Dermot’s return to the fray, Kodak moment

696

A Dermot Desmond interview! Remember him? It’s been a while since we’ve seen or heard from our major shareholder, so I am pleased STV got hold of him. His absence for so many years is not in itself an offence, but there has been no evidence he remains engaged with the club, and that’s not healthy.

His comments on Ronny Deila I agree with. Ronny is here because we think he can improve players and therefore improve the team. The evidence cited by Dermot Desmond (Nir Bitton, Tom Rogic), suggests he’s able to do this. There have been downsides of course. Ronny’s twice fallen in the Champions League to lesser-resourced (although decent) teams.

If we’re going to build a team we need to be patient enough to let the guy get on with the job.

The comments about a British league within 10 years are worth examining at a later date, but for brevity: this is no more than blue-sky thinking.

I agree in principle that technological changes are underway which will undermine the BSkyB business model. This model relies on the pull of English Premier League football to deliver high-value subscription rates from a huge portion of the UK population.

We talked in the summer about the switch to what the Americans call ‘cutting the cord’; moving away from expensive subscription TV to watching feeds streamed from foreign broadcasters, effectively free of charge. This is happening and its impact will only increase.

I know lots of CQNers are already consuming their English football in this manner, it works and it’s practically undetectable (i.e. it really is undetectable). But it’s not easy yet. You need to know what you are doing, and you need decent broadband. Products are improving all the time, as is broadband provision. Soon paying £100 per month for TV, as many do, will be a goodwill option.

Should there be even a modest shift in BSkyB’s ability to generate huge revenue from EPL football, the fallout in the English football bubble (it is a bubble) will be swift and structurally damaging.

Getting to the point. English football has a business model with risks which could bring it down. Technological changes are underway which undermine this model. Lots will happen in the next 10 years.

Let me share one of my favourite graphs………..

Kodak had a great marketing slogan, they called a great image a ‘Kodak moment’, when people would turn to their cameras to capture the memory on Kodak paper. The phrase was turned on its head in recent years when the realisation that Kodak’s entire business model was about to be destroyed by digital cameras.

The moment of realisation became the ultimate ‘Kodak moment’, it now meant a moment when you realise technology is about to wipe you out. Those who were saying this about Kodak 20 years ago were mocked. Some of us already think we’ve seen English football’s Kodak moment.

This is Kodak’s market capitalisation between 1989 and 2012, where was your Kodak moment?

Magners have kindly offered some CQNers access to the Fanzone at their Wellpark Brewery, just a few minutes walk from the stadium, on Thursday afternoon, from 4pm until 7pm.

Here’s the deal, email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com and you’ll go in the draw for a ticket.  Give a £1 (or more) to one of the Great Scottish Runners below, in aid of your Foundation, and you will feel a lot better about enjoying the pleasures of Magners’ Fanzone.  Put Magners in the subject line, to make sure your entry gets to the right place.

There will be not be many entries, so if you can make it, get busy…

    I think he knows everything.

Every single facet of liquidation including Res 12 and any other major shareholder resolution, since his initial investment.

He doesn’t care and the only way for his investment is to move on, leaving fireside fusiliers and rabble rousers

trailing in his very wealthy wake.

He’s an entrepreneur, that’s what they do, even when they are affectionately tied to Celtic

Anyone know who this co-commentator is on the Man Utd game and is he being paid by the word ? I’m starting to yearn for Michael Owen he that irritating…

And people wonder why well respected posters – not me btw – leave this site?

  6. perusal of other blogs,

celtic ones are in meltdown with many sweary words about DD.

not a one , ever says, i want to play something called rangers.

zombie ones are in meltdown, that DD tells it “johnny bhoy johnny” for real,

and says what the celtic supporters wont admit.

It’s sickening to hear DD trying to compare Celtic supporters to that scum.

    It’s not on.

He is encouraging bigotry, for money.

    We can do without that.

  9. Reading the blog .listening to Sam Cooke with Man U on in background.

Makes me realise how much my interest in the once beautiful game has diminished .

I look up only when some high pitched English commentator screeches at a sometimes exciting play

Looked up as Man U scored their second with the commentators sounding like fourteen year old girls in the playground looking at a Justin Beiber video.

The crowd was going wild with a quick scan of the crowd showing an international make up.

It’s a manufactured game now played with only a small part of the eye on the ball but the rest on the money.

Sporting integrity comes a distant second to the money.

The ref knows that a decision negatively affecting a favoured side is career suicide so will ref accordingly.

It won’t be long till the larger clubs want more from the pie and form the football version of the WWE.

Though modern over coached.possession football rarely entertains.

  10. Corkcelt,

He seen a decent long term investment nothing else and I can’t for the life of me believe you honestly think he had any other motives in putting money into Celtic, he loaned the club money and has taken £600K back every year without that debt being reduced that on top of dividends. If your gullible enough to believe the drivel about any emotional attachment please don’t expect anyone else to follow suit or even try justify the naievity of that argument.

All your argument about his wealth does is prove how greedy he is then expect us to believe he has anything other than money as a motive to any action is as I said the height of naievity.

  11. Paul67 et al

So Dermot Desmond speaks Corporate speak just before a Corporate event, the gowf that is. No real surprise there I suppose. I said a week or so ago that while the PLC was probably the best vehicle for Celtic back in 1994, it no longer is. Hasn’t seemed to help us when we ‘negotiate’ a broadcasting ‘deal’ has it? All that Corporate experience and all. Then again barring a restructure of the top league next season, something that Mark Warburton is advocating, there could be up to a half dozen ‘Old Firm’ games to market. BT and Sky delivering them.

  12. In my opinion DD’s comments today know on the head any notion that PL is only doing the bidding of his master.

DD cares little for Celtic and his remarks are indicative of someone who has absolutely nothing in common with ordinary Celtic supporters. All he cares about is the money and an idealistic notion of owning a football team in the EPL.

The day to day, run of the mill decisions are made by PL. He’s equally culpable but in a completely different way.

    I struggle with DD-

He’s invested far more in CELTIC than I ever will

    We’re going for 5iar

We’ve survived shi* setanta and sky TV deals

    The living wage

    Oldco had inappropriately registered players

The club’s run very well ( you might not like the way it is but it is)

    He doesn’t go to games

A fan doesn’t make a good major shareholder

We’ve had poor CL games the last couple of years

PL has a clear remit ( you might not like the remit but he has one)

There are no no exit routes from the spfl available to us.

Don’t know how to make sense of all that – can’t see a way of improving it in the current climate.

Going on about Schweinsteiger being taken off, Van Gaal obvious feeling comfortable, then when things fall apart saying why on earth take off schweinsteiger – simple really the guy was blowing out his bottom and can’t last 90mins anymore.

  16. ht,

very good observation, and well presented.

    good point.

  17. Canamalar, As I have said before I despise all the Irish Tax Exile Billionaires and I include Desmond in that. I do not want to be seen as a supporter or defender of him in any way. However I see no reason to disbelieve him when he says his prime motivation in investing in Celtic was an emotional one. Celtic have a Stock Market Valuation of circa 70 million, Desmond owns approx 35% of Shares circa 24 million, he could earn a lot more with that money invested elsewhere.

  18. We Get our Ass Handed to Us in a Big way tomorrow i think it maybe DD’s Kodak Moment…Woyld that be a Bad thing , i Dunno..

Scottish football died a few years back (w ell before the Huns died), some on here can’t see it and still think if we aren’t getting to the last 16 of the CL then we are failing. Some fans live in a dream world.

  20. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

If Sevco are in the Top Division next year, then I believe attendance figures at Celtic Park will remain pretty much as they are now. The numbers attending because Sevco are in the Division will be matched by those not going because Sevco are in the Division.

Incidentally, to tell those who won`t attend because of Sevco`s involvement not to adopt such a course of action is like telling someone with a sprained ankle not to limp.

PS One thing DD`s comments have more or less done is to unite CQN in condemnation of his outpourings.

  22. Corkcelt

I thought if you owned over 29.8% of any shares in a Co. You had to make an offer for full takeover ? Or did Dermot get a special dispensation on this when he last underwrote shares ?

  23. Corkcelt,

I doubt he’d get as good a return on the money he has put in, he got preferential treatment and price on the shares he bought and the long term strategy to get into the EPL will make him a bigger return than even the airport if it comes off so stop being so naive.
