Despite success, current European levels are not stable for Celtic

567

In 11 days we will know our potential opponents for the first and second Champions League qualification rounds.  While earning the money available for Champions League qualification is the overriding priority, we also need Uefa coefficient points.

Should they progress, Celtic will be seeded for each of the four qualifying rounds, but they are in position to be bottom of the seed: five points below second bottom PSV Eindhoven, and four above unseeded APOEL Nicosia.

Our place in fourth spot in future years depends on who else qualifies and how successfully we replenish our stock of coefficient points.  We earned eight points from our Champions League/Europa League endeavours last season, with a six point season due to drop off next year.

Eight points from one season is a baseline for teams who wish to be seeded in the champions route, but it is difficult to imagine even a modest improvement without a significant pick-up in performances.  Chances of us winning two or more games in the group stage feel no more likely than the chances of us winning none, or of finishing bottom of the group stage – equal to our seeding.

The dirty wee secret of European football progress should be acknowledged.  Teams from small nations find it nearly impossible to progress through the group stage every year, much like on the international stage when betting on the World Cup, but those who manage to get there more seasons than not, tend to have financially difficult season, where they fail to qualify for the Champions League, but earn a significant haul of points in the Europa League, making subsequent campaigns a little easier.

Despite the general invincibility of the team domestically, I suspect the current levels of achievement in Europe are not stable.  We will have to improve, or there will be a season of retrenchment.

  4. AULDHEID @ 9:34 PM,

Well having re-read the Sevco Rangers statement I can see where you are coming from.

It certainly seems to contradict the initial statement by the SFA (believe it was in a letter issued to all the Clubs) that the Tax was admitted in the Craig Whyte trial as being overdue in early 2011.

If we are to believe Sevco, the investigation into the Rangers 2011/12 UEFA Licence “submission” was dropped and a new Notice of Complaint into the subsequent monitoring period was made.

Well, in light of that Ramsay Smith e-mail with the rather menacing undertones, that’s very interesting.

Now of course often when we hear a Sevco statement, we know the context and content and see it as guff and bluster. We are of course blind to this content and so maybe put more gravitas to it.

Still, what you intimate maybe right, the SFA make a draft complaint that Sevco get sight of, Sevco explain in no unsubtle way there will be ramifications for the SFA… the SFA Compliance Officer backs off.

It could also mean that even though the submission is incomplete or less than accurate, no disciplinary code was sufgiciently breached. So rather than brow beat a contentious issue. The SFA look towards the “spirit” and to see if Rangers acted in utmost good faith…

I remain of the opinion that the SFA would not have touched this with a barge pole if it hadn’t been for you ghuys raising the profile with Celtic and UEFA.

Although I’m Working on instinct here, I truly believe that pressure from UEFA brought these Notices of Complaint to bear. If Rangers managed to wriggle out of putting in an inaccurate submission (either due or not to SFA conniving and maybe the ramifications of fraud that the authorities don’t want to touch). Then maybe the SFA have felt the need ensure some level of charge was brought.

As you say, the fact that Sevco are calling immunity on this one suggests that, as the 5 way agreement states, it was during Craig Whyte’ s tenure.

It will be a sad day indeed, if the SFA have watered down or negated their responsibilities because of fear and disfavour.

    Hail Hail

  15. Bit of an electric storm this morning,so just taking in the news.Great delight at the gullible monkeys being ripped off once more. That’s the Engine Room Subsidiary,in hock to the tune of 3 million, plus interest, and now the Dumb and dumbest,in hock to the tune of 2 million. And KEV says the Celtic fans are not “Cute enough”.I see he has not mentioned it for a few days, but maybe it’s dawned on him,it was only the Huns who were paying 49 quid to visit Celtic Park, for the Pumpfests. Then again, maybe not.

We need to get whatever new players in quickly for start of training.Looking for a “If Carlsberg did Fridays” this week.

    I predict:

    a) Edouard will sign;

    b) Quif (SA) will leave.

I am more confident of a) than b).

  17. Good morning all. Hope the Hootenanniers are all recovering. Was ragged yesterday after arriving home at 3am and then had to prepare for our first ever street party.

Thanks to BMCUWP for organizing the hoot. Great to visit the Short Strand for the first time, lovely weather all day, the very informative walking tour, the refreshments and grub in the Felons (thanks G98) and then there were the (more than a few) beers with old and new friends.

Hope I can make the next one.

  18. Really would like to see Armstrong signing.Himself,Sinclair and KT,made a helluva attacking threat up that left side.Noticeable how Scott’s game dropped of when Armstrong got injured.A lot of their interplay was terrific.Seemed to be on the same wavelength. When fit and playing, not many better.Would be a travesty to sell him for the fee mentioned, but if he really wants to go,noT much we can do.Hope its not just the money we are offering.

  19. Turkeybhoy at 10.10

On a point of order, Sir! Some of us season ticket holders also pay for the home games vs Them. My ST is restricted because the quarantine zone between the good guys and the zombie support has to be so wide. The consolation for me is that my seat is in the zone, not occupied by one from the dark side.

So, I do have to pay and I think it was £49. And I’m happy to confirm that when the fourth goal went in, £49 felt cheap and when the fifth went in, I wasn’t caring how much it cost.

I also have to relocate for Champions League nights, but only by about three seats, to accommodate the camera rig. The cameraman, same guy every game, is a real nice guy and we get to see immediate replays :-)

  20. ONEMALLOY, you’re making me jealous…

Thinking about it for ages,I now think Mc Gunn, bloody tablet, would be a good signing for us.Perfectly suited to the rigours of an SPL season, and could improve further under Brendan, and BROONY.If Armstrong goes,I would have him in.Certainly would not make us any weaker.I think, one to have in the trenches with you.

  22. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Just watched short highlights of The night we beat Manure 1-0 in 2006 (where oh where does the time go). Some talk on here recently about whether or not, one or two quality signings, would have much impact on our chances in the Champions League qualifiers. Well watch this short clip, and then imagine that tie without the contributions of Messrs Boruc and Nakamura.

Warning. This clip includes scenes from the very beginning, that some viewers may find orgasmic.

  23. Field Of Drams,

I realise that a few have to pay this, but the way KEV batters on about it,its everyone. The vast majority paying it are the Huns.I agree. To watch 5 goal victories against that mob,I am sure the price is well worth it.

  24. Turkeybhoy,

Your comment about SA, KT and SS disnae make a lot of sense.

Scott had a poor Season, that showed by the way he was utilised in important games.

Stuart shouldn’t have signed a 1 year extension. Celtic have done all they can.

    Kieran Tierney is HUNGRY.

The interplay – cannae think of too much between those 3. No doubt there is a cracking combo there that makes you say it.

  25. Peter,

That should be a C.All about opinions, but I think there I a connection between Armstrong not playing, and Sinkys loss of form.
