Dollars and Celtic’s diminishing Australia market

306

Right from the off, Celtic knew there was a chance Newco would pull out of the Sydney Super Cup.  We negotiated a better package, the right to announce the tour and to call it the Ange Homecoming Tour.  Newco were fully occupied with the prospect of a couple of million landing in the bank, knowing nothing about their commercial value, compared to Celtic.

When the league breaks for the World Cup, Ange Postecoglou will head home for the first time in three years.  It is an opportunity for Celtic to garner support in an important foreign market.

Emigration from Scotland to America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand dropped off in recent decades.  As a consequence, a large portion of Celtic supporters in these markets moved there over 30 years ago.  They are older and are not a market that will foster support too far into the future.  Despite having an Australian legend as manager, without some work, our commercial prospects there diminishing.

Competing for eyeballs outside the almighty EPL is difficult, but the Almighty has given us a ladder.  We have a high-profile event taking place in Australia in five months, set to generate future dollars and fans.  We also have a high profile in Japan, a market I see little effort put into, outside of social media.  A 2023 Japanese tour is needed.

I think all our Japanese players have that underlying toughness,

Hatate got clattered by the big centre half oy in the friendly the other night, he got the fella back with a swipe some minutes later. in turn the big fella clattered him again, and Reo just smirked it off.

Ernie is correct in that is allowable for Amazon to reduce burden, alas the whole tax infrastructure benefitting global transnational corps like Amazon was untouched while Gordon was in charge. The foundations for Amazons feral tax policy were made end of last century and beginning of this. All allowable by government. All part of consistent policy of governments bowing to Amazon. All part of Tony’s City policy.

Would be interesting to see if he would want to get involved with us.

To me a huge improvement on the DD stagnation currently in play.

    Club dichotomy:

    Stagnation = Boardroom.

    Growth agenda = Manager’s office.

    Better than nothing.

  7. Many a poster on here has chastised the ordinary fan for criticising players.

We are requently told the managers and scouts no best.

I’m just wondering who the geniuses were that decided David Robertson and Aaron Hickey weren’t old enough to make it at Celtic ?

Then there is the humongous list of signed failures.

    Most recently ,Ajeti,Barkas ,Bolingoli.

£20,000,000 m down the drain on wages ,transfers ,and agents fees.

    We simply must do better.

But he has been involved in 2 big transfers that have made decent windfalls for his clubs.

  12. Early career

After spending time in the youth system at Heart of Midlothian, Hickey had a spell with the academy teams at Celtic. After four years at Celtic he chose to return to Hearts in 2018, with Celtic receiving 30% of a future transfer fee.[1][2]

    ———-

would be behind Izaguirre and Teirney have shaped his thinking ?

I do find the narrative that the players who leave for Bayern, Liverpool, others its Celtics fault.

Dont they make the choices themselves ?

  13. TT,

Brentford are no mugs when it comes to doing their homework on signings. Well run outfit…so they clearly know best.

But doesn’t seem to have the physique of a Tierney, Ramsey or even Patterson. Doesn’t seem that quick and whilst had decent technique, didn;t see a trick in him…

I think Scottish full backs are just en vogue at the moment it seems.

Good luck to him. A Tim I believe.

Jordan is not a traditional centre forward, have a look at his positional play, link up and areas he takes up on the pitch, he is a very good player.

    DESSYBHOY on 9TH JULY 2022 12:24 PM

If hearts have a sell on, I would expect celtic to get 30% of heart’s sell on in the same we got 30% of the initial fee. I am sure celtic’s 30% will be based on 30% of whatever heart’s receive for hickey rather than when they recieve it.

Those that think not suggest celtic will get nothing because they got 30% of the initial fee, but the initial fee is not the overall fee, the add ons are part of the overall structure of the sale so I would hazard a guess that any future sell on is part of the same transfer. Anything else would become very messy with clubs getting screwed right left and centre with lots of skullduggery and lpotential litigation.

Andy Robertson, left Celtic when he was 15.

No one knew how he would turn out.

Hickey left Celtic because he wasn’t happy where the coaching staff were playing him.

As for Dembele tearing Hickey a new one.

He was actually injured and Hearts had used all their subs.

  16. Seen nothing about Hickey that impresses.Greg Taylor better.I know RB and LB,.

Can we ever get any money for the failures?.Surely its not impossible to get at least a million for Soro.1.5 for Boli,,2.5 for Ajeti,There’s 5 million.Chances of getting them back next year,if only loan.Rinse and repeat.

  17. bournesouprecipe on

Problem with Celtic hard men is they are targeted and are not allowed to be hard men. We had a Captain that was booked with impunity with Beaton and the crew lined up in waiting. That’s the difference in Scotland and another reason we’ve gone down the creative route as opposed to signing journey men hammer throwers.

In the last Sevco league game GG came on late in the game to give Celtic a bit more weight up front, he was booked in his first 50/50 challenge.

We need a defensive midfielder to back up Calum or allow him further forward, he has to be exceptional and not a squad filler or a player that be a marked man.

    Take your time Ange CSC

Hickey to Brentford….£19 million…….we had 2 bids knocked back for him in his last months at Hearts……

I haven’t seen a great deal of the boy and I guess there’s a bit of buying potential. As a comparison right now on capability and experience, Juranovic should be rated far more expensive. Will be interesting to see how he does in comparison to our much cheaper new left back.

I thin a number of issues have been in play — starting with a big is better in the youths 10/15 years ago.

AR / 1994 — Left in 2009 aged 15 — Let go / made it elsewhere / was available at DU aged 20.

CW / 1996 — Left in 2016 aged 20 — Let go / squad politics in play? / patchy current form / still class.

KT / 1997 — Left in 2019 aged 22 — made it with us and has kept on going.

AH / 2022 — Left in 2118 aged 16 — Glee club issues? / tried to buy from Hertz 2021?

Mixed bag but all hugely talented.

  20. AR — let go @ 15 / midget physique — big is better vibe ruling youth football at the time.

Players develop at different rates. When Andy Robertson left, few supporters noticed any mistake. When he played at Queens Park and United, few Celtic supporters campaigned to buy him- so we, the amateurs were in the same boat as the scouts and coaches at Hull who did see something in him and he kicked on from there.

Hickey was, I heard, a different situation in that we wanted to keep him and then wanted to buy him back from Hearts but Hickey chose a softer team in which to break into the first team and then he chose the Italian money and now the EPL money. I like the lad as a midfielder with a lovely left foot slip pass but I have never seen him defend well- if I can commit heresy- a bit like playing Tommy Burns at Left Back.

We will make plenty more wrong judgements on players we keep and let go. There is an element of Art and Luck in amongst the science and stats on players. Calvin Miller and Islam Feruz looked world class for their age group at 15 and 16 but did not kick on when exposed to Big Boys football. Other players like Bernie Slaven and Jamie Vardy looked distinctly average at youth levels but were sought after in their early 20s.

We will not and cannot stop ever making mistakes.

  24. Brentford.

Much of the success enjoyed by Brentford has been down to their success in signing unknown players from French football .

Then selling them for huge profits ,E.G. Maupay.

    Then wisely reinvesting the profit.

One of the main scouts who discovered these players is a young man called Brendan McFarlane .

Brendan comes from East Wemyss in Fife .

He is a Celtic supporter ,and comes from a staunch Celtic supporting family.

He left Brentford a year or so ago .

He took up a senior scouting role with Toulouse FC .

His signings at Toulouse have just helped them get promoted to Ligue 1.

He is proving to be a very good judge of upcoming players ,who make the grade at EPL and Ligue one level.

He moved to France at a young age to scout the lower leagues.

Celtic could do worse than covet Brendan MacFarlane.

    P.S.

Brendan’s dad is a lurker and rare poster on here.

  26. The “big is better” issue really does not rule Youth football, certainly not at Celtic. Andy Robertson may have been told by someone that he was too wee but, it will have been a cover story to avoid crushing a young guy by telling him “The coaches don’t rate you”. I have watched too many youth teams at Celtic that were small, nippy and fast to believe this. It is only recently that Celtic have managed to find some big units for the defence but almost all our midfielders and forwards (apart from the one we stole from Scunthorpe) are small and nippy and in the Celtic tradition.

We can, obviously, do better, but we have some pretty decent coaches in the Youth set up and some pretty good players too. We just need a midway point between 5th tier Scottish football and SPFL level to help the best of them get a chance to develop before we cut the wrong ones loose.

  27. garygillespieshamstring on

I think you are right about his views of his prospects at Celtic Park having some influence.

As well as KT and Izzy, Celtic had Callum Waters, Aidan McIlduff and Calvin Miller all capable of playing left back or left mid. The first two mentioned were Scottish international players up to under 19/20 level, so it would have appeared to be stiff competition in front of him in the years he was in our youth system.
