‘DERMOT MUST BACK BRENDAN,’ LEGEND

CELTIC hero John Hartson has admitted he is mystified at the lack of backing for Brendan Rodgers.

The Hoops legend understands the emotions of the manager at the moment as he attempts to strengthen the squad for the rigours ahead.

Hartson said: “Clearly, he is a frustrated man. I get that. I don’t get the Celtic board not properly backing a man who has delivered them so much.

“Celtic should have got John McGinn. They should have more cover for the defence. Rodgers, within reason, should be given everything he asks for.

“If they hadn’t dragged their heels over the lad, who I rate highly, then he would be at Parkhead. I have no doubt about that.

“The money is there and it hasn’t been spent. But I wouldn’t blame Peter Lawwell for this.

“He is the chief executive. That means he has bosses – Lawwell doesn’t own the club – and top of the pile is Dermot Desmond. He has to back the man who has brought back the good times.

“The Ronny Deila era, with all due respect, was something of a nightmare towards the end.

“Rodgers has come in, won back-to-back trebles, given Rangers a couple of pumpings and has made the club a lot of money. He deserves more than he is getting.

“I can’t believe for the life of me that the Celtic board, headed by Mr Desmond, are not backing a manager who has brought new life to the football club.”
