In 11 days we will know our potential opponents for the first and second Champions League qualification rounds. While earning the money available for Champions League qualification is the overriding priority, we also need Uefa coefficient points.
Should they progress, Celtic will be seeded for each of the four qualifying rounds, but they are in position to be bottom of the seed: five points below second bottom PSV Eindhoven, and four above unseeded APOEL Nicosia.
Our place in fourth spot in future years depends on who else qualifies and how successfully we replenish our stock of coefficient points. We earned eight points from our Champions League/Europa League endeavours last season, with a six point season due to drop off next year.
Eight points from one season is a baseline for teams who wish to be seeded in the champions route, but it is difficult to imagine even a modest improvement without a significant pick-up in performances. Chances of us winning two or more games in the group stage feel no more likely than the chances of us winning none, or of finishing bottom of the group stage – equal to our seeding.
The dirty wee secret of European football progress should be acknowledged. Teams from small nations find it nearly impossible to progress through the group stage every year, much like on the international stage when betting on the World Cup, but those who manage to get there more seasons than not, tend to have financially difficult season, where they fail to qualify for the Champions League, but earn a significant haul of points in the Europa League, making subsequent campaigns a little easier.
Despite the general invincibility of the team domestically, I suspect the current levels of achievement in Europe are not stable. We will have to improve, or there will be a season of retrenchment.

Craig Levein is the only manager in the SPFL Premiership to have never won a league or cup as a player or manager EVER.
BT Sport are set to air a special one off documentary about Celtic’s seven in a row run and their quest to make ten in a row.
The documentary will air on Saturday night on BT Sport one at 6pm and will include in-depth interviews with Brendan Rodgers, Ronny Deila and Neil Lennon – the three men responsible for Celtic being at this point.
The show gets set to celebrate what and incredible run the hoops have been on and will look at the most significant games it took to make it to seventh heaven.
It’s a must watch for all Celtic supporters.

Was at ‘Off The Ball’ (Today FM radio sports talk show) in Vicar Street last night. It featured Kevin Moran, Ronny Whelan and Ray Houghton who reminisced about Ireland’s participation in Euro ’88.
Next up was Johnny Giles who spoke about his life as a soccer pundit. He was asked about Leeds loss to us in the EC semifinals and he acknowledged that we were deserved winners over the two legs.
Next session saw Jackie McNamara and Alan Thompson speak about the road to Seville. The best and funniest part of this section was their story about Bobo Balde. Let’s just say that it wasn’t opposition players alone who feared Bobo. He was just as fearsome in the dressing room as he was in our defence.
Last section dealt with the panelists’ predictions for this years’ World Cup. Spain were the unanimous choice.
First time I’d been to such a show but was very enjoyable.

Perhaps we could produce a profit and loss account for all our potential opponents in the qualifiers. From that list we could decide who we should be beating. If not on the football pitch perhaps we could claim victory on the balance sheet? Maybe we could enter another competition where goals scored are replaced by accounts receivable?
