Dermot’s return to the fray, Kodak moment

696

A Dermot Desmond interview! Remember him? It’s been a while since we’ve seen or heard from our major shareholder, so I am pleased STV got hold of him. His absence for so many years is not in itself an offence, but there has been no evidence he remains engaged with the club, and that’s not healthy.

His comments on Ronny Deila I agree with. Ronny is here because we think he can improve players and therefore improve the team. The evidence cited by Dermot Desmond (Nir Bitton, Tom Rogic), suggests he’s able to do this. There have been downsides of course. Ronny’s twice fallen in the Champions League to lesser-resourced (although decent) teams.

If we’re going to build a team we need to be patient enough to let the guy get on with the job.

The comments about a British league within 10 years are worth examining at a later date, but for brevity: this is no more than blue-sky thinking.

I agree in principle that technological changes are underway which will undermine the BSkyB business model. This model relies on the pull of English Premier League football to deliver high-value subscription rates from a huge portion of the UK population.

We talked in the summer about the switch to what the Americans call ‘cutting the cord’; moving away from expensive subscription TV to watching feeds streamed from foreign broadcasters, effectively free of charge. This is happening and its impact will only increase.

I know lots of CQNers are already consuming their English football in this manner, it works and it’s practically undetectable (i.e. it really is undetectable). But it’s not easy yet. You need to know what you are doing, and you need decent broadband. Products are improving all the time, as is broadband provision. Soon paying £100 per month for TV, as many do, will be a goodwill option.

Should there be even a modest shift in BSkyB’s ability to generate huge revenue from EPL football, the fallout in the English football bubble (it is a bubble) will be swift and structurally damaging.

Getting to the point. English football has a business model with risks which could bring it down. Technological changes are underway which undermine this model. Lots will happen in the next 10 years.

Let me share one of my favourite graphs………..

Kodak had a great marketing slogan, they called a great image a ‘Kodak moment’, when people would turn to their cameras to capture the memory on Kodak paper. The phrase was turned on its head in recent years when the realisation that Kodak’s entire business model was about to be destroyed by digital cameras.

The moment of realisation became the ultimate ‘Kodak moment’, it now meant a moment when you realise technology is about to wipe you out. Those who were saying this about Kodak 20 years ago were mocked. Some of us already think we’ve seen English football’s Kodak moment.

This is Kodak’s market capitalisation between 1989 and 2012, where was your Kodak moment?

  1. Morning all.

Foggy start to the day. Cumbrae is still invisible in the mist.

Promise of a warm and sunny day. Lovely prospect for October. Hope it is reflected on the faces of those of us heading back from Parkhead this evening with big smiles on those faces.

The Hearts away game scheduled for Boxing Day @ 3.00pm. Will TV scheduling mean this is likely to move or has the decision already been made that it goes ahead on the date above?

    Weeminger,

When Fergus went public with his shares which was oversubscribed, he renaged on the fan ownership promise and sold DD more than originally agreed at the expense of the fans shares.

    __________________________________________________________________________

Hail Hail fella….I’ve been trying to tell fans this for years, well said.

Wiesfeld, Dempsey etc…wanted to sell their shares to Celtic supporters for ‘less’ than they had bought them for as, the ultimate plan was that, once the stadium was built / debt cleard / Celtic on a stronger footing then – Celtic Supporters would ‘own’ Celtic FC.

But, this didn’t happen and Celtic FC was left in the hands of Fergus’s shady pal….with the supporters where they’ve always been…on the outside looking in.

Fergus tried to make out that, Dempsey etc didnt have the money to invest into Celtic.

Dempsey, during the DR Jo season appeared on Scotsport with a, Bank Of Ireland statement declaring that a joint-account had been set up by, Dempsey and John Keane to invest in the club but….crucially….Fergus, renaged on his initial promise about selling the shares to the fans for less than he purchased them for and….Dempsey felt that, this was misleading the fans and he’d have no part in that.(Cue all the happy-clappers with their links to Dempsey being skint….20 years later)

The Game was over….the rebels had won….then Fergus got his hauns on the keys….the rebels were soon on the outside and, Celtic FC was in the hands of Tin-pot-Fergus-wee-man-syndrome-dictator who, had to slip out the side door that he told Tommy Burns(RIP) to exit from after he was sacked, as Wim Jansen’s men gave the Celtic supporters their 1st title in 9 years….Fergus didny even celebrate that win such was his inability to ‘get-it’ with things in the Celtic world. God, he even tried to ban the tricolour from Celtic Park saying that it was sectarian and provocative. His most embarrassing moment for me was at the 1996 home game v’s the huns when, Fergus, TB(RIP) and, Walter….stood on the centre-circle with a mike-connected to a tannoy system that sounded as though it had been purchased from poundland as, Fergus with his written script in hand, attempted to play the wee goody guy and pay respects to the Ibrox disaster victims. Fergus started to speak and, the tannoy system kept cutting out, with Fergus having to keep repeating himself…another PR-rid-kneck.

Canny be bothered thinking about all of that again….drains my energy.

Cowiebhoy….enjoy the game fella – Hail Hail.

    Bye. YNWA.

  4. I am using my brother’s front stand seat tonight (Thanks again D). He is on the Home Tickets scheme.

Can anyone tell me whether actual Tickets have been sent out (to the brother’s home address and I have to pick them up or whether I get entry on the SB card?

P.S. I really hope that DD does not show up tonight to the game. I am struggling to think of any reason, outwith a desire not to attract trouble, for him to say what he did. To avoid trouble, he could have been a lot lot less effusive

  5. Qick Ticket Question:

I’m on the Home Ticket Scheme… usually I just turn up and my season card works. But I can’t see any direct debit from Celtic for any tickets recently (apart from the Raith game).

Has everyone else had the money taken out of their account already?

  6. the long wait is over on

    Morning all,

Can someone be good enough to confirm that the season ticket / card IS the ticket for tonight for those that bought the package ie not a separate printed ticket?

    Cheers

ItaliaBhoy – I’m in the Home Ticket Scheme and the money was taken out on Sept 9th, £22. No tickets were sent out, you use your card…

  8. The only way The Great Desmondo is going to get a return on his investment is if Celtic get into the EPL.

As far as he is concerned that’s more likely to happen if it is as one half of the old firm.

That’s about the top and bottom of it.

  9. Italiabhoy

Interesting. I called Ticket Office yesterday to upgrade my sons child season ticket to an adult believing that being on the home cup scheme al my tickets would be A-OK. Turns out I had no tickets and my home cup scheme had been cancelled. Girl said the bank instruction for direct debit had been cancelled. Now legally that cannot happen unless I cancelled it which I didn’t (still to check with bank if it has been which i intend to do today). So as well as having no tickets i was told i’d have to pay 3 tickets 3 game package up front now rather than over 3 payments. So I just had to but 3 tickets for elsewhere in ground losing my 3 good seats in prawn sandwich stand as they had already been sold.

So if I were you I’d check.

  11. My friends in Celtic,

It is clear what the opinions of CQN’ers are to what DD said. The statement in the Sunday Herald spoke for me at the time, nothing has changed and the statement in the Sunday Herald is still as valid today as it was then.

However What is best for Celtic Football Club ? This is what a majority shareholder should be looking at, and I do believe he has a certain affinity with the club. I am not a complete Daftie and I know a capitalist will act like a capitalist, but all the toys lying outside the pram will change nothing.

I believe that RD should be given time. We are changing our whole physiology and mindset and this takes time. Change is nearly always resisted initially and fundamentally We are changing decades of accepted cultures.

Due to cheating our most sellable games have been taken away and genuine competition has been curtailed. Our players do not have to be so good to win domestically, and this makes European football that much more challenging.

Despite what many think our managers job is now harder.

Our goal must be to play in a bigger, better environment on a weekly basis. Our infrastructure is geared for that and maybe, just maybe Lennoxtown will finally demonstrate it’s worth.

Ultimately in the short term, The only feasible option for Scottish football is to have its best supported teams all competing against each other no matter how distasteful this is. This is basic economics.

Sometimes we have to think not what we want, not what we would like, not what is morally correct but what is best for Celtic.

    HH to all and COYBIG.

MoonbeamsWD… hmm, concerning. Have to say, I much preferred it when they sent you tickets to your house. Much simpler (though probably more expensive for the club).

  15. A group of Celtic fans are being hunted by police over offensive singing on a train after a match.

Passengers contacted British Transport Police (BTP) over the chanting on a train from Glasgow to Aberdeen on Saturday evening.

It followed Celtic’s 0-0 draw with Hearts and happened 6.41pm Glasgow Queen Street to Aberdeen service between Glasgow and Stirling.

Police said they received reports of Celtic fans chanting and singing “illicit and offensive songs” on the train and are appealing for witnesses.

They are also hunting a group of Hearts supporters who shouted, swore and used religiously offensive language on trains before the game.

The first incident happened at around 10.30am on the Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street service at Haymarket station.

Later in the day at 1.15pm, a group of around 35 of the fans boarded the Bristol Temple Meads to Glasgow Central service at Haymarket station and are reported to have been shouting, swearing and using religiously offensive language during the journey.

A spokesman said: “British Transport Police (BTP) is appealing for information after a group of Celtic supporters chanted and sang illicit and offensive songs on a train travelling between Glasgow and Stirling, following the team’s SPFL match against Hearts on Saturday.

“They were travelling on the 6.41pm Glasgow Queen Street to Aberdeen service when other passengers complained to rail staff and BTP.”

Good objectionable journalism! an unusual commodity in Scotland, good to see this kind of honest work by the scribes. I was sure when I read this story that there would be other supporters involved in travelling anti social behaviour and sure as he’ll they found another club’s supporters.

Wonder what the statistics are for all clubs supporters travelling around Scotland… Probably be some much worse than others…

I hear what you are saying about the best teams playing against each other BUT it’s difficult when you know that you are not playing on a level playing field and at least one of the teams that you are playing against (in a previous incarnation) refuse to accept that they did anything wrong.

Throw into that mix biased officials and a Governing body that is corrupt and not fit for purpose. …well you get the gist.

  17. ernie lynch on 1st October 2015 8:53 am

As I said on a couple of times yesterday caveat everything he says with respect to the bottom line. He’s not a Celtic fan. He’s a business person with an affection for the club that saw. and perhaps still sees, an opportunity to make money.

I’m now going to spin the life out of his quotes.

“We’ve missed them over the last few season,” he said. “But I must say Aberdeen have built a quality squad, as have Hearts.” – “them” old Rangers. From a financial point of view (the only one he cares about) this is probably true.

“I think it’s good for Scottish football to have clubs of the size of Celtic and Rangers playing each other.” This I’m afraid is probably correct. Nationally and internationally the old Glasgow derbies were the only games that really generated interest. If RIFC survive and get promoted then that interest will be renewed. Given that the majority of casual observers in this country don’t care about the old/new club debate, it’ll be even less relevant in other markets.

I think it’s interesting that he doesn’t actually state that he’d like them ‘back’, which I’m sure is the language he used previously (although I haven’t checked). I think it can be inferred and he probably does mean it but it’s interesting that he doesn’t actually state it. Maybe he’s learned.

He could quite easily, if challenged, say that he was talking about the old and new Rangers. Of course that challenge will never come. I’m sure he doesn’t see a difference but the ambiguity is there.

Thinking out loud here but does the personal opinion of the major shareholder automatically become a ‘club opinion’? I’m not sure it does. It certainly will inform some of his desires for the club but I get the feeling his involvement will be minimal until such time as we’re away from collective media bargaining.

    Anyway I’ve rambled a bit.

I see your lying about how our club was formed and why it was formed, it was not formed as a business it was 9 years after the club was formed people like yourself decided there was money to be made and manipulated their way into positions of power to facilitate their takeover. CFC was not incorporated into a business until 1897.

Typically your lies are deliberately and with malice spouted to help you make false claims but the. No one knows that better than you eh.

  29. Morning all

Sorry if I appear a touch gloomy but family news I got yesterday whilst neither especially bad nor unexpected was nevertheless a reminder of how I wish some things were different to how they are.

I did not hear Wor Dermot’s interview so I cannot comment as to whether his remarks regarding Rangers were prompted by the interviewer or volunteered by the man himself. As reported here I cannot say they are remotely to my taste but I will give him the benefit of the doubt by saying if they were prompted by a local interviewer who is incapable of seeing ‘Celtic’ without immediately thinking ‘Rangers’ ( the reverse process does not hold for these people I find) then he thought he was being diplomatic. His comments about Celtic joining the EPL though are just rubbish. It will never happen and nor will an Atlantic League or whatever other ideas that have been floated into the Blue Sky ever come to pass. No other league wants us to join now. Very possibly never have and probably never will.

Picked up on some critique of Lennoxtown and wonder if people are criticising the right thing. Leaving aside that we do seem to get a lot more players injured in training than was the case in the old Barrowfield/Seamill days it is surely a good thing to have a facility that is modern and ‘state-of-the-art’? That we do not produce significant numbers of young players who settle into our first team as we did until the early 1980s is not the fault of the facility but the people employed at that facility. It seems to me that we have a system in place that produces some very good (and not so good) teams at the various non first team level but which are not part of a joined up ‘whole’ – these teams increasingly seem to exist to win honours at the level they play at not to produce players for the first team. I am saddened when I see so many of these youngsters farmed out by Ronny D (and before him by NFL) and almost ‘know ‘ that these lads will never make it if and when they come back to us. I wonder if , for example, Eoghan O’Connell is any worse than Dedryk Boyata but wonder also whether Ronny or his predecessor have/had any real faith in the system we have in place.

As we are de facto going down the route of mainland European clubs in which the first team coach is just that and signings are the provenance of others we should surely have a proper General Manager with some obvious football pedigree who is establishing and coordinating the football side of the club from top to bottom. This GM should not be as , seems in reality to be the case at present, Peter Lawwell. I say this not because of any dislike or otherwise for PL but simply because in football terms he is not much more than a glorified if highly paid fan.

Celtic has as a club and team always have pressures on it to succeed but in the last three and a half years we were gifted an opportunity that we could have barely even have prayed for and in that time should have put in place a system that almost guarantees a continual success because that system really does develop young talent into the finished article- and as we got the off-stage set up right we would, in the absence of a credible challenger, kept winning the league ( as we of course have ). Instead in the next year or so what passed for ‘normal service’ will be back and we will be worse than we were in early 2012 because we continue to have an inappropriate set up at U-21/youth/boys level.

As I say sorry for the melancholy tone but although I am sure we will continue to muddle through and have the odd glory night in Europe ( hopefully starting tonight) I feel it could all have been so much better than it is,
