Dermot’s return to the fray, Kodak moment

696

A Dermot Desmond interview! Remember him? It’s been a while since we’ve seen or heard from our major shareholder, so I am pleased STV got hold of him. His absence for so many years is not in itself an offence, but there has been no evidence he remains engaged with the club, and that’s not healthy.

His comments on Ronny Deila I agree with. Ronny is here because we think he can improve players and therefore improve the team. The evidence cited by Dermot Desmond (Nir Bitton, Tom Rogic), suggests he’s able to do this. There have been downsides of course. Ronny’s twice fallen in the Champions League to lesser-resourced (although decent) teams.

If we’re going to build a team we need to be patient enough to let the guy get on with the job.

The comments about a British league within 10 years are worth examining at a later date, but for brevity: this is no more than blue-sky thinking.

I agree in principle that technological changes are underway which will undermine the BSkyB business model. This model relies on the pull of English Premier League football to deliver high-value subscription rates from a huge portion of the UK population.

We talked in the summer about the switch to what the Americans call ‘cutting the cord’; moving away from expensive subscription TV to watching feeds streamed from foreign broadcasters, effectively free of charge. This is happening and its impact will only increase.

I know lots of CQNers are already consuming their English football in this manner, it works and it’s practically undetectable (i.e. it really is undetectable). But it’s not easy yet. You need to know what you are doing, and you need decent broadband. Products are improving all the time, as is broadband provision. Soon paying £100 per month for TV, as many do, will be a goodwill option.

Should there be even a modest shift in BSkyB’s ability to generate huge revenue from EPL football, the fallout in the English football bubble (it is a bubble) will be swift and structurally damaging.

Getting to the point. English football has a business model with risks which could bring it down. Technological changes are underway which undermine this model. Lots will happen in the next 10 years.

Let me share one of my favourite graphs………..

Kodak had a great marketing slogan, they called a great image a ‘Kodak moment’, when people would turn to their cameras to capture the memory on Kodak paper. The phrase was turned on its head in recent years when the realisation that Kodak’s entire business model was about to be destroyed by digital cameras.

The moment of realisation became the ultimate ‘Kodak moment’, it now meant a moment when you realise technology is about to wipe you out. Those who were saying this about Kodak 20 years ago were mocked. Some of us already think we’ve seen English football’s Kodak moment.

This is Kodak’s market capitalisation between 1989 and 2012, where was your Kodak moment?

Hate is a bit strong isn’t it?

    Opposition to…yes….Hatred,..no

    Like I said….yours and DD’s views….are in the minority.

He has quite rightly been condemned for lying about the Huns.

    He should tell the truth.

I could never change your mind about anything…I wouldn’t even try.

But….you do realise, that DD will get stick for backing the cheats and bigots up….quite rightly.

Promotion of bigotry for money…..the old firm agenda.

    That is shameful.

We don’t need cheats and bigots in football…..backing them up….doesn’t help Celtic.

  3. The Green Man stand up for your own opinions, no need to speak for the vast majority, they have their own voice.

Not even sure what my own opinion on DD is. Can’t think of anything off the top of my head that makes me think of him as a Celtic man , especially when he introduced prawn Sammies and Roy Kean into a retirement gig however he owns a fair chunk of paradise.

It’s like not liking the pope and no longer being a catholic. Not a lot anyone here can do to change who owns the shares in the club other than to buy them off the owners. Choosing to go to a game or not is entirely a personal choice as quite a few regulars here will confirm. Myself wish I could get to more live games against any opposition in any competition or friendly. Easy me. Hail hail mon the champions intae them Turks. Celtic 2 – fenerbache 0 .

I think if you scroll back…the vast majority of posters have condemned DD for his lies.

And he should be….for misrepresenting Celtic.

The idiot basically compared the Celtic support to Huns.

    Now….tell me that’s ok.

Did DD say that having RIFC in the same league as us helped us? He said it was good for Scottish football. When he speaks of ‘Scottish football’ he means the SPFL and the SFA. Not the fans.

Remember I’ve advocated treating everything he says in terms of business because I don’t think he speaks as a fan, or for fans. He has no real understanding of them.

Will interest in Scottish football be greater with RIFC in the same league as us or not? Will that increased interest generate more revenue for Celtic?

He just doesn’t consider the questions in the same way as you or I would.

  8. GREENPINTA

How many Celtic fans hold the views of DD ?

He should be exposing the cheating and bigotry not backing them up.

To accord them an unwarranted gravitas is nonsense.

They are cheats and bigots…..always have been, and nothing will change that.

  9. Is it really necessary to speak about Dermot Desmond in such vile tones?

He may not be every bodies cup of tea ,but please show some good manners.

I admire anyone who can build such a business.

I do however realise that there has to be a ruthless streak to get there ,and for many ,that is unpalatable .

Some don’t want to be compared to Huns ,yet they use language and personal attacks that I would equate with Hunnish behaviour.

    Catch on to yourselves.

  10. The Green Man

What DD sais to the media you can read and like it or dislike it, what he thinks about the Huns? you will never know, only he knows that, he answers questions from the media and tells them what they want to hear.

Now his thoughts on on the cheating, lying, bent corrupt toxic mob over at Narnia, well, only he knows that, he just won’t give them the oxygen they are craving for, he’s not daft, you think that? That’s why he’s a billionaire.

  11. The Green Man I never want to see us playing any reincarnation of the old rangers. Like I said DD’s opinion is not something that really has any interest for me but he is perfectly able to have that opinion. I don’t need a vast majority to back me up or to look for a minority opinion and grandstand on it. Never really seen TD67 havin any Hun love ins so not really sure what the problem is.

Nice chatting anyway mate have a good one, off to my scratcher , another days work before the weekend and hopefully wake up to a Celtic win.

  12. Oldtim,

  14. DD became all powerful and, domineering…after MO’N left the club.

DD tried to interfere with MO’N’s running of the football team when, Sutton was about to be signed for £6 million having scored only one goal the previous season.

DD asked MO’N if he was sure about this move?…..MO’N told him – “I’m the football manager if you don’t mind.”

Now, DD was hardly ever seen during MO’N’s tenure at the club.

Compare that to, his appearances during the PL-puppet-manager-years.

    BTM

    NFL

    RD.

Celtic FC is a rudderless ship….a club on the verge of freefall….imho.

Some supporters dont actually get that, their paying their hard earned money to a bunch of men…one man in particular who would….give their addresses to the police….kowtow to any SMSM-driven agenda to smeer or, worse on Celtic fans…the Fir Park / Dens Park aftermath for example.

You see, these custodians of your club look upon you as, nothing more than a cash-cow waiting to be milked.

They’ll take your money with one hand and…throw you to the dogs of the establishment without so much as a blink from their snake-eyes, with the other.

It seems that there are countless thousands of Celtic supporters out there who could be in for one almighty shock when, the cheating-bigoted-racist-evil-filled-hun-animals return to CP next season.

What will DD have to say when, RD is wathing his side being mibberied out of trophy, after trophy all too appease the huns who think their coming back for vengeance for the way that they’ve been treated.

Fact is….the huns should still be banned from all levels of football whilst under investigation.

But, that would only happen if….Celtic were run by – Celtic supporters.

Would the Kelly’s & White’s have looked the other way when, the huns were stealing all the CL-money to stay alive…on the back of honest mistakes?

Sadly, it looks like the biggest mugs in world football are the supporters of…Celtic FC.

You do eff-all but turn up and ask for more…..ye couldny make it up.

Enjoy being the hun bitches forevermore.

  15. It’s a fair point and one worth remembering that the views expressed on a Celtic blog, even by the majority, do not necessarily represent the views of Celtic fans as a whole. It may be an indication but who knows for sure?

  16. TD67

How many Celtic fans will be hurt next season when the bigots are back?

How many stabbings do it take, for the penny to drop.

This is what im concerned with.

What about all the kids who watch Celtic….Do they deserve to be abused by bigots at Celtic Park?

Their bigotry should be confronted….not encouraged.

I don’t care if I ever see them again (Huns)

But as I said if and when they come back, it will have nothing to do with DD either.

  19. The Green Man on 1st October 2015 11:26 am

The club can’t confront it though until it affects the club. I’m not confident the club will should it arise. However I’m fairly clear that we shouldn’t be commenting on them while they’re not in the same division. Right now it’s up to teams they’re actually playing against to to do that.

  20. Love reading the comments about GASL having such deep, deep pockets.

What a pity he has such short, short arms.

  21. TD67

Fair enough T….but you will concede that Celtic fans WILL be targeted by these bigots.

Ive saw it with my own eyes…..and have had to physically/mentally defend myself against a Hun mob..it was not nice.

As for Police Scotland…..they aren’t exactly helpful to Celtic fans.

Community harmony. How do we achieve this?

The best example I can think of was mining communities during the miners strike and football teams had virtually no relevance.

    =========================================================================

    Well.

You wish to go off on a tangent, jump on your favourite hobby horse and ignore the current state of affairs.

    O.K.

The mining unions crapped on the rest of community. They didn`t give a damn about the old,the infirm, or societies losers who relied on coal to warm their houses.

    Nah.

The N.U.M. run by the obnoxious Scargill were interested in their own paypackets.

Scargill was interested in political power.

Scargill, last seen suing the N.U.M.in court over his personal financial interests.

Nothing sadder than poorer communities brainwashed into supporting those who left them without the coal they needed to warm their houses.

Scargill.Yeah, He`s the man.He didn`t give a damn about the pain HIS strike inflicted on the poor.

He had more important fish to fry.

    His personal interests.

  26. The Clumpany, nice one.

    Good Morning.

In the normal course of events most football matches are largely forgotten after a week. You will probably remember the result and any particular striking incidents, but otherwise the game will fade into the recesses of the memory and be filed alongside thousands of others.

Of course, some results will stay at the forefront of your mind for a bit longer, even if the game wasn’t all that significant in the grand scheme of things. You would, for example, have to have a will of iron not to find a measure of continuing mirth in the on-pitch calamities which have befallen baselessly-swaggering tribute act Sevco FC since its creation in 2012.

So their thumping defeat to St Johnstone last week following a series of media drool-inducing wins against lower-league opposition, was always likely to make us laugh for a little bit longer than other recent results in Scotland.

But the chances are that even the more ‘interested’ observers of Sevco would ordinarily have ‘moved on’ by now. [No, really. After all, we aren’t exactly short of Sevcomedy to guffaw at, are we?]

However, we have not been allowed to move on. And that is entirely because everyone at Sevco (with the possible exception of Baron Bouffant) has been having an extraordinarily difficult time dealing with the defeat.

    A REALLY seriously hard time.

And – typically unable to deal with the prospect of appearing somewhat less-than ‘all-conquering’ to those who should ‘fear’ them – they have chosen to work through their grief in public. Via the medium of journalists who are well-schooled in regurgitating any old Sevco crap.

And so it is that we have had the following comments and excuses over the past week.

The Warbmeister suggesting St Johnstone had more “random luck” during the game.

Warbo repeatedly stating that the gap between the top two tiers of Scottish football isn’t that great despite being his team being pumped by St Johnstone.

David Weir claiming that Sevco’s League Cup exit might actually be a “good thing”.

His Needy Warbliness insisting that his side deserved more respect from the media following their good start to the lower-league season.

Barkin’ Foghorn also stating that the gap between the Premiership and Championship isn’t that great, and talking up the prospects of Sevco challenging for the top-tier title next season, and qualifying for the Champions League.

And as if all that wasn’t enough, today we have Sevco captain Lee Wallace talking about last week’s defeat being a “freak result”, and referring to “disrespect”.

Lee Wallace: Rangers have got ‘freak’ St Johnstone result out of their system after Morton win

    Take it away Lee…

“It was a freak result, the way we look at it. It is one we analysed the day after and we quickly learned from.

“That is the difference now, we are looking to try and dissect these instances and it is a new experience for the squad, and a young squad that are having to deal with defeat, deal with criticism, and disrespect.”

They really are struggling to cope aren’t they? Heaven forbid Sevco and the King Warbolution should encounter any further obstacles on the road to universal domination otherwise I do believe there could be actual tears before bedtime.

    Chin-up everyone!

And remember: if you stop bleating in public, we might stop laughing at you.

    For a while…

DD’s comments are becoming a yearly / bi-yearly source of major disagreement between Celtic supporters. I’ve no doubt there are Celtic supporters who can’t wait for the huns to get into the same league as us, my own opinion is we will see these guys back next season. Again, my opinion is that the support who have been going to the games without the huns in the league are happy not to have them in the same league.

When I speak to guys I know who no longer go to the games and were season ticket holders, they don’t believe me when I say I don’t want them back. They can’t wait to play them again…it takes all sorts to make up our support…
