Dollars and Celtic’s diminishing Australia market

306

Right from the off, Celtic knew there was a chance Newco would pull out of the Sydney Super Cup.  We negotiated a better package, the right to announce the tour and to call it the Ange Homecoming Tour.  Newco were fully occupied with the prospect of a couple of million landing in the bank, knowing nothing about their commercial value, compared to Celtic.

When the league breaks for the World Cup, Ange Postecoglou will head home for the first time in three years.  It is an opportunity for Celtic to garner support in an important foreign market.

Emigration from Scotland to America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand dropped off in recent decades.  As a consequence, a large portion of Celtic supporters in these markets moved there over 30 years ago.  They are older and are not a market that will foster support too far into the future.  Despite having an Australian legend as manager, without some work, our commercial prospects there diminishing.

Competing for eyeballs outside the almighty EPL is difficult, but the Almighty has given us a ladder.  We have a high-profile event taking place in Australia in five months, set to generate future dollars and fans.  We also have a high profile in Japan, a market I see little effort put into, outside of social media.  A 2023 Japanese tour is needed.

Big Wavy- I’d like to see CDM who can play centre half in an emergency too. Versatility is good. I know Bitton wasn’t the world’s greatest at centre half bit he could do a job at times and we could miss that.

Think Ange showed he likes a stable partnership there so not much movement unless injury forced. If we needed to convert a CDM then it would be behind the following:

    1. CCV

    2. New left footed partner of high quality.

    Reserve : Starfelt

Reserve : Young un promoted – Lawal or Murray. And sell Welsh for his sake and ours.

    Scores!🍀

New Scottish VAR took time to consider how they could disallow. No rule found, game restarts after 1 hour delay.

Too previous…brother Madden (currently reffing down south) is being consulted ‘live’ about that claim and it seems…yes we’re hearing…in fact, it’s a clear offside SIMPLY COS the scorer is wearing green and white hoops.

Please don’t waste a good story with facts …

M/G vs Bearsden — more foodbanks / more social housing / more £1mill mansions.

    View from the next county.

Regarding the M/G 2004’s — they must have the spawn of Hugh Grant playing at inside left.

He sounded like they had signed him from a cathedral choir.

Aus shows the future — if we don’t put some effort in then their children as you highlight will dream of the EPL. Have we lost 18 / 20 counties in Ireland already to the EPL?

If we have a dynamic / active / relevant football outlook then we will have a chance of growing our fanbase. Sitting in SPL pot hunting mode worrying about TFOD2.1 will not cut it.

I would say that the squad we have at present is more than capable of winning the league again.

But as far as Europe goes, there has been no improvement so far to the squad.

If we hope to even have the slightest chance in champions league then a defensive midfielder is a must.

No excuse not to sign one as the club is still majorly in the black.

Going in to the competition without one is volunteering to handicap yourself in the competition before a ball has been kicked.

  18. St Tams,

    HH

  20. RobertTressell – My expectations/hopes at the start of the summer were to sign CCV and Jota (expected CCV, hoped for Jota, got both), and strengthen left back, so all my boxes are ticked.

I’ve always rated Seigrist so was pleasantly surprised we signed him. I suspect Hart will retain the gloves for this season with Siegrist used sparingly, taking over next season when Hart may drop to backup for his final year.

For the CDM position I remain unsure what role Ange sees for McCarthy and Ideguchi, with neither used in any meaningful volume last season. Would we be looking for a first team starter or another squad player? First picks across the middle would appear to be Hatate, McGregor and O’Riley/Turnbull, adding another first team option to those 4 would be a definite plus but not absolutely necessary. On the other hand adding another squad level CDM doesn’t help us much given the paucity of playing time our current options get. I wonder if we’ll see anything of Scott Robertson in the pre-season friendlies, it’s quite an achievement to go on three separate loan moves (albeit to EPL league 1) at 18-20 and impress at all of them, would be good to see how he’s developed.

In central defence we needn’t forget we still have Welsh who is still young for a defender but provides a solid backup, however another option would be beneficial. I’d be surprised in Ange doesn’t see CCV/Starfelt as his go-to centre-back partnership so any addition would be backup, this is why I find it highly unlikely we were ever seriously interested in Ikatura. I hear there’s a lad at Liverpool who doesn’t mind sitting on a bench for a year.

Thought I’d have one post as a response to a very emotional fellow Celt

As regards our teams future prospects ???

I’m very opTIMistic and I know it’s early days, but that young bhoy from

the green isle, John Kenny, looks a real prospect.

Two goals on his debut, tall, fast, hard working.

Could we have the new King Kenny ?

O.K I’ll get my lurkin coat again.

    I hope you are right.

I’m not naive enough to think we can make top two in a group, depending obviously on who we draw. but getting one of quality in could be the difference between third (and an extended run in Europa Cup) and finishing last.

  24. bournesouprecipe on

Celtic don’t buy successful Centre Backs in the multi million pound bracket only to buy another ‘better’ one to replace them with in the following season. Any CB we do sign will replace want away Jullien and will have to earn the right to split the excellent defensive partnership which helped win the league. The alleged signing targets were behind CCV and Starfelt in pedigree IMO , net spend will dictate as ever settling around £20M. Any fee for Jullien will be trying to recoup his deminishing fee and value.

  25. Anyone any figures available around “football tourism” ?

I was looking at the 2019 accounts, and there is a comment that 43,000 visitors took the celtic park tour during that fiscal year.

There are 2 tours a day monday to friday.

4 on a saturday and sunday when no game on.

43, 000 doesnt seem a lot of spending to me. (£800k revenue or so).

I wonder if the hampden tour does more, or even the brox.
