DERMOT BACKS BRENDAN

CELTIC’S majority shareholder Dermot Desmond has admitted he likes “what Brendan is doing” as he puts his weight behind the manager.

The Hoops team chief has come in for criticism for refusing to change his open, attacking outlook against Borussia Dortmund in the Westfaelstadion on Tuesday night.

The result was a 7-1 thrashing with the hosts rattling five beind Kasper Schmeichel in the first-half as they totally overwhelmed the visitors.

CELTIC VIEWS…Dermot Desmond offers up-to-date thoughts on the champions.

Powerbroker Desmond shrugged it off with a “we weren’t at our best” comment after the Parkhead side had collapsed under the torrents of pressure from last season’s Champions League runners-up at the 81,000-capacity ground.

The heavy loss is the only reverse suffered by Rodgers and his players in this campaign in after 11 outings.

They have won all seven Premiership encounters – including the late 2-1 triumph over Ross County yesterday – while scoring 22 goals and conceding just one, Ronan Hale’s twice-taken penalty-kick in Dingwall.

There is a Premier Sports League Cup semi-final against Aberdeen to look forward to early next month after successes over Hibs (3-1) and Falkirk (5-2) on the way to Hampden.

Plus there was a breathtaking 5-1 landslide victory over Slovan Bratislava on matchday one of the new-look Champions League.

Asked about what he would like to see from Celtic in their next six games in the revamped format of Europe’s most prestigious competition, Desmond replied: “I would like to see some good results, home results, and maybe nick a point or two away.

JOLLY RODGERS…boss Brendan applauds the Celtic support.
“I think we have done exceptionally well so far. It’s interesting to play eight different teams, four at home and four away with all different rankings.
“I think it makes it exciting for the club, the supporters and people generally.”
Desmond spoke to BBC Scotland in the aftermath of the Hoops’ win in the Highlands and he added: “I am very pleased.
“I think we have played good football. We had a good start and could have played bad football, but we have played very good and exciting football.
“Unfortunately, we weren’t at our best on Tuesday. But, I like what we are doing, what Brendan is doing and I think we have a good squad.”
