Dirty battle between SFA and SPFL

803

The SFA put on a show yesterday, providing boxing and snooker promoter, Barry Hearn, with a stage to take aim at the SPFL.  I would urge caution when digesting Hearn’s words.  He took aim at some easy sounding targets, for example, the league not having a sponsor, but the league don’t have a sponsor by choice.

The alternative choice would be to sell the rights for a value considerably less than the old SPL’s rights.  The league took the view that they would rather maintain their asking price, and go to market when the league is in a more competitive position.  This may, or may not, be a wise decision, we don’t know, and neither does Barry Hearn.

He also talked about making money by selling fights between low-quality but committed boxers at £150 per ticket.  Good for him.  This kind of sport, and his auditorium-filled darts, may well have a bright future, but it’s not the direction Scottish football should be heading.

The backdrop to all of this is what’s going on at Hampden.  There is a power-struggle between the SFA and the SPFL.  The latter are more likely to deliver radical change, the former want to maintain control, privilege and the bowling committee-type structure which has lasted for over a century.

Can you imagine how inadequate the SFA would appear if the SPFL held a similar forum, with an invited guest there to poke fun at the SFA president’s EBT and “heavily conflicted” past?  If the Association are trying to clip the league’s wings I suspect they will fail.  It’s more likely the SPFL will redouble their efforts to bring structural reform to our game.

This has become a dirty battle.

Some great fun at Celtic Park last night, it was like the old days, you know, when John Greig was manager at Ibrox.

Remember, Joe Miller, tonight, at Waterstones, Stirling, from 5pm. Signing copies of Caesar and the Assassin, bring your camera.

The 2015 CQN Annual is through design and ready to ship next week. You can pre-order yours now.

normally the market dictates what something is worth -obviously the market doesn’t share the league’s valuation of the sponsorship.

  10. Just watched STV news,oh they are hurting, huns score did not even get a mention.

Can you imagine if it were Celtic???

  11. Brokenseatsgate! Strongly suspect sabotage here, as earlier at Fir Park.

Authorities should instruct CCTV cameras to pan in to the stands after immediately after match. This would take a few minutes. Footage then examined, without waiting several days to make a complaint about the broken seats. Why the delay ?

Anyway, greetings from sunny Honolulu….ALLOAH, ALLOAH !

Are the SPFL waiting on a certain team’s promotion to the top league in order to attract a sponsor willing to pay what they think they’re worth? Could be a long wait

    —————–

The SPFL will be watching the LC SF wearing brown trousers. If it’s a humiliation they’ll be lucky to get a sponsor even if Sevco do go up.

  15. Could this be the result that finally “kills” them off?

They will probably want to get rid of the man they call “Super”, but, with him on one of the more “onerous contracts”, they can’t afford to do so. So, they bag him, and immediately go back into Administration, so they dont need to pay him. 25 point deduction, another year down below, and the “L” word looming large!

Simples?, or am I missing something here?

So, my prediction last night – that FatSally would be gone this morning – does not appear to be true. But, even a broken watch is right twice a day, so let me try this ….

Sally is only still there because (i) he wants a payoff to leave, and (ii) Sevco dont have any money, and cant afford to pay him off. Nonetheless, they are going to have to let him go, as even more zombear fans are threatening to walk away (again). Eventually, the board will have to let him go (but wont be able to come to a mutually agreeable package).

Sally will sue, and seek to have his money ringfenced, which will kick off the administration process.

Just remember, you read it hear first.

I remember Andy McGlinchey from Yorkhill St. and the McLaughlin brothers from Overnewton St. At that time the Stirling Castle was a Galbraiths store, before it became the SC. I went to the ‘Conachan’ Cup Final on that bus. There was also a great footballer from Edward St. George ‘Kopa’ Copeland.

‘Something to show for the expense….two trophies out of nineteen available over four years at a cost of over £800,000 per annum’.

McCoist has to be the biggest failure in the history of Scottish football, considering the backing he gets. He also qualifies for the biggest brass neck ever.

Big thanks to our msm for helping to keep him in a job.

This may, or may not, be a wise decision, we don’t know, and neither does Barry Hearn.

    ===========

I think Hearn was making the point that SPFL should negotiate better and market our leagues better.

He argues that we put ourselves in a weak position because we talk our game down rather than up.

His argument is that if our executives cannot cut a better deal then they should be out the door not, as we have done with Doncaster, be given a bonus.

“when the league is in a more competitive position”

Is this a euphemism for when Sevco are in top league?

Ally’s ability to manage will determine whether or not there is a sponsor for next season, it seems.

“when the league is in a more competitive position” then the sponsor and TV deals can be renegotiated, surely.

McCoist’s pay-off could well be prohibitive, but wouldn’t it be REALLY convenient if a potential replacement had just resigned from a job and wouldn’t require a compensation payment…..?
