Dollars and Celtic’s diminishing Australia market

306

Right from the off, Celtic knew there was a chance Newco would pull out of the Sydney Super Cup.  We negotiated a better package, the right to announce the tour and to call it the Ange Homecoming Tour.  Newco were fully occupied with the prospect of a couple of million landing in the bank, knowing nothing about their commercial value, compared to Celtic.

When the league breaks for the World Cup, Ange Postecoglou will head home for the first time in three years.  It is an opportunity for Celtic to garner support in an important foreign market.

Emigration from Scotland to America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand dropped off in recent decades.  As a consequence, a large portion of Celtic supporters in these markets moved there over 30 years ago.  They are older and are not a market that will foster support too far into the future.  Despite having an Australian legend as manager, without some work, our commercial prospects there diminishing.

Competing for eyeballs outside the almighty EPL is difficult, but the Almighty has given us a ladder.  We have a high-profile event taking place in Australia in five months, set to generate future dollars and fans.  We also have a high profile in Japan, a market I see little effort put into, outside of social media.  A 2023 Japanese tour is needed.

Our problems against Bodo we’rent caused by a lack of physicality but athleticism. It’s the game now in Europe, especially against teams outwith the EPL.

Bodo get the ball forward quickly, they transition quickly and get numbers forward quickly in support. It’s basic stuff for successful European teams who look to break the press that everyone uses. Bodo’s success comes from quick skillful players who get up and down the park. Our 3 in midfield didn’t have the speed to recover, we were overrun not overpowered. From memory we had a mix of Rogic, O’Riley, Biton & Macgregor in the two legs. O’Riley and Rogic played together in both games iirc. The lack of dynamism compared to bodo was very obvious. I commented on it at the time, Paul67 did an article on it, something slo g the lines of never again.

My memory of our last goal conceded from a corner is Liam scales, our 6’ 2” left back with his head in his hands after losing his man. GT was far more effective than scales at defending crosses.

Defending is done the complete length of the pitch these days. A left back that presses a winger in his own half is a better defender than one who closes his man down to stop a cross coming in, in Ange’s system at least. Getting up and down the flank is more important than jumping high defending a set piece.

Ange’s Celtic look to outscore the opposition and force them back by playing as much of the game in the opposition half as possible. Front foot aggression. We don’t stop.

It’ll be the same against the Huns next season. We won’t be changing our pattern of play to beat theirs, we’ll do what we did to beat them comfortably twice, only better

  5. Not read anything on this bhlog yet but hats off to Drambowie Celt for a great heartfelt post last night and

Simple question – do Celtic (the reason why Celtic even exist) have a high profile in Ireland?????????

I don’t think we are in disagreement. If you check back, you will see that not once did I mention lack of height. I wrote that Goldson, Katic and Helander had all scored winning headers against us and that we had better be prepared for the onslaught. I didn’t say how. I’ll leave that to Ange, but preventing crosses coming in would be a start ( and I know the Undead will get their inevitable free kicks in dangerous areas ).

No argument from me on your post. Rogic and O’Riley, despite their skill, looked like sloths against Bodo. For the Orcs, we need tactics to overcome the next Madden like semi final performance from the MIB. And we know it will come.

Finally, I think we must acknowledge that we have to abandon our pursuit of Steven Fletcher.

  10. Football Fans in Ireland ,apart from the few Huns around, for the most part follow the EPl.

Almost to a man they would say Celtic is their second team.

There is obviously a smaller totally Celtic Support who don’t give a feck about the EPL.

I must have been asked a thousand times over the years what team I support.

When I say Celtic the response is ah Yea , I support Celtic too but who do you support in the EPL.

I get a blank look, when I say I have no interest in the EPL & rarely watch a game.
