Direction of travel encouraging for Scottish football

759

It’s heartening to see Celtic linked with a raft of players over the weekend and encouraging for many but I’d ignore everything you read about a Celtic target this far out from the transfer window opening.  All an agent needs to do is post a DVD to Lennoxtown to be able to legitimately link his player to Celtic.  The club will also scout up to 100 players a season, enough to keep you busy on the stats sites for hours, but even Ronny doesn’t know who he will be signing at this stage of the season.

After 11 wins in 13 league games Aberdeen’s title challenge inevitably slipped.  They’ve won once since February, coming from behind against Motherwell at Pittodrie, as Celtic, Dundee and Partick Thistle have taken points from them.  We are at the stage of the season when injuries, suspensions and fatigue kick in.  Whereas Celtic were able to add quality to their squad in January, Aberdeen have to work on a tighter budget.  That the gap at the top is only seven points, with Celtic having a game in hand, says a lot for the direction of travel at Aberdeen.

If Ronny gets his treble wish, this season’s title will be a lot tighter than the last treble, won at a canter by Martin O’Neill.  It was a weaker league back then, Aberdeen were rubbish.

Talking about direction of travel, have you been watching the ebay auction for Hospitality for four for a day at this year’s Open Golf Championship at St Andrews?  This is a unique prize and has attracted some incredible support.

The auction is in aid of the Celtic Quick News appeal to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.  Shuttle transport for the five minute journey to and from the golf course as needed, with beer, Gin and Whisky tastings throughout the day with the master distiller.

You also have the chance to create a unique CQN single malt whisky cask worth potentially £5000 for future CQN charities, and you will receive a bottle of this very special single malt whisky to commemorate the great day when it is bottled in several years.

Eden Mill is Scotland’s newest and most innovative distillery and brewery incorporated in February 2012!  Located just 2 miles from the famous Old Course itself it provides a perfect base for hospitality for yourself and 3 friends on a day of your choosing at the forthcoming open golf championship on July 16th to 19th.

But this is so much more than just a day’s hospitality at the home of golf.  Before taking to the course to watch, you will enjoy a breakfast roll or two and discuss your perfect single malt whisky with the master distiller.

Whilst you and your friends are enjoying the golf he will seek to surpass your favourite whisky by using the best barley to create the right wash and recommending the right type of barrels for our very own unique CQN 1/4 cask of single malt.  A cask which will mature and provide over £5000 of future funding for our charities in a few years’ time.

You will return to the distillery by shuttle bus for lunch and an optional beer tasting and then for afternoon tea with a tutored gin and whisky tasting with the owner capping off a memorable, unique and very special day for your group and for CQN.

My thanks to Eden Mill for their incredible support.  You can bid on the auction here.

I admire Paul talking up Scottish football but disagree. Aberdeen are crap. There was no challenge. The league is crap.

That means access to the CL for us if we have ambition and intelligent planning. Happy days for us if our club desires to progress.

Just in from workate and seen your post .

We flew to Dusseldorf and then got a train to Dortmund , I had booked into a hotel beside the station so it was easier to get train back to Dusseldorf on way home .

On the Friday night we checked out several pubs / restaurants ( few beers :-) ) then on Saturday visited a Dortmund shop near hotel and then walked the 1.5 km or so to the Signal Iduna Stadium .

The shop at the stadium is incredible , spread over 2 floors and including a mini football pitch in a metal cage for the kids to kick a ball . You can buy anything from a padlock to a law mower in the Dortmund colours , they have a metal grilled wall outside the stadium full of personalised padlocks ???

There is a large pub restaurant beside the stadium with a large beer garden with food stalls called Strobels , full of families and supporters of both clubs . We arrived here about 5 hours before kick off and it was already busy , the have several TV screens around the bar and beer garden showing the other German match that afternoon .

Great , friendly atmosphere and fantastic service .

We went into the stadium about 1 1/2 hours before kick off and got more beers and went to our seats , front row of the upper tier in the stand opposite the Dortmund Yellow Wall.

We were right above the Bayern Ultras section which has a drum tower at the front for the section leaders to coordinate the singing . I don’t know what the were singing about but they didn’t stop for about 2 1/2 to 3 hours we were in the ground .

Of course the Dortmund support were fantasti also , especially the Walk On before the match started :-)

Everything is set up for the fans to be a central part of the activities on match day , they have screens in the four corners of the stadium and cameras which scan the crowd putting supporters up onto the big screens.

The food and drink outlets are everywhere and the food served was excellent ( enjoyed the beers too :-)) )

All in all a great experience and would recommend it to anyone .

Sorry for the long post , if it bored anyone just scroll past :-)

So glad you enjoyed it. My experience was similar. The pop up bars, music, food etc before the game was fantastic fun. I bought a few things in the FanWelt, the big shop. Great experience and supporters engaged hours before the game. My hoops polo shirt started a few conversations. We could do worse than go over and have a look..maybe we have. Hope ur bhoy enjoyed his birthday.

Captain Scott Brown is suspended for the game. The Scotland midfielder has gone through the disciplinary points threshold and will sit out one game.

Charlie Mulgrew (hamstring tendon) and right-back Mikael Lustig (ankle) are still out.

Meanwhile, Partick boss Alan Archibald admits he would swap a win over Celtic for three points against fellow relegation battlers Motherwell at the weekend.

Ninth-placed Jags are seven points ahead of the second-bottom Fir Park side, who will fancy their chances of reducing that deficit when they host Scottish Premiership basement side St Mirren on Tuesday night.

Asked if the visit of the chasing Steelmen on Saturday was the more important of this week’s two fixtures, Archibald told Press Association Sport: “Yes it is. I don’t think you can lie. I think it is more important.

“If we are going to pick three points from either game, we would take three against Motherwell.

“But this game against Celtic is up first and if we can take anything from it, it’s a bonus.

“But we know that Motherwell will be the bigger game for us.”

Archibald believes the goalless draw against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Saturday – which means the Firhill side have lost only one in five after five straight defeats – was ideal preparation for the match against the league leaders.

The former Thistle defender said: “It might be a good point and see us staying in this league and it looks as if it will set us up nicely for the Celtic game.

“It will be a similar type of game. Celtic will have more of the ball so we will need the same work ethic.

“The only difference is we have to take our chances because you don’t get too many against them.”

Kris Doolan and Stevie Lawless are doubts for the trip. Striker Doolan sustained a hamstring injury and wide-man Lawless picked up a knock in the goalless draw against the Dons.

Dan Seaborne (ankle) remains out along with Sean Welsh (ankle) and Christie Elliott (broken hand).
