Developing Lagerbielke

145

Gustaf Lagerbielke was playing first team football in the Swedish Allsvenskan, a stronger league than the Scottish Premiership, when he moved to Celtic just over a year ago.  He soon played a crucial role in an early season win at Ibrox which proved to be so pivotal later in the campaign.  He also pitched in with the winner in our first home Champions League victory in a decade.

Now 24, is he is on loan at Dutch side Twente. It’s difficult to muster a firm view one way or the other on Gus.  His appearances were few and far between, and often on the most demanding occasions.  Five of his seven league appearances resulted in clean sheets.  His winning goal against Feyenoord offset two yellow cards in the earlier game in Rotterdam.

Signings don’t all work but for someone as young as Gus, they should result in a player continuing to develop.  If new arrivals are not playing regularly for Celtic, we need to find them football elsewhere.  A loan with option to buy at Oostende was enough to convince Philippe Clement’s Brugge to pay £4m for Jack Hendry just two months after the player officially left Celtic.  That loan was good for the player and good for Celtic.  Brugge even made a profit on the player when he left for Saudi last summer, although things didn’t work out at Brugge.

“But he is not yet match fit, how could he be, ”

    —————————

Perhaps by dint of having completed an uninjured pre season for Norwich.

Then being selected to play in their opening competitive game.

Being signed by Celtic and thrown straight into a game just after he arrived.

And finally by appearing for significant game time in 6 matches in the last 4 weeks including the last ROI match.

We are excusing some fairly indifferent form from Adam and imagining there are fitness issues (match or otherwise).

The boy is being played. He has not hit his stride yet but he had games and spells like this last season after he arrived in January. It was not one long list of match wining play and performances. Like everyone else he has good and bad form. Adam will come good; last year we needed him when our fancy footwork/constant movement style did not break down stubborn defences. We use Adam as someone who could make the ball stick and allow midfielders and wingers to play off him and we used Adam as a battering ram for CBs who do not get this treatment from Kyogo.

Adam is valuable to us, precisely because he is not Kyogo and never will be. But if he’s not match fit by now- questions would have to be asked about the abilities of both the Norwich and Celtic and Irish coaching staff who selected him to playing these past 6 matches. Were they all wrong and those of us just watching him play (admittedly to no great effect) able to spot a “match fitness” issue that they couldn’t, having had the benefit of watching him train and play practice games?

Adam will come good and will help us but…… though Kyogo’s price was much less expensive than Adam’s, he is clearly the number one striker….. until Adam hits better form.

“if he’s not match fit by now- questions would have to be asked about the abilities of both the Norwich and Celtic and Irish coaching staff who selected him to playing these past 6 matches”

I think there is perhaps a difference in the use of “match fit” here. I also think teams had reasons to select him to play regardless of being fully up to speed (putting him in the shop window, getting him back into the team, lack of options? respectively).

He is match fit in that he is fit enough to start a match.

He is not at peak match fitness in that his touch looks a little off at times and he is not in his best form – some players seem to take a run of games to get “match fit” whereas others slot back in like they were never away.

As you say he was patchy last season which is why some (me included) think we overpaid for him; Miovski would perhaps have been better value BUT he will no doubt do a job for us this season as he did last not only when on the pitch but in providing the competition for Kyogo.

“No harm to Cameron’s international aspirations, but hopefully, ‘Poch’ continues to overlook our defensive MVP.”

    ———-

Don’t see the logic in that one, Paul. Surely if he continues to be overlooked he would be more likely to want to move somewhere else where he might get more of a chance?

  4. bournesouprecipe on

Agent guidance will always conflict with Celtic when clubs like Watford can offer more wages. The agent wants his cut, and advises accordingly. Vata could have gone on loan in Scotland ( St Johnstone, I believe ) he didn’t ,he wanted more money and would have been third choice with little game time in prospect. No first team wages, so off they go, somebody will find a way to criticise Celtic on most topics.

“For this initiative to be successful, we need you – our dedicated fans – to turn out in force.”

    Won’t last long then :)

They struggled to fill stands when they were a double cup winning team; what chance now playing under Craig 6-4-0 Levein?

They also strangely let you sit in with the home fans in your hoops. Or they did let me, my son and his pal in back at the Dembele hat-trick 5-2 game.

  6. As you say there are many reasons but 3 different managers picked him Brendan and the Icelandic guy played him as a starter and only took him off late in the game. The Norwich manager selected him on the bench and brought him on when they went behind. In that first competitive outing, Norwich fans praised Adam as their best forward contributor. That, is in the game where you would expect match fitness issues to be the greatest yet it was his best performance out of the 6 games he played.

I’m not sure Adam’s first touch is gonna improve by much and he’ll have other poor games but he’ll also have other game winning outings for us. The Irish fans might not be happy to see him start, mind, after his last outing.

So you know all these facts ?

As reported on sky sports news.

Where did I mention Sky Sports News?

  8. Gus got send off for two yellows in Holland. The first yellow is why he’s no longer at Celtic. He pulled back an opponent close to the half way line because he was done for pace.

Lacking pace and playing a high line as we do for 80% of our games will not make for a Celtic CB.

A key feature bizarrely overlooked by our then stats men…

  9. What is the Starz on

What happened to the Kwon money

Another super star dynamic midfielder (soon to be legend of the game) that our clueless manager failed to nurture and progress.

God bless Peter Lawwell..uncovering starlets only for The Shnake Rodgers to overlook them

  10. Well, we can all hope Gustaf will develop into a very good footballer but the fact is, he hasn’t looked close to being at the requisite standard for a Celtic CB

In fact, fholk were asking for an upgrade on our present incumbents and hopefully we’ve got that Trusty

As a fan of Cameron and Liam, my feeling is if Rocki and Auston can push them, all’s good

Gustaf was hailed as a Swedish International player

Odin was hailed as the best Norwegian midfielder

Expecting too much too soon from these guys was unfair on both the players and the team

Rotterdam one year back seems a world away

The team has kicked on, hopefully our Nordic bhoys can too

    Hail Hail

  11. What is the Starz on

The transfer window is closed..Long live the transfer window

Why should our clueless board prevent us from weeping wailing and gnashing of teeth just because the transfer window is closed.

Windows ? Windows?…we don’t need no steenkin Windows

  12. Turkeys to turkey

Send them there on a fact-finding mission, we need more certainties in this world of make believe

  13. If a fairly settled core squad of professional players exist, I think the benefit of getting players signed early is overestimated, certainly in comparison to getting a decent level of player in as window closes.

I don’t know why McCarron was last minute but I’m hoping the benefit of getting him at all manifests itself during the season.

  14. Spot on…

    CELTIC MAC @ 7:48 AM,

“I see that the Republic of Ireland are playing Greece at home this evening and hope, as with Tony Ralston, Adam Idah gets another run-out, the full game if possible. For reasons which defy logic, I wanted Adam in early doors, ideally for pre-season and the mini tour of the USA. He had worked with Brendan, helped us win both the League and the Scottish Cup, and wanted to sign for Celtic. Of course things did not turn out that way, and in the meantime, we sold both Oh and Vata, did not line up any alternatives such as Miovski or Conway and left ourselves with one established central forward in Kyogo. Not the greatest bargaining position, and one which left Norwich calling the shots, even though had the deal fell through they would have been left with an unhappy player and no transfer fee. Meanwhile Idah got little or no game time, and arrived via last minute dot com. True we did not have to play CL qualifiers, but fact is Idah arrived without a good pre-season, and is now playing catch-up, and we still had to play top dollar. That said we know what he brings to the party, could get a good work with Ireland and then back to Glasgow in time for the Hearts game.

Getting a player in early from the Canaries…..that’s for the birds”

A lot of money for Trusty & Rusty but it will work oot

    Keep the faith…

    Hail Hail

I know HS,he until recently sat down below me in the north stand

I at no time suggested HS is a troll,he isn’t

He,like you,me and the majority of posters have one settled moniker and have had from day one on here, unlike the trolls range:–,

I totally get that JB is a top ghuy and wish him all the best

He’s not on my Xmas card list though..

    Hail Hail

  17. I feel sorry for Gus, think he’s been made a scapegoat in a sense.

But he is the result of a lack of process in recruitment. He was pushed as a good player (and he is/can be) by his agent and we paid a good amount of money for him.

The problem is his attributes don’t fit with what Celtic need in a central defender.

Neither does Trusty based on the last 12 months but let’s just hope that’s because he was a bad fit for Sheffield.

Unfortunately I guess the requirements for a top CB at Celtic is the same as at the very top teams in Europe, but due to finances we need to pick where we are willing to compromise.

  18. Big Jimmy on 10th September 2024 7:10 am

Thanks for those kind words, Jimmy and this:
