Doncaster continues to hold line against Newco

136

The details of the SPFL’s agreement with league title sponsor cinch and Newco, which ends the legal dispute between league and club, have not been revealed, but what has been announced is not a good look for the governing body.

Newco, whose board is chaired by a car retailer, refused to display cinch branding, citing an existing deal with their chairman’s firm.  The new deal permits Newco to opt out of requirements to display cinch logos, which will remain in place for other clubs.

An SPFL statement confirmed Newco “are no longer required to participate by providing the sponsorship inventory that they have so far not provided, whilst, crucially, the overall income to Scottish football is expected to remain materially unchanged.”  Newco claimed the agreement is a “full vindication of our stance”.

It seems unlikely that other clubs would be required to display cinch inventory that Newco are excused from, without a corresponding reduction in payment to Newco.  Other clubs have vehicle sponsorships, including Celtic’s deal with Intelligent Car Leasing, without being permitted to drop the cinch logos.

SPFL chief exec, Neil Doncaster, may be the ultimate pragmatist, cutting a deal that costs no club other than Newco, but league rules and commercial deals should be sufficiently robust to prevent tawdry challenges like this.  Newco’s statement reiterated their desire to force Doncaster out of the league, citing their “wide-ranging concerns regarding the corporate governance of the SPFL.”  I suspect Doncaster retains sufficient backing from other clubs to continue to hold the line against Newco.

Couldn`t have put it better myself …..especially as ` contractual capacity ` would not have been expressed so succinctly by me :-)).

    Well done, that man.

Having read the article you linked, your comment was absolutely correct. For conformation of that we need look no further back than last season when a shocking advantage to Sevco was built in to the layout of the first two rounds of matches. That Ange overcame that blatant series of advantages to Sevco, finishing the second round of matches just six points off the pace, was quite remarkable (or should I say even more remarkable!).

I would absolutely love to see the faces of the administrators IF Sevco fall at the first Euro hurdle, drop in to the Europa Cup and end up playing Sundays after each Euro game as a result, while we play Saturdays.

Good afternoon all from Ruglen. Has the smoke cleared from the Garngad yet? FSTB, your neighbour is a walking disaster area. 😂

  4. On the cinch deal and yesterday’s (non-)announcement of the future distribution of cinch payments, I still think that the surprise announcement last autumn that the Womens’ PL had gained a new sponsor in Parks of Hamilton is not unconnected with the cinch ‘compromise’. Both sides save face and, perhaps, the huns share of the cinch money pays for the WPL sponsorship?

    Just a thought…

  5. Sorry, not having any of this.If this was the CL,and any club came out and said they were not promoting Gazprom,or whoever is doing it now, their arses would hit the pavement without any legal nonsense.Every team knows the rules. If you want to take part in any competition, run by any governing body, you abide by their rules,or get out.A load of waffle.

We are still in the dark about the outcome. How much were they paid ?Should be the question getting asked.

As I said yesterday,if they can ignore Cinch, for their home games, can they use another sponsor on the Boards,if they are losing ANY money.Would not be surprised if this caused more legal problems,it’s all in the detail, which we are ignorant of.Still too much left unexplained by the mealy mouthed response from Doncaster.

  6. I’m surprised that Liverpool hasn’t boycotted the Barclays signage as they are sponsored by standard chartered

Administrators don’t feel the need to put everything in the public domain, nor should they. Especially when it would trigger the sort of confrontation they’re trying to avoid”

    ————————————————

I don’t ask that they put everything into the public domain but……………….

If administrators are allowed to administrate in secret, you are allowing more than a nod or wink towards corruption.

Administration needs to be fair. It cannot be guaranteed to be fair unless it is open and perused and scrutinised. Rangers/Sevco are not presenting this outcome in secrecy; they are proclaiming it to their klanbase as a total victory for them and and abject defeat and humiliation for Doncaster and the league. the league are sucking up this attack and saying nothing.

When Sevco tried this on with HMRCin 2019 and promoted the narrative of punitive sanctions, over-estimated debt levels, and partisan prosecution, they issued a late night tweet stating:-

“As widely reported today and to clarify: HMRC won against Rangers’ tax avoidance in the Supreme Court, and did not miscalculate anything”

There was no pig wrestling. No prolonged debate. Just a simple tweet left hanging there as a statement for the historical record.

I can understand the desire not to prolong a needless argument. I cannot understand the cowardice involved in negotiations an agreement that allows the injuring party to proclaim victory, whilst you commit the injure party and yourself as adjudicators to a vow of silence and leaves the paying public in the dark.

When dealing with the perennially belligerent, you need to stand your ground at least once.

All six pre-season games live on Celtic TV

Just weeks after clinching the league title in his first season as manager, Ange Postecoglou is already planning for the season ahead with SIX pre-season games, and the ONLY place to see ALL SIX games is Celtic TV.

Celtic TV will broadcast live from Austria as the Bhoys get their season underway with two matches on July 6 and 9. They then move to the Czech Republic on July 13 as first division side Banik Ostrava celebrate their centenary.

We then return to Celtic Park for a match on July 16 against former English Premier League Champions, Blackburn Rovers before heading to Poland on July 20 to take on Legia Warsaw in a tribute match for former Celtic goalkeeper and Legia legend, Artur Boruc.

Finally, before the league season gets underway we welcome Norwich City to Paradise on July 23.

  18. I see the Las Vegas Convention is now being described as an Scottish Nationalist and Irish Republican event by the daily mail.

I was talking more about the need for public backing. In this case I don’t think there is one, otherwise we’re getting into hauners territory – anyone backing him would be seen as taking sides which really helps no one in the long run. If the administrators aren’t seen as being completely free of it then were all in trouble.

Doncaster success or failure relies on the support of the club bosses, I’m afraid what we think comes a long way down the list

“When dealing with the perennially belligerent, you need to stand your ground at least once.”

I think you’re being a bit harsh there. I think he has stood up to them before, I think on this case he’s picking his battles abd trying to move the game foreword, move it on from where the Huns want it to be

  20. I’m with Doncaster, if that is his motive. Im sick of the game being dragged down by them. I don’t enjoy the conflict, I don’t think constantly having to deal with aggressive attention seeking Huns who use argument and conflict as a business tool is good for the gane or for Celtic.
