Dermot’s return to the fray, Kodak moment

696

A Dermot Desmond interview! Remember him? It’s been a while since we’ve seen or heard from our major shareholder, so I am pleased STV got hold of him. His absence for so many years is not in itself an offence, but there has been no evidence he remains engaged with the club, and that’s not healthy.

His comments on Ronny Deila I agree with. Ronny is here because we think he can improve players and therefore improve the team. The evidence cited by Dermot Desmond (Nir Bitton, Tom Rogic), suggests he’s able to do this. There have been downsides of course. Ronny’s twice fallen in the Champions League to lesser-resourced (although decent) teams.

If we’re going to build a team we need to be patient enough to let the guy get on with the job.

The comments about a British league within 10 years are worth examining at a later date, but for brevity: this is no more than blue-sky thinking.

I agree in principle that technological changes are underway which will undermine the BSkyB business model. This model relies on the pull of English Premier League football to deliver high-value subscription rates from a huge portion of the UK population.

We talked in the summer about the switch to what the Americans call ‘cutting the cord’; moving away from expensive subscription TV to watching feeds streamed from foreign broadcasters, effectively free of charge. This is happening and its impact will only increase.

I know lots of CQNers are already consuming their English football in this manner, it works and it’s practically undetectable (i.e. it really is undetectable). But it’s not easy yet. You need to know what you are doing, and you need decent broadband. Products are improving all the time, as is broadband provision. Soon paying £100 per month for TV, as many do, will be a goodwill option.

Should there be even a modest shift in BSkyB’s ability to generate huge revenue from EPL football, the fallout in the English football bubble (it is a bubble) will be swift and structurally damaging.

Getting to the point. English football has a business model with risks which could bring it down. Technological changes are underway which undermine this model. Lots will happen in the next 10 years.

Let me share one of my favourite graphs………..

Kodak had a great marketing slogan, they called a great image a ‘Kodak moment’, when people would turn to their cameras to capture the memory on Kodak paper. The phrase was turned on its head in recent years when the realisation that Kodak’s entire business model was about to be destroyed by digital cameras.

The moment of realisation became the ultimate ‘Kodak moment’, it now meant a moment when you realise technology is about to wipe you out. Those who were saying this about Kodak 20 years ago were mocked. Some of us already think we’ve seen English football’s Kodak moment.

This is Kodak’s market capitalisation between 1989 and 2012, where was your Kodak moment?

For not having.much sleep and a bad back it sure didn’t show, well played

Fwiw, I fkn hate the thought of seeing the union jack flying high in a stand at Celtic park twice a season, playing in the English set up would finish it for me.

Spend what we can to be the best we can in our country/league does it for me.

Mr Desmond knows exactly what he’s saying/doing, the gate won’t drop sufficiently enough to cause concern, probably will increase some, full houses twice a year against them, throw in cup comps and a few games in europe..ta da!!

    Job done.

Sad days indeed… For me :(

Dermot can kiss my spotty arse

And, in the style of cowiebhoy earlier, if I wasnt heading to spain on friday I,d take my spotty arse and present it to the fud on my hallowed carnoustie turf.

Maybe my wee bro or Sipsini could stand in for me. Both have bigger and spottier arses than me.

    Couple of Q’s.

    1. In the last couple of years DD has blowen the OF trumpet at a golf day for media. Why does he not attend a single AGM and blow that trumpet to the fans/share holders he so readily has a distaste for?

    2. While you are so far up DD’s rectum give us a shout when you reach Peters ankles?

    Cheers

    MWD said AYE ;)

  4. HT,

I thought Blackett didn’t look too comfy on his debut but no-one really got me going that day.

He looked OK replacing izzy in the Arena Imo. Tough game to judge.

Looked braw at ch but I’ll be told it was only v the rovers. (best team in Fife btw;))

As I said earlier, I really wasn’t impressed with the young lad in the league cup and as a happy clapper it pains me to say that.

  7. Expecting Johansen to be back in the starting lineup tomorrow.

Hopefully missing a few games will have have done him the world of good(brought him back to earth with a thud)and he puts in the kind of performance he is capable of.

I see Kieran Tierney didn’t play tonight against Helsinki

Have to say though, thought his natural position was left half (old version:-)) and not left back ?

I saw sipsini posting about Joanna Lumley earlier. Wasnt sure if I got the point, but as a wummin she,s bound to be a dab hand wi an iron.

She could iron oot his wrinkled auld coupon nae bother.

  10. I can just picture DD playing the role of Pablo Escobar in Narcos.

He obviously thinks he can say and do whatever the feck he likes, and everyone will just accept it.

New career there as an actor…all the classic roles…..King Louis XV, Carnegie, JP Morgan, Rockefeller, Moses, Billy Liar….the list is endless.

He is sure to be brilliant as John Knox….if he can pull off the accent.

75ish is an OK tally for a 21 year old.

But….if he plays no part in the next two games my opinion can easily change :)

I suspect that if there was even a sniff of an invite to a big money league DD would take over very rapidly.

  16. Wow, just in and reading back. Assumed all the chat would be about tomorrow night. But no, our absentee landlord has delivered his annual cringefest at the Dunhill Cup. Amazing he is ever present given his repeated failure to attend our AGM.

If they ever remake Father Ted they should get this fud to play Father Dougal. He’d be a natural.

Struggling for it now though! Well player yersel tonight auld yin :-)

I guess I was just searching for an explanation.

I was taking the view that the guy is not daft and would not risk alienating many supporters without a good reason for doing it.

I may well be wrong and there may be none. Maybe he was just caught with guard down for 2nd year in a row.

Personally I struggle to find any justification for it but in my view there has to be an explanation or it really is incredibly stupid.

  19. Weeminger,

Canamalar, As I have said before I despise all the Irish Tax Exile Billionaires and I include Desmond in that. I do not want to be seen as a supporter or defender of him in any way. However I see no reason to disbelieve him when he says his prime motivation in investing in Celtic was an emotional one. Celtic have a Stock Market Valuation of circa 70 million, Desmond owns approx 35% of Shares circa 24 million, he could earn a lot more with that money invested elsewhere.

I wonder if anyone who knows about such things could tell us exactly how much DD has taken directly or indirectly out of Celtic?

Burnley78, don’t you think there’s a good possibility that he’s just so out of touch with the ordinary supporter that he’s oblivious to the alienation he’s causing?

I’ve yet to see Desmond at an AGM. I’ve missed a few over his time at CP but I don’t have access to a private jet to get me to them. He can turn up any time there’s a freebie golf game at Carnoustie or St Andrews but cant put in an appearance in front of the people who line his bank account.

BTW, how’s the distilling business going? I’d be interested in trying some of your wares.

  29. When Chals floated his new club on the stock exchange the price they got caused the Celtic shares to almost double, since then the Celtic shares have settled at the higher rate, about 73p a share now, can anyone tell me what price DD paid for his original share price investment ?

What price he paid for his increased uptake ? Yet there are people who still believe he is only in it for sentimental reasons ffs.

Very very simple maths, 32M @ 73 p what £24M original investment what £4M on ordinary shares alone and picking up dividends yet these people telling us he could have got a better turn around elsewhere 600% in 20 years no too bad really is it ?

  30. ACGR

You maybe we’ll be right re ‘out of touch’ but I am sure he would have been briefed, if not then that is really poor by the club.

I can’t help but think his comments were aimed at a wider audience to emphasise the size of the combined prize. It is obviously easier to sell that combined entity ( much as we loathe it).

As I keep saying he may have been better saying nothing but as he did speak, and say what he did, I am hoping there was a reason.

Hopefully we will have our wares at CP sometime soon. Happy to show you round our place if you are up our way anytime soon… And share a dram !
