Dermot’s return to the fray, Kodak moment

696

A Dermot Desmond interview! Remember him? It’s been a while since we’ve seen or heard from our major shareholder, so I am pleased STV got hold of him. His absence for so many years is not in itself an offence, but there has been no evidence he remains engaged with the club, and that’s not healthy.

His comments on Ronny Deila I agree with. Ronny is here because we think he can improve players and therefore improve the team. The evidence cited by Dermot Desmond (Nir Bitton, Tom Rogic), suggests he’s able to do this. There have been downsides of course. Ronny’s twice fallen in the Champions League to lesser-resourced (although decent) teams.

If we’re going to build a team we need to be patient enough to let the guy get on with the job.

The comments about a British league within 10 years are worth examining at a later date, but for brevity: this is no more than blue-sky thinking.

I agree in principle that technological changes are underway which will undermine the BSkyB business model. This model relies on the pull of English Premier League football to deliver high-value subscription rates from a huge portion of the UK population.

We talked in the summer about the switch to what the Americans call ‘cutting the cord’; moving away from expensive subscription TV to watching feeds streamed from foreign broadcasters, effectively free of charge. This is happening and its impact will only increase.

I know lots of CQNers are already consuming their English football in this manner, it works and it’s practically undetectable (i.e. it really is undetectable). But it’s not easy yet. You need to know what you are doing, and you need decent broadband. Products are improving all the time, as is broadband provision. Soon paying £100 per month for TV, as many do, will be a goodwill option.

Should there be even a modest shift in BSkyB’s ability to generate huge revenue from EPL football, the fallout in the English football bubble (it is a bubble) will be swift and structurally damaging.

Getting to the point. English football has a business model with risks which could bring it down. Technological changes are underway which undermine this model. Lots will happen in the next 10 years.

Let me share one of my favourite graphs………..

Kodak had a great marketing slogan, they called a great image a ‘Kodak moment’, when people would turn to their cameras to capture the memory on Kodak paper. The phrase was turned on its head in recent years when the realisation that Kodak’s entire business model was about to be destroyed by digital cameras.

The moment of realisation became the ultimate ‘Kodak moment’, it now meant a moment when you realise technology is about to wipe you out. Those who were saying this about Kodak 20 years ago were mocked. Some of us already think we’ve seen English football’s Kodak moment.

This is Kodak’s market capitalisation between 1989 and 2012, where was your Kodak moment?

  5. the glorious balance sheet on

If Dermot Desmond loves the EPL so much, why doesn’t he buy a controlling stake in a club like Leeds and try to get them into the premiership?

If he loves Sevco as much as his repeated unsolicited praise of them suggests, why doesn’t he buy them out from fat mike, google eyes, glibsy or whoever else owns ra deeds?

I just wish he would do one and dispose of his shares in Celtic. He uses his status as largest shareholder to de facto control the club’s strategy. This “strategy” seems to be do the bare minimum, court and take the bigot pound, and get ready to lift your skirt and wrap yourself in a Union Jack if the backside falls out of the English TV deals.

The irony is that this strategy has taken us full circle; we now have the poorest Celtic team since Desmond bought into Celtic in 1994.

He has been spouting this Colin Nish about Celtic playing in the EPL or a British league “within a few years” ever since 1995. Football has moved on over the last 20 years, if England federates with clubs from other countries it will be the big money markets of the USA and mainland Europe they look to, not Celtic and the zombie franchise in Govan that Desmond repeatedly praises.

But while others move on, Desmond refuses to do so and still clings onto his 20 year delusional dream of Celtic playing in the same league as man city arsenal etc.

We need people with constructive and viable solutions to the problems facing Celtic, not people who can only promise jam tomorrow should a fanciful dream they’ve had for 20 years come to pass.

If he can’t be bothered getting himself to an AGM – surely in this day and age he could even dial in by video conference – then he should find himself a new toy and stop suffocating the life out of Celtic.

  21. Interesting article from today’s Herald.

Thirty years of murder and violence during the Troubles has caused lasting sectarian division, hurt and hatred not only in Northern Ireland but here in Scotland too. But a series of events held on this side of the water are aiming to bring Irish Republicans and Unionists together and aid the reconciliation process.

The first meeting, which was held last week in the village of Plains, North Lanarkshire, was organised by a local Republican organisation, Cairde na hEireann (Friends of Ireland), and brought together Republicans who have spent time in prison and former British Army soldiers who have served in Northern Ireland.

Now the organisation says it intends to hold a series of similar meetings across Scotland, which could include victims of the Troubles.

The event was inspired by the Sinn Fein initiative Uncomfortable Conversations, which is aimed at promoting dialogue between the two communities.

It has included an event held in Londonderry/Derry last month attended by Sinn Fein’s national chairman Declan Kearney and Northern Ireland’s police chief George Hamilton.

Franny McAdam, national organiser of Cairde na hEireann, said: “The idea is that it is only through dialogue and talking through your experiences of what happened, then you can understand the other side’s point of view.

“The former soldiers gave their experiences of why they joined the Army and what happened in Northern Ireland, and how they felt about it.

“The Republicans talked about why they did what they did and ended up in jail – so it was a really interesting event.”

He added: “It was a ground-breaking event for Scotland – there is nothing like this which has happened before and we are planning to do a series of these events.

“It is not about sitting down and apportioning blame to anyone, it is sitting down and understanding why things happened. The sooner people do that, I think the sooner reconciliation can come about.

“Scotland is a very sectarian place as well. It is about breaking down barriers and sitting down and talking.”

One of the panel members was former soldier Tam Stewart, who was in the former Royal Scots Regiment for nine years and spent just over two years in Northern Ireland in the early 1980s. He said he had been nervous in the run-up to the event, but the meeting was “anything but uncomfortable”.

He said: “I spoke about my own experiences – I grew up in a wee village where there was no bigotry at all and we all played together as one.

“You join the army and suddenly you go to Northern Ireland and face bigotry – it was quite a shock to experience that as a young lad of 19, you don’t really understand at that stage in life what is going on.

“I think the meeting is an excellent idea and I think it is the way forward.

“The fact we could have a discussion which was anything but an ‘uncomfortable conversation’ and shake hands was really good – it is the first step on a long journey I believe.”

Another panel member was Micky Kinsella, a Republican activist from Derry who was never convicted but spent time on remand in prison accused of crimes including firearms possession.

He said he had found it interesting listening to the former soldiers and did not find the discussions “uncomfortable”, despite the title of the meeting.

He added: “I think a lot was achieved as you had the two sides there listening to each other’s sides and having a discussion in a very calm atmosphere.”

Professor Richard English of the University of St Andrews and the author of ‘Armed Struggle: The History of the IRA’ said “genuine dialogue” between the two political communities in Northern Ireland remains stalled, despite the huge advances which have been made politically.

He added: “Uncomfortable Conversations provides the foundation on which all sides can begin to build proper trust, if they choose to do so.

“Sectarianism in Scotland has generated less violence than in the different context of Northern Ireland. But because of that, it has been seen as less of a priority.

“If the model of open dialogue between communities can be borrowed from Belfast, then that would seem to me another benefit in the Uncomfortable Conversations initiative.”

  22. Corkcelt: enjoy your day. I hope I will be still able to go over at your age. Up the Rhebels!

Ronny Deila: I’ll repay “inspirational” Dermot Desmond’s faith in me by getting results

DEILA is determined to justify the Celtic owner’s unwavering belief in his management skills.

RONNY DEILA last night dubbed Dermot Desmond an inspiration and vowed to repay the unswerving faith shown in him by the Celtic supremo.

The Parkhead manager was handed a massive boost on the eve of tonight’s Europa League clash against Fenerbahce when the Hoops chief outlined his delight at the progress of the club under the Norwegian’s stewardship.

Desmond believes Deila is improving Celtic and is confident of a successful future alliance.

Celtic have twice missed out on the group stage of the Champions League since Deila’s arrival to replace Neil Lennon and currently trail Aberdeen by four points after nine matches in the Premiership.

But Desmond remains unmoved over his belief in the 40-year-old’s abilities and Deila is determined to justify it.

Dermot Desmond is a big fan of what Ronny Deila’s doing at Celtic.

He said: “It’s always very inspiring to talk to Desmond. He’s an inspiring person. He has experience and knowledge. You can feel it when he comes into a room that he knows what he’s doing and he loves what he’s doing.

“I talk with him a lot. He’s an intelligent guy who knows what he wants. I’m happy he can see that we’re doing good things here. He wants results like everyone. He understands that there’s a way to do that and that we’re progressing.

“He sees when the team is playing well or not playing well. He’s honest, he says it as it is. He understands football as well which is a positive.

“It’s always important to feel trust and it’s great to feel it from Dermot and Peter Lawwell. It gives you confidence, belief and lot of energy to work.

“He’s like every leader should be. He’s honest about what he sees and what he thinks. He asks questions about the next move and what we will do and different things.

“It’s good to get you to reflect on what you are doing. It’s a good relationship.”

Ronny Deila is happy with the reception he’s had from the bosses at Celtic Park.

Desmond spoke at St Andrews as he took part in the Dunhill Links Championship and will travel down to Glasgow for tonight’s game.

The Irish billionaire is adamant the club’s going in the right direction and explained: “We’re a better team than we were last year.

“We’ve had a few tough matches, Aberdeen did well against us and in Europe we were a bit unlucky against Malmo.

“But we’re on a learning curve and I feel our squad is much better than it was last year and we’ll continuously improve.

“Losing to Malmo was a blow to the club and supporters. Leave aside the financial elements of it, we want to be competing with the best for our fans and it’s disappointing we didn’t get through but we’ll endeavour to get there next year.

“Deila has got two trophies under his belt and we can see the good work he’s done with a lot of the players coming on.

“In the current squad, if you take Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton, they have made considerable improvement and a lot of other players have made considerable improvement under Ronny’s guidance.

“So I feel very confident that he’ll continue to improve all the teams at Celtic. I’m confident at Ronny’s future at Celtic.

“There’s a major disconnect between the finance available to teams in Scotland and the finances in the Premier League, La Liga etc.

“The club is in good financial health. What we’re trying to do is to apply intellectual capital on to financial capital and improve the performances of the team.

“I’m confident that in the future the best of Ronny Deila and the best of Celtic is to come.

“Our first challenge is to win the Premiership and get into competing in the Champions League.”

Deila revealed he wasn’t nervous talking to Desmond directly after the Malmo setback and insists he was given support.

He said: “You can never be worried but you’re very disappointed.

“The worst thing I know is to let people down. It’s the hardest thing in life.

“That’s why it’s tough to be a manager. It makes you feel like you’ve let down so many people.

“Of course Dermot is one of those people. But you have to face it. If you can’t go through the hard times you’ll never be a manager in this business.

“The most important thing is everyone is working together, in good times and bad. That has been good at Celtic since I came here.

“A good manager has a sense. If you have the time to look, then you can see an unhappy player.

“The most important thing for a manager is to see his players and I’m good at reading body language.

“If you see a player who doesn’t look you in the eye going past you, it is a cry for help. Of course it is.

“If you then go into a room and ask him what the problem is, you will get it out of him.

“Then you have to find a solution that makes him happy. Doing that means you have created energy rather than losing it.

“If you don’t care, then people will think that whatever you say will never happen.

“You lose belief in what you’re doing. You start to get groups within the group and a war going on. Then it is very tough as a leader to keep progressing the team.

“A year ago, I talked with the players. They had a lot of experience and they had to adapt to me and I had to adapt to them.

“I had to adapt to Scottish football and the Scottish culture and the way they had done things before as well.

“It had to be done in the right order but I’m patient and it’s not only that they have learned from me, I have learned a lot of things on the way, as well.

“That’s making me a better manager and them better players.”

  33. Ronnie Deila has improved players?

    Mmmmmmm.

    Let’s give him Bitton.

Far too early to say on Rogic.

But what has he done for 30 goal Kris Commons ,and 20 goal Tony Stokes?

The net result is we have lost £30 to £ 40 million on CL income since his appointment .

    Precisely.

And he has locked us in to retaining the services of Ronny for the foreseeable future.

    Irrespective of results.

    This is not good.

    Ronny had better perform………………..in fact,maybe that`s the psychology.Hopefully.

Any way you look at it,we Celtic are NOT where we should be or deserve to be.
