted player, he’s not a central midfielder and he’s not game-fit yet, but despite putting in an indifferent shift last night, he never hid.  The juxtaposition between him and others was stark.  We need players with attitude – the captain back on form, Kris Commons fully fit and starting, and others taking their lead.

Confidence is on the floor. Mistakes, backwards passing and long balls forward were all subject to derision, but I think last night was the first time I’ve heard a Celtic substitute being booed onto the field.  All because he doesn’t want to renew a contract for his position as occasionally-used squad player.  The seriousness of the situation is clearly lost on those who want to boo a player taking the field instead of encouraging the guy to help us win a game.  The whole experience got me thinking, how many of us actually want to win this league?

You better believe they want to win it at Pittodrie.  They have focus, form, packed stands and patience.  They also enjoy the ‘Leicester City effect’ – everyone not competing directly with them wants them to win.  The rest of Scottish football is desperate for us to tear ourselves apart right now.  We need to circle the wagons, live up to the reputation we like to think we have, and play our role in delivering this title.

You want 10-in-a-row?  Bring me your complaints in May, but for now get your shoulder to the wheel.  This is not our first performance crisis and it won’t be our last, as a collective, we need to be smart in dealing with these situations.

Everyone at Celtic Park (and beyond) knows this is not good enough, and there’s going to need to be big changes in the summer, but we need to get our act together and put the inquest on hold until the end of the season.

  1. LOL at those quoting Henrik’s record in Sweden as reasons not to give him the Celtic job.

You just don’t get football? You just don’t get heroes? You seem not to get the ineffable feeling that makes club’s like ours great.

Ronny Deila’s stats were much better than Henrik’s. Black and white, Ronny’s the man. Hypothetically, theoretically, academically, nutritionally and physically-fitnessally, Ronny’s THE man.

How’s that working out for us nearly two years in? Feeling vibrant? Feeling full of that Celtic-ness? Excited by the Hoops? Itching to get to paradise and roar on Ronny’s bhoys?

One really refreshing thing about the blog today despite all the doom and gloom is that the absurd posts of” in ronny we trust” etc have disappeared. ..

That’s a big “IF” you finish with based on our current momentum.

  4. You’ve outdone Ronny himself with such drivel. We know the problems start higher up but the manager is so out of his depth.Don’t get me wrong I still go to CP every home game and have never booed a Celtic team (thats so not the Celtic way) but there’s something not right about the players attitudes.we want to win the League (ridiculous statement) of course we do but the lack of commitment on the park doesn’t match this

  5. I can’t remember who it was that mentioned it. Having a Poll to pick the Team, or players, ffs.

    What chance does Ronny have?

  6. It’s all about the money and getting the OF back on track.

Is Ronny a dead man walking, many seem to think so, but if the suits do decide to get rid, it’s no just him, there is JC and JK and a whean of backroom staff, Dr’s, coaches, Physios etc that RD has brought in.

It will cost a small fortune to get shot of them all.

    I care about Celtic deeply.

I care about what’s best and not what’s popular. Do you think legends don’t get hounded when they come back as coaches?

Just look at AC Milan appointing Seedorf then Inzaghi

  9. The dropping of two points to Aberdeen worries me a lot less than the performance.

We had 10 men v Hamilton but could have won and in spite of poor first half performances v ICT and Ross County we score 5 lost nome and got 6 points.

But last night with 11 men on the park the whole game we toiled and were lucky to get a draw.

Any more of that and we would not deserve to win the league if Aberdeen can perform better than us.

So just what happened last night? Why did Dundee win neay every tackle or intercept nearly every pass?

Why when they closed down our back four were we unable to go long, retain the ball and build an attack?

Why when Dundee broke as they often did was there so much space for them to run into without a challenge in front of the runner rather than a risky one from behind?

If I were RD I would be going over the game and pointing out the faults to players and asking for solutions that the players think might work.

If they are all in it together as RD says then that is how I would use that point to benefit from players and management being in it together. You don’t get performances like that from a team that is all together.

Dundee might have done us a favour last night by forcing a rethink of our approach.

They only thing that should matter is what works. Why did nothing work last night?

  10. Common ground?

We can all agree that our team is not performing as desired.

We can all agree that the players appear to be performing individually below par.

We don’t really knows what goes on at CP on a day by day basis, or who is responsible for what.

We all make assumptions about some or all of the key questions, and those assumptions drive our conclusions.

Most of us will reach logical conclusions based on the underlying assumptions. The different opinions as what the root cause of the malaise at Celtic is derive from different opinions as to who is responsible for making decisions.

So can we compare assumptions to see whether or not we all look at Celtic from the same standpoint?

    Day to day stuff

    A) Who actually picks the team that plays each week? Is it RD and his staff, armed with the fruits of statistical and medical analysis of each player throughout the week in training, supported by their own observations informed by their experience as manager/coach or ex player in order to determine who is most appropriate for each role?

    B) Who decides what structure the team adopts each match? IS it RD and his team, armed with a detailed analysis and report on the opposition, the state of the ground and general playing conditions, the players available to Celtic and their own opinions as to appropriate tactics to win such a match?

    C) Who chooses and instructs the on field team captain who provides leadership on the park? Is it RD and his team, supported by daily conversations and contact with that player, a process of education and sharing of team tactics and instructions, informed guesses as to the likely form and nature of opposition and the methods to be adopted in overcoming same?

    D) Who provides in game guidance and advice from the touchlines. IS it RD and his team, communicating clearly and with purpose to counter opposition threats and draw the best performance possible from our players?

    E) Who provides half time support and instruction designed to improve on field team performance and deal with specific issues arising in the first half? IS it RD and his team armed with 45 minutes of observation and their accumulated football knowledge and vision?

    F) Who determines what substitutions are required and at what time, in order to improve the on field performance of the team as a whole? Is it RD and his team equipped with their tactical vision and game plan shaped by observation of events and awareness of risks and opportunities presented by each potential change?

    G) Who provides after match de briefing, staff management and support services designed to prepare players for future matches and learn lessons from past disappointments? IS it RD and his staff, supported by their observation of 90 minutes plus of game time, and their experience and football wisdom?

    Running the business stuff

    a) Who identifies appropriate goals and targets for the team and measures actual performance against budgeted performance and manages variation from budget in discussion with the responsible tactical officials. Is it the board of directors or the owner?

    b) Who communicates decisions from that body, and results to that body, to ensure that discussions are held timeously on appropriate matters and decisions and instructions imparted efficiently? Is it the chief executive and his staff?

    c) Who identifies current team needs and requirements, assesses and evaluates potential acquisitions and advises on value of same to the team? IS it RD and his coaching staff or has that function in part or whole been reassigned to the executive function?

    d) Who identifies and manages the value of each individual player in relation to the club, and assesses and advises on when the club? IS it the executive function?

    e) Who determines team structures and focus for the purposes of shaping training and development work, so the team can meet identified goals and targets. Is it RD and his coaching staff?

    f) Who decides on the structure and composition of the game management staff (coaches and manager)? Is it the board of directors?

    g) Who is responsible for the overall success or failure of the team? Is it RD and his coaching staff, the executive function or the board of directors?

Without knowing the answers to each of these questions it is hard to determine who is actually to blame for the current lack of form at Celtic.

It is tempting to assume that the answer to most of the day to day stuff is RD and his team, in which case I believe they should carry the can, but I cannot help but suspect that RD’s hand has been forced by other agencies a number of times.

When considering the business stuff, it is tempting to assume that the answer is mostly the board, in which case, in my opinion, they have been failing in their duty to the stakeholders by permitting a seemingly inexorable slide into mediocrity, despite large (in domestic terms) amounts being made available to acquire players and pay wage bills. The threat to potential champions’ league group stage income arising from that decline, and the resulting failure to gain entry to the play off stages, or fall at those stages, is both real and pressing. Surely directors undertaking their duties properly will have discussed these issues in depth at board level and reached a consensus on the appropriate business decisions to be made here? If they have then are we suffering RD simply as an expedient until the end of the season?

If the answers to the questions are not those generally supposed, then perhaps the root cause of impending failure would be the distortion of “normal” lines of responsibility and accountability to support a sub optimal management structure at Celtic Park. If that is the case then I fear changes in individual personel (playing, coaching or management staff) will not solve the problem. A number of managers have left Celtic in recent years (MON, GS,NL) for reasons other than failure on the pitch, and I wonder whether or not such departures have been the result of interference in the playing side of management, rather than the publicly stated reasons?

I put that Poll up, guilty as charged.

I have supported Ronny all the way. Indeed I posted in support of him remaining at the club while travelling to game last night.

The poll came about after an exciting finish to the Inverness game when he had Allan, Roberts and Christie on the park. That game had been rotten until the substitutions.

The Poll offered Celtic supporters a chance to pick 3 players they’d like to see play in the Hamilton game. The three mentioned above were selected. It was a bit of fun.

  13. I have spoken to 2 other supporters today. Both older than myself. One is nearer 80 than 70; the other nearer 70 than 60. We all had fairly sleepless nights after the horror show last night (and only one of us saw it).

I have to say I agree with TD about the booing, especially of a player coming on as a sub. Sad .

My mate in the Canaries reckons our captain may be suffering from “burn out”. Whatever it is, he is not the same player and we are in dire need of his heart and aggression.

If it is true at some of the older players are not playing for the manager, irrespective of whether the manager gets the sack, they must be shown the door. They are letting down not just the manager or even themselves for their total lack of professionalism; they are cheating those who pay their wages- we the support.

Play the young bhoys. They might get beat but at least we can expect them to give their all, the very least that has to be expected.

  14. I don’t think sacking Ronnie at this stage of the season is going to happen. That being the case, Steve Clarke should be added to the coaching team before our next League game. Also, play the kids at the weekend in the cup and make the entire 1st team squad sit in the stand to watch. Not in the comfy seats either, in among the fans.

It was mentioned that Ronny had thrown Boyata under a bus last week. Well, Dedryck’s certainly playing like it.

    Wee joke.

More seriously, is there a sense that the players aren’t entirely engaged/believe in Ronny’s methods and approach?

I would never select any of them again they are not to be trusted, as for the new guys I feel sorry for them getting caught in the middle of this transitional crap. I can’t wait to get this season over with and clear out that dressing room, maybe bring in some hungry dedicated athletic football players to replace this shower of bozo’s. Ron must look at some of their CV’s see all those caps and titles and then look at them on the park and wonder how is this possible, they are totally useless.

  24. Charlie Mulgrew did hide. The most obvious time, early in the second half, when he moved behind a defender to avoid having to take a pass from Roberts. He was posted missing at other points in the game too; when defenders or Craig Gordon could have done with someone showing for a pass

  25. timmy7_noted on

I can’t believe some of the stuff I’m reading on here today,I won’t stoop to name calling as many have but surely even the most myopic must see that we are getting worse.I have no evidence to suggest that the manager has any idea how to get us out of the mess he got us in.Starting with Mulgrew,Rogic and Armstrong was a suicide note and the bringing on of James Forrest!! If that is the answer what is the question?

I’ve been a season ticket holder since 1980 and I’m generally a happy clapper however its gone too far,we need a caretaker in to hopefully limp towards the title. The thought of us not winning the title and sevco lording it over us next year is to painful to think about.

I’m not going on Sunday I can’t possibly justify to myself that I should commit time and effort to a bunch of players who are giving nothing in return.

One more thing,Paul,Charlie Mulgrew worked hard last night? I thought he spent the night hiding and putting team mates into trouble with bad passes,he was a disgrace.

That statement is strange, incredible quote, “The players give 100%, but I don’t get 100% out of them,” he said. “They can play better than they did last night”.

That is a statement for a defeated outfit.

I’d be surprised some of it is Deila’s thoughts “The fans will stand behind us because they’re Celtic fans”.

  28. Maybe I’m reading it wrong but I don’t think Paul is ‘blaming’ the supporters at all. He’s saying similar to what I said last night after the game, many of the players look terrified on the ball and the howls of derision from the stands isn’t helping. I’m watching Celtic players wilting before my eyes, scared to carry the ball, petrified to pass it more than 10 yards, or doing the opposite, like we saw last night, and thumping it forward 50/60 yards purely because they want rid of it.

Ronny Delia isn’t good enough. I expressed my concerns after the two legs against Legia Warsaw. It wasn’t just that we got battered in Poland though, it was more to do with our formation, tactics and indiscipline in the second leg, having seen what we were up against after the first game. That for me was the first sign that Ronny struggles to adapt, an issue which has been evident for some time now.

I think it’s pretty inevitable that Ronny will be gone by the summer if not before but he shouldn’t be the only one. There are a number of players in that squad who simply aren’t good enough. Couple that with their appalling attitude and lack of desire and fight and you end up with the sort of performance that we witnessed last night.

Now to the board! Ronny has been given money to spend especially over the last three transfer windows, however, it’s not been vast sums. I don’t blame the board for selling the likes of Hooper, Forster and Wanyama, guys who want to move on after a short period in the Celtic Shop Window. No, I’m pissed off at the calibre of players that we’ve brought in to replace them. At Pittodrie a guy I know said to me at half time,

“A couple of years ago we came here with a midfield consisting of Wanyama and Ledley, now we’ve got McGregor and GMS!”

Says it all really, especially when Peter continues to take such large sums out of the club.

Without doubt the board’s ‘fiscal prudence’ have hindered Ronny but that doesn’t detract in any way from his own failings.

In spite of all of this……WE’VE GOT A TITLE TO WIN!!

I’ll never, ever understand why anyone could boo a guy on the park wearing a Hooped jersey. I know others feel differently as was evident last night. However, this league is there to be won and it’s going to need all hands to the pump if we’re going to get over the line. That means you, and you, and you, and you and all of us.

This Celtic team is poor and in my opinion, poorly led, but at this current moment in time, they need us. They need us to get behind them and to shout and scream them to this title. What they don’t need is to be pilloried every time they make a poor pass or elect for the wrong decision.

The close season will take care of itself. For now, let’s stand up for the Champions.
