Discriminate application of the rules and a lack of defensive structure

364

The Rules of the Game do not discriminate between a first and second yellow, but it is the discriminate application of the rules that causes problems.  Two mis-timed – but not dangerous – challenges were enough for referee Nick Walsh to dismiss Callum McGregor, players are given latitude at the second yellow in the same scenario every week in the calendar.  When cast against the off-the-ball stamping, kneeing and kicking Celtic players have endured in this fixture without protection from referees, it is clear what we are up against.

Celtic took control from the off but the intervention of Walsh; awarding a foul against Scott Brown on the goalkeeper when no foul happened, awarding Newco a throw-in deep inside the Celtic half that should have gone the other way and three further fouls for shoulder challenges that went Newco’s way, broke the pattern of play.

Three of the four goals came from mistakes by our defensive mid, two from Scott Brown and one from his replacement, Ismaila Soro.  Scott wanted the win yesterday as much as you or I, but despite improved performances in recent months, the tank is empty.  Ismaila will learn from yesterday.  He was thrown into the game cold, there is a lot more to come from him.

For this third time in 2021, Celtic went to Ibrox and created a hatful of chances, at least on this occasion they took one, although many went a begging.   Creativity is clearly not the problem.

Odsonne Edouard got on the scoresheet and put in his most impressive and interested-looking performance in some weeks  Mohamed Elyounoussi again impressed, in a better-structured team he would be a star.  Kristoffer Ajer was man-of-the-match.  He repeatedly transformed defence into attack; too powerful, fast and skilful for Newco players to touch.

So where did it go wrong?  Teams practice how to play with 10 men and the first thing the practice is how to defend.  Not for the first time this season Celtic were porous, lacking a robust structure.  Defence protects the keeper and midfield protects the defence.  Scott Bain had little cover, the same could be said for the defence.  Our shape with 10 men was all wrong.

Still, as Viv said, tomorrow is another day!

Man Utd fans are in the right to be upset at THEIR club being swindled from them.

All fans have to demand fan ownership.

Fitba players are needed not multi millionaires who are more interested in their Instagram profiles.

What were Man Utd fans supposed to do? Organise a share purchasing campaign like deluded and woefully out of touch Celtic fans are curretly doing?

How long will that take? How much will it cost? How much richer do some people need to be before they’ll move?

Violence is not to be condoned. But its the voice of the silent majority and they’ll get louder, the more conceited and out of touch PLC boards continue to push them away.

It’ll probably lead to a general strike with all politicians sacked which would be a good thing.

  2. The Ghood will prevail on

Paul67, for pity’s sake. Your club has been wrecked by a thousand self-inflicted cuts, and yet you analyse the refereeing performance. Your tagline references ‘lazy journalism’, yet the first duty of proper journalism is to hold power to account.

This mess we find ourselves in … it could all have been so different. We could have been miles ahead of therangers for a generation, perhaps even forever, something our grandparents could only dream of. But Lawwell and his pals blew it. Done with this blog.

  4. Good afternoon all and hope that you are all enjoying the break if not the weather this Bank Holiday Monday.

P67 has done many fine things for the Celtic community and provided a platform for our discussions for many years and for all that he deserves our thanks.

However one of the reasons that I contribute my tuppence worth so infrequently now is that like the Lawwell regime the blog has grown staid and stale.

Was the ref poor yesterday? Without a doubt but does that explain why we lost?

Only someone blind to all our many failings would highlight the ref as a significant factor yesterday.

And of course even if we should take the option of blaming the ref, the next question should be why didn’t we use the opportunity that 2012 afforded us to clean up that side of the game in Scotland?

The answer would of course point the finger back at CFC PLC and the man on the ground, Peter Lawwell.

I have no doubt in my mind that in his own mind PL is a fan. However he carried out the board and Dermot’s bidding for so long now that he has become severely detached from the other fans in the support.

Our current board remind me of the last days of the once might Soviet Union. The directors box resembles the line up you used to see atop Lenin’s Tomb for the May Day or October Revolution parades.

Old grey men feebly waving at young people they no longer represented nor knew what they wanted or hoped for!

As others far better qualified than me have pointed out, the shelf life for a CEO should be about 7 or 8 years maximum, to keep the organisation fresh and forward looking.

Peter has been the main man for the best part of 20. The good work of his early years in bringing down the debt while still winning things against the financially dope up huns is now long past.

The opportunity of 2012 to bring Scottish football in to line with the rest of Europe and to root out the anti Celtic, anti Catholic malaise at Hampden in the SFA and League set ups squandered in the attempt to placate the Blue Pound.

He couldn’t even secure the recognition of the new entity as a new club, so that now we have to endure not only the poor refereeing decisions but also the galling 55 drivel being spouted by the great unwashed!

I normally admire loyalty in a person or organisation but to persist with this current line I’m afraid that P67 is starting to treat the people on here with the same distain as the board treat us in the support.

When Rodgers did a runner we got £9M for him and the people he took with him. PL and the board replaced them with an out of work manager who had already been found wanting as our manager.

That lack of ambition finally bit us on our backside this season and yesterday in particular.

Sad that I am to say it but unless the blog and P67 admit the real failings that have brought about our downfall then it will become increasingly irrelevant and be consigned to the dustbin of history just like the old Politburo!

Our Board and boards throughout the UK will shudder at yesterday’s scenes at Old Trafford. Following the super league fiasco, fans want to take back control of their clubs. In reality it won’t happen but the days of fat cat executives milking clubs dry for their own benefit are over. Lawwell can thank his lucky starts he announced he was ‘retiring’ some months ago. Had he not done so, one shudders to think what chaos would have ensued following yet another debacle yesterday. When thinking about who is to blame, keep that in mind.

  10. Haven’t seen the game, but the scoreline was what I expected – given we went down to 10 men so early then maybe we dodged a more serious hammering. There was no way this team could muster up a strong performance – it was a complete dead rubber in an empty stadium and more than half the team know they won’t even be here in a couple of weeks. It’s been a forgettable season and I hope a one-off. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

They cant afford to buy the billionaires out , and once the gates open again, those same fans will not boycott the clubs, it just wont happen.

If we can’t or won’t do something about the refereeing , we have to follow Jock Stein’s philosophy of being good enough to beat the opposition AND the referees .

That can be achieved by having the right management and players .

Brendan Rodgers prepared for playing with ten men and achieved victory over Sevco when ‘Red Card Ross’

sent Jozo off at Ibrox .

That was never going to happen yesterday because we don’t have the management or players capable of it .

We have on opportunity to change that , but will we ? Even if it takes an extra season?

SMcM = 16 months coaching at Motherwell after retiring from football.

Moves onto us and is given a role with the youth team in Jan 2019.

Along with DmD who joins in preparation for the great rift that will be BR leaving.

The issue is not SMcM it is the lack of quality in the CP coaching set up.

We lose BR within a month of him joining and now he has to learn from NL and JK.

We all know their capabilities and we just hoover up ex players and tell them to get on with it.

Absolutely no imagination or effort — just rummage through an old phone book and see who you find / remember.

    We need new coaching blood.

BR should us the way things should work.

No favours to mates just people who can do the job.

SMcM needs to spend more time away from CP so that he gets more experience of other environments and other coaching styles — bringing him back into a coaching desert after just over a year at Motherwell is no good for either party.

Then we have the strange case of JK — he has been a coach at CP for nearly 10 years.

The only thing of note about this time was that he was PL’s man in the dressing room.

He offers nothing for that 10 year investment — again not good for him or us.

And now we are to DO’D — I am surprised SP has not been mentioned or GL / BB.

We are fishing in a small gene pool.
