Celtic suffered a 1-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League knockout playoff game last night, but there was plenty to be encouraged by in the performance and tactical maturity on display.
The game offered up few genuine chances, an outcome determined by Celtic, who were refused to expose their defence throughout the match. By the end of the game, the shot count favoured Bayern by only one attempt.
The goals which were conceded, were not a consequence of in-play tactical failings. Right on halftime, Olise got a break of the ball off Greg Taylor, before smashing an outstanding shot into the top corner of the goal. Celtic switched off at a corner kick for the second four minutes after the break. For the bulk of those minutes, both teams were camped inside the Celtic box waiting for two consecutive corners, the first delayed for Auston Trusty to receive treatment. Defences are prone to switch off after a delay.
Nicolas Kuhn finished a brilliant move 25 seconds into the game by thrashing a shot past Neuer in the Bayern goal. The goal was correctly chopped off as the ball passed through Adam Idah’s legs, while the striker was in an offside position. It was the fourth Celtic goal chopped off in the last two home Champions League games.
On another night, Celtic would have been awarded a penalty which Arne Engels foot was stamped on. VAR took several minutes before asking the referee to review. The ref seemed struck by indecision and delayed the game further before favouring the German side.
Bayern seemed in control until the final 15 minutes. For the remainder of the game, including 7 minutes added time, Celtic battered on the Bayern door. The deluge started when Daizen Maeda nipped in front of Manuel Neuer, rounded the keeper but found the angle too acute to get a shot on target.
This lifted confidence and a few moments later Celtic were back in the tie. Alistair Johnston met an Engels corner at the front post, Trusty headed the ball goalwards for Yang, who knocked it onto the head of the man of the moment, Maeda, to score from 3 yards.
It was all Celtic now. Johnston forced a wonderful save from Neuer, Reo Hatate had a shot deflected off the line for a corner, while Jota made the most of his late-game cameo.
It was the most disciplined performance I recall seeing from a Celtic team. Even chasing the game in the 97th minute, the ball was always treated with respect. On one occasion, Cameron Carter-Vickers played left back from 3 minutes following a Celtic corner, rather than sprint back into position and risk leaving a gap. There has been growth in this Celtic team since early in the campaign, credit to Brendan Rodgers and the players.

Bada @ 2.13 – where did you get that info? I can’t find it.
Anyone know if the away goals rule comes in to play now we’re at the knockout phase? Thanks in advance!
delighted that all the fans who usually work on a saturday will get a rare chance to see celtic live on a weekend for the hibs cup game.
if that kick off time is true!
Thorismund,
Don’t think away goals count anymore.
LADTH,
Was thinking the same – i finish at 6 that day so will get to see (or at least hear) it 🕺🏻
I used to get annoyed listening to Calmac telling us that the team will need to learn from another european defeat, only for it to happen again not long after.
Well now it looks like some lessons have been learned.
I don’t doubt BM could potentially have a few more gears they could step through but we looked a better, less naïve team throughout.
How much of that is due to lessons being learned and how much of that is from having better players?
More fines ?https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c30dedle3zno
Thanks, Hartson!
we’re pleased to give you advance notice that tickets for the William Hill Premiership match v Aberdeen on Tuesday, February 25 (kick-off 8pm) will be available on general sale from 10am on Friday, February 14.

Some folk are hard to please :-))
Cheerio for now.
Couldn’t say anything about the rest of the crowd last night…. it was my first time in the Rail section and it was fantastic …..hope to get the chance again .
So proud of our efforts and if luck( or pen decision) had gone our way we may well have got at least a draw …….
Things to build on .
💚🤍💛
why are so many folk so concerned about what other fans do?
whether its turning up late, leaving early, singing or not singing etc
watch the game and mind your own business, it has bugger all to do with you!

it definitely wont be that time or they wouldnt be able to show it live.
i seen a bbc picture tweet earlier that said 7.00 as suggested. it also gave the other 3 games kick off time and said which of the games were on bbc, but didnt say ours was which means it will be on premier sports, so the saturday evening will be right.
The Celtic defence was excellent last night and had the cruel misfortune of conceding seconds before the whistle for hallf time. Yes it was a terrific canon shot from the Munich player who had cost the Germans 50 million .
to sign in the summer. Yes, that’s what we are up against in the later stages of Europe. Harry Kane will never have an easier chance to score than the present offered to him on a plate last night, a big black mark against the defence.
The match went as I expected possibly Celtic showing the Germans too much respect. Daizen must be the fittest man in football today and has been moulded into terrific player since his arrival at Celtic has kept us still in contention with his goal.
The Spanish referee certainly did us no favours last night with some of his decisions particularly the stamp on Arne when in a scoring position.
Let’s all do the huddle
Guilty as charged of not understand the mentality of folk paying a lot of money to go to watch a game of football and claiming to be supporters of a team.
Said folk then sit down 5 mins after start, piss off for a queue for a free pie or even non free pie 5 or more mins pre half time. Return 5 mins after half time and then go home 7 or 8 mins before regular end of game time in a huge CL game with the scores close.
I can’t help but wonder what players think of it.
As somebody who travels from Fife and back I realise I am closer than many but definitely not closer than all those early leavers.
I look around Europe at the likes of Germany and see such a different mentality amongst the genuine supporters in these counties.
So rightly or wrongly is does irritate me. It’s a lot more than buying a pint and leaving a third of it. Even more when the score is close when they chose to leave.
Let’s all do the huddle
I respect others may well have a different view. Especially in the modern consumer era.
And especially when it is not possible to do as we did in the 70s and 80s and walk around from the jungle toward the main stand side at the Celtic end gradually through the second half to be at the exit nearest the supporters buses for south west Glasgow which were parked down Kinnear Rd at full time.
Molde 0
Shamrock Rovers 1
Not good news for us that Ferencvaros are winning. We may need to have our coefficient above theirs for seeding purposes in August. They will be 3 ahead after tonight.
Sadly looking at the Conf League Hearts Killie and St Mirren have really let us down in accumulating the Scotland Coeff points. Some really poor teams there and we have no one involved at this stage. It will be some time before Scotland has an automatic CL place again
Greece Norway Czech Belgium Denmark and even Serbia all with a few teams left in Europe.
Bada Bing
Good to see Norwegian teams not gaining more co effs.

B78,
i honestly wouldnt let it bother you!
and just wait until they start allowing pints to be sold at the pie stalls if that ever happens – you will get folk up and down constantly and some wont even bother to go to their seats at all 😃
I know we should want rangers to pick up some coeff points for the greater good but I must say Fenerbace as a possible opponent for thems does amuse me.
For them to play
Jose’s mob 3 days prior to coming to CP would be great. The other option of Twente or Bodo is there but I really want them to get the Turks.

and those who pay for a seat then dont turn up.
sorry bud, but it has everything to do with everyone.
if you are a shareholder/season card holder, the behaviour of all fans is definately in your spec. everyone should be able to be concerned when they see supporters not supporting and in my own case, asking the question, would other supporters support us more buy actually attending for the whole match.
german and english clubs now excel in actually staying to support for the whole game.
the awat support last night were once again, better than a lot of the celtic support.
even then i dont get people saying there wasnt a good atmosphere, there was.
B78, it looks like they have enforced down time the weekend of our SC QF?
i wonder how long it should actually take to publish the responses to the fans survey.
why does it take so long to do an opinion survey.
transparent my arse.

ach, an away support being livelier than a home support isnt an unusual occurrance, especially when the away support have travelled a fair distance!
i thought the atmosphere was good last night, but it gets nervy watching games like that so folk are glued to the game while biting their fingernails and not necessarily thinking about jumping about singing and dancing.
if someone wants to pay their ticket money to watch a game of football, and they go and err, watch a game of football, then thats up to them!
Whilst accepting that supporters can leave when they want, I am with Saint Stivs in wondering why so many leave early. I accept that leaving ten minute before the end allows for an earlier home-time but I cannot really understand why getting home half an hour earlier makes up for losing ten minutes of one of the highlights of the week/fortnight.
if someone wants to pay their ticket money to watch a game of football, and they go and err, watch a game of football, then thats up to them!
—————
you know my thoughts.
if you are lucky enough to be allowed to buy a season ticket there should be a minimum number of games you attend as part of the purchase agreement.
19 home games, you musat attend 10., as an example.

young boys game. the jock stein lower emptied rapidly 10 minutes before we scored.
Guys,
Only me, but I hate mentioning price tags of our opponents.
So what if they cost and are worth more than our players.
The anology diminishes and devalues our domestic achievements where the boot is on the other foot.
As for the penalty ( and it was a penalty) that was not given.
So what if the Bayern player got a miniscule touch prior to his stamping . Its still a penalty in the same vein that a follow through tackle that plays the ball first but takes out the man is still an ordering off offence.
Are we still lauding foreign refs?
HH.
If supporters make the effort to actually attend rather than watch the game in the pub or in their cosy home then its up to them when they leave.
Perhaps we should look why our supporters leave early for many games and put the blame squarely on the shambolic transport situation to and from our ground.
HH.
DR in a real offensive again the Baldy Belgium:
“Philippe Clement’s bottle crashed against Queen’s Park at the weekend – and he threw Bailey Rice under the bus to try and save his own skin.
That’s the view of our man Keith Jackson”
The part of me preferring our co eff vs Norway is happy for Twente to be beating Bodo.
The part which dislikes rangers would have preferred Bodo.
Away goals don’t count double any more. For clarity.
Greenpinata
Consumers more than supporters in my view.
As St Stivs suggests Germany and England are 2 countries amongst many where real supporters tend to stay and watch the games and support their teams rather than piss off to pubs or catch buses.
Not sure you would say it is much easier getting away from the new Munich stadium than CP either.
That said fans there make it an event to go to games.
If I was a player looking round at Cp with 10 minutes to go and the game sat at 2-1 or 1-1 with stands emptying I might find it a bit weird these so called fans are not so interested.
As I said I do respect some come from Aberdeen or Ireland but most don’t. For me it is a 120 mile round trip to CP. so it’s not like I even live on the doorstep.
Plenty of others would love the season books and would stay to back the team I am sure.
Just mustered the courage to watch highlights from last night.
My comment at lunchtime re. ROGs insight came to me in real time at the game last night.
Watching the highlights only confirms ROGs insight.
