Developing Lagerbielke

145

Gustaf Lagerbielke was playing first team football in the Swedish Allsvenskan, a stronger league than the Scottish Premiership, when he moved to Celtic just over a year ago.  He soon played a crucial role in an early season win at Ibrox which proved to be so pivotal later in the campaign.  He also pitched in with the winner in our first home Champions League victory in a decade.

Now 24, is he is on loan at Dutch side Twente. It’s difficult to muster a firm view one way or the other on Gus.  His appearances were few and far between, and often on the most demanding occasions.  Five of his seven league appearances resulted in clean sheets.  His winning goal against Feyenoord offset two yellow cards in the earlier game in Rotterdam.

Signings don’t all work but for someone as young as Gus, they should result in a player continuing to develop.  If new arrivals are not playing regularly for Celtic, we need to find them football elsewhere.  A loan with option to buy at Oostende was enough to convince Philippe Clement’s Brugge to pay £4m for Jack Hendry just two months after the player officially left Celtic.  That loan was good for the player and good for Celtic.  Brugge even made a profit on the player when he left for Saudi last summer, although things didn’t work out at Brugge.

  1. I’ve spent time over the years thinking of players of the past so I have invented my own world cup. I have 13 teams made up of former cells. Some I struggled to get complete and have only actually used one player currently on our books though he is out on loan. The selections aren’t necessarily the best Team available but players I liked for whatever reason.

  3. I’ve no doubt Idah has underperformed so far because of a broken preseason.

With CL play offs to hopefully look forward to next season, let’s hope we get this review of our transfer dealings completed because bringing in players too late to make meaningful contributions to these games is simply ridiculous. Let’s leave those days far behind us.

These teams had some bloody good players and makes me realise how blessed we have been to have seen them in the hoops.

As I said maybe not the best ever but still decent teams

They definitely did not know Rangers would be at home to Dundee after their trip to Malmo. Nor that they would be playing that week in Europe at all.

  10. I see that the new owner of St, Johnstone hasn’t really done his research into his fanbase. They are really cutting their throats financially by cutting back Celtic and thems allocations. All this we want to be a force in our own stadium is great, but what has that done for Hibs, Hearts, etc. Fans want to see their teams play and any fan that is willing to put the miles in to follow their team, should be allowed to. If fans who live in those towns don’t really want to show up for their own home games, then have fun looking at big empty spaces. My local team here in Birmingham Alabama, the Legion, plays in a big 25,000 seater stadium. They are lucky to get 5-6000 for their home games. Most of the stands are covered up with advertisement banners and such, but it doesn’t create a good atmosphere. They are begging for the local council to build them a more appropriate sized stadium that would generate an atmosphere. Do these owners not understand that by reducing our allocation, it reduces the money coming into those towns on game day???

The alternative solution is just all become celtic fans and see how much fun life really is…except during the transfer window.

Can’t wait to see the Bhoys this weekend. I am reducing the capacity of my downstairs home theater room to just 1, as no one else appreciates dad’s ranting and raving and trying to tell me that I am not allowed to shout before 6am. Feckin kids acting like huns :)))) Probably the worst thing I have ever said as a dad:))))))

    Hail hail

His statement is in AT’s top of the page, I must be missing something and perhaps those who get away tickets can explain.

When I was last at that park we got the North and Osborne stands together with a wee bit of the main stand. I can only recall once being in the East stand probably over 7 years ago, don’t get away tickets anymore.

Reading his statement he’s allowing the same allocation except complete exclusion of the East.

  13. Prestonpans bhoys on

Another way of reading his statement is that wee bit of the main stand is for disabled Celtic access and other seats are for SJ fans 🤷

    Some effort Sir!

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Amazing effort indeed. Lovely angle to take to get the old brain cells moving. Is it based on players seen? Just thinking of James McGrory and Charlie Tully etc. Anyway love it!

  15. Hi Prestonpans Bhoys,

Then that would be fine, I think. I can understand if some teams are saying they are cutting the allocations due to fan behavior, then that is on us, but this, in my humble opinion, goes all the way back to the Huns and their pettiness. I would hate for the atmosphere to be taken away from the games.

    Thanks

    Sean

  16. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

OK Pablo – agree he needs to develop.

“Hey, Twente ! Gonnae develop him?”

I liked him in a Celtic jersey. Thought he look fairly calm doing his job. (Some defenders don’t, instead looking terrified when the ball comes into the red zone).

But, genuinely, who cares what I think.

Brendan isn’t impressed right now, for whatever reason, and that’s that.

    Good reference to Hendry, Pablo.

He and Oostende played us beautifully.

If Gustav has even a moderately successful stint in the Netherlands, absolutely no reason why he can’t come back a £9m player.

Had I thought of putting in the work to produce that list it would never have happened.

Taking catholic to mean universal it shows Celtic have recognised its origins.

There must be some merchandising options for Celtic in that grouping of information.

You might want to e mail the list to J P Tayor SLO and ask him to forward to Kevin McQuillan Head of Merchandising just to see if it sparks any ideas.

I think there is a culture of confrontation in social media exchanges that is harmful to Celtic as a whole. I think it stops Celtic being a club really open to all which a more cooperative culture would enable.

The manifestation of the confrontation culture is amongst the support itself with the labling of contributors as Mineshafters or Happy Clappers which is used to dismiss or diminish contributions.

I think that division is a result of some contributors with experience of business, business thinking and business processes bringing that experience to the debate as they see issues more from a business perspective than a footballing one , whilst those from a different background (not lesser

just different) see football first and are not really interested in how Celtic are run as business, even though how business is conducted produces the football everyone comments about.

I’m wondering with your background and contacts if it would benefit Celtic to be as transparent as possible in making more information available on the business aspect of running Celtic, starting with why they wish to do so and what they hope to achieve as a result.

I think that improving relationships with supporters is something that should be on Celtic’s business agenda with capacity created with necessary experience to form a stakeholder group with and without business background to take forward a project aimed at changing the culture from confrontation to cooperation.

I would hope, having found the officials I have dealt with in the past that those Executives and Non Executives on The Board might see this as a beneficial initiative to take forward.

  19. I would hope, having found the officials I have dealt with in the past amenable to suggestions for change made that Execs etc

  20. Just been keeping an eye on the two boys Vata and Kelly who opted to leave Celtic for pastures new. Vata has been on the bench every game for Watford without getting on once. Kelly played one half of Carabao Cup game for Millwall , before being subbed at half time in the 1-0 defeat to Leyton Orient. Then he was on the bench last Saturday in the 3-0 League victory over Sheffield Wednesday without getting on. There doesn’t seem to be any more opportunity for playing time with their new clubs than they had at Celtic Park.

  21. Scully yeh they are based on my lifetime. Players you mentioned are proper legends but having never seen them I didn’t include them. My celtic is Lisbon lions onwards really

  22. I’m just as concerned that Adam Idah looks like more of a gamble than many thought .

    £8.5 m possibly rising to £9.5 m

Our most expensive forward ever .

He’s looked like a big dumpling so far , this season .

    I know it’s early days .

But my Ohdometer is reading = potential for money being wasted .

    TT

  23. Rocco went for the money and that’s ok .

He may never make it at a high level .

He has every right to chase the cash .

Was it the best for his career in the longer term ?

    Who knows ?

    TT

  24. The big centre forward that destroyed Kilmarnock at Rugby park last season .

    Now there’s a prospect .

  25. In fairness to Idah; Ireland were rank rotten against England and couldn’t even pass the ball within 40 yards of him. 0-2 looks OK but England clearly decided not to apply the misericorde.

Tonight’s game will give a better view of where Idah and Ireland are at

  26. mmccartney

We know that both Vata and Kelly were offered contracts, and that we may not have signed McCowan had the latter stayed at Celtic Park. It is disappointing to see young players leave, but gratifying to know that we are producing players to a half decent level. Ben Doak is at the Borough so now they are all in the same league. Not easy to make it at Celtic, especially when you see range and quality of players we have signed as listed by Kevin Hughes. Time will tell if they and their agents have made the right move at the right time or if they end up in the right place at the wrong time…taken the right road but taken a wrong turn….

My, probably fatalistic, view on it is that there’s very little that Celtic can do to change what people post on the internet. People behave in pretty much the same way online no matter what the subject is these days, it would be a very big job to move the dial even slightly and I’d prefer we used our energies and resources more productively.

  28. Tintytim – good point about Idah.

    We’re buying ‘kyogo style’ different.

Idah is a decent centre forward who will help us over the course of the season.

That help will contribute to winning the league but he’s not exceptional.

It goes to show you what we’re up against with the championship & EPL.
