Developing an athlete

151

The life of a professional athlete varies enormously depending on what sport you participate in.  Swimmers and runners train every day in life, with the exception of rest days immediately before an event.  Footballers have rest days every week and for over a century rested for several weeks each summer.

Rest is an important part of any physical activity but I’ve never been convinced by the need for footballers to allow their fitness levels to drop so dramatically during the summer.  This is a different question from taking a break from injury-stressing contact activities – like playing football.  The summer weeks should provide a break from playing the game but presents a unique opportunity in the calendar to put intense work into other areas of fitness or physical development, without the need for travel or games.

As such, I’m glad Celtic are back at Lennoxtown, and that they have Champions League qualifiers in the middle of July.  Unlike the Barcelona players currently in Brazil with Spain, and who get one summer in four off, Celtic players have had the opportunity to rest any strains, and reinvigorate appetites ahead of the new campaign.

Have you registered for 1254125 yet?  Tom Conniffe has.  He is walking the Leeds-Liverpool Canal in five days, which measures in a tad over 125 miles, all for the campaign.  It is this simple to participate; find something you can do, register online and get goingYou can support Tom here.

Last call for tonight’s special Lions Roar event.  Watch the 1967 European Cup final on big screens in the Kerrydale Suite followed by a Q&A with the men who made history (including Willie Wallace, Heart of a Lion available below).  See you there.

My mate,a fellow Scot, and I were seconded into the RAF one night to give the top Paras a darn good hiding at the bevvying-RAF types had tried all week and been found wanting.

Reminds me of a lunchtime five-a-side league at the base in the 70’s. Games were played in an aircraft hanger with no sidelines other than the walls. Tackles were tough and football was secondary. I set up a team of civvies called Suicide with a core of three Celtic supporting Scots and became the first non-military team to win the league. Hardest games were against the Royal Marines but we matched them in brain and brawn giving them a doing every time

  5. Got to admit I usd to arrange first dates in George Square. Would sit in bar overlooking the square and if I did not fancy what I saw would not show my face.

I am sure we have all asked for a date when we were drunk.

Now Morag. Time for a pint and a exit out the back door.

  8. Just in from Golf, as pleasant a day weather wise as you could imagine. However learned that one of my golfing mates, who has been receiving treatment from cancer was told last Tues evening that he had lost the fight and it was curtains for him. He still got up Wed. morning and went out and played in our weekly Seniors Competition and whilst he didn’t figure in the prizes he played bloody well. Great guy, big big man and an extremely good hurler in his time. I’m gutted but thats life, its happening everywhere, everyday.

  18. Tennis/Football debate:

Both are quite stop start sports with dynamic movement. In football there is a lot more running in a shorter space of time (so perhaps less stop and more start) but the difference is tennis players don’t really ever get a break unless injured.

Can’t speak for tennis players and it always seems like they train really hard but footballers actually don’t seem to do huge amounts of work midweek. Nothing extreme anyway.

Almost. Was warned before one game in a tournament that I would be taken out by a certain player.

So I waited and when he came in I let him tackle then I fell over, grabbed his head in flaling pose and banged his head on the ground. We won.

  22. Well, got the new top today over here in Turkey.Perfect replica,£12.Could not believe they would have it so quick, usually August before they get them in.Really looks better than the pics.

All the write ups from Holland have nothing but great things to say about our new signing.I think I will take their word for it going by their past history. They know a player when they see one.Edson Brafheid being the exception to the rule.If Balde cuts the mustard,we are off to a flyer.Playmaker would be a wee bonus.Well back to my terrace,a cheeky G&T awaits, temperature starting to drop to about 80.Cheers.
