Domination well into a second generation

It took 14 seasons for Celtic to win 11 titles in the 60s and 70s, 13 under Jock Stein and one under Billy McNeill. Although Celtic were utterly dominant through the early parts of that period, they never had a structural advantage, success came through having better management and players. That alignment of the stars was always going to end.

Rangers won 11 titles in 12 seasons, as David Murray could apparently do no wrong. To the untrained eye, they looked uncatchable. They had a stadium which was compliant with the new post-Taylor Report rules and a player squad that generated income. By contrast, Celtic had 40% less income, were seldom able to generate cash from player sales and needed to build a new stadium.

Had Murray more sense, Rangers would have dominated the 21st century, but he always wanted what he couldn’t have – Celtic’s European Cup triumph – and he drove the club into the dirt. To any Celtic fan who followed their team through the 1990s, having utter ownership of this century would seem ridiculous. We were a marginalised minority on our own streets, people stopped caring, the endless pain was too much.

Martin O’Neill came in 2000 and from that moment onwards, you fancied Celtic to win every tournament. Still, despite the success at home and in Europe, we lost millions each year Martin was in charge, locked in a game of chicken with Murray’s Rangers. Chairman Brian Quinn took the brave steps of calling time on the losses. He predicted that failure to live within our means would be calamitous, more so than merely losing the odd title. Across the city, Murray doubled down. Disguised renumeration was a strategy that initially brought success, then led to liquidation, and much hilarity.

As early as January 2005, seven years before Rangers went into administration, the signs were obvious, we would lose the odd title, but this would be our Generation of Domination (some of us bought the domain name back then to put down a marker). I don’t think we can be complacent, in fact, I can see a scenario when the good times stop, but it is more likely our dominant period will extend well into its second generation.

Appreciate these days. Appreciate what we do for Scottish football, giving an edge to the cup competitions they never had, and taking truly great champions to every corner of the country.

Congratulations to Ange, Callum and the rest of the players, heroes to a man. And to the board that put the strategy in place, the outstanding recruitment, commercial, medical and research teams – success has many fathers.

    What I find really strange about this incident is not that the referee, linesman and VAR missed it but the total lack of a claim from the Aberdeen player, really odd, is he being tapped up by Sevco to play for them next season and doesn’t want to create a scene, or am I too cynical?

    I’m not great at describing a race but in fitba’ terms we were 2-1 up with 10 minutes to go, then let in two late goals.

     

     

    I didn’t win any money, but left with the makings of big hangover.

    So as I pulled into the parking lot of the Publix supermarket in my neighborhood, to meet my16 yr old daughter, windows open inthe car, radio blaring stick yer coronation up yer arse, daughter crouching down between parked cars shouting “dad turn that down, you are embarassing me:))))))) I told her it was my right as a father and a happy Tim on this special day to act whatever way I want. How lucky are we to have a man in charge like Ange!!! He has changed the way we play and the attitude of our fans. I loved our teams under blessed Martin, and under Brendan Rogers, but there is just something about this group that I love. There are no superstars, the competition is fierce. Play average one week and there is someone there to take your place. I would love to watch the practices on a consistent basis because the level of intensity must be brilliant. I mentioned Callum McGregor a few months ago, and after watching him AFTER the game yesterday, the time he took and making sure the players enjoyed the adulation was a mark of a great leader. He looked into the fans, smiling away, acknowleding them, putting all the players front and center. he says all the right things in his interviews about our club. We will look backon him as one of our greats. he has taken his game over the last 5 or 6 years to a new level, and sustained that consistency always. If he was playing in the EPL, he would be getting snapped up by the biggest teams and starring in them. someone mentioned that he reminds them of Paul McStay. What a huge compliment and a worthy one at that.

    If, if Goldson was deemed to have fouled duk and a penalty given, would he have missed the next game (😊) because it wasn’t a genuine attempt to get the ball, would it then be a red card.

    We may not always agree with what Peter Lawell has done while in a position of authority at Celtic Park, e.g. how he has handled Res 12. I DO think, however, he has generally acted in what he perceives as in the best interests of Celtic and he always acts as Dermot Desmond demands

     

     

    *that pretty much answers the malcontents among our support, we have all had bosses, some we knew were complete j arthur rankers but in an effort to put food on the table, clothes on or weans backs and a roof over their heads we swallowed our pride and just got on with it.

    5 major honours, the total the original Rangers had before they went bust in 2012, although many of those honours in the last decade of their existence are highly disputed given barely anyone was properly registered.

    what marks kyogo out as one of our best in modern times is

     

     

    -it feels that he is out of the game for 95 % of the time but he scores and scores in big games.

     

     

    Didn’t click in the CL for him but I don’t criticise him for that as it was a big stretch for the entire team.
