Doncaster continues to hold line against Newco

136

The details of the SPFL’s agreement with league title sponsor cinch and Newco, which ends the legal dispute between league and club, have not been revealed, but what has been announced is not a good look for the governing body.

Newco, whose board is chaired by a car retailer, refused to display cinch branding, citing an existing deal with their chairman’s firm.  The new deal permits Newco to opt out of requirements to display cinch logos, which will remain in place for other clubs.

An SPFL statement confirmed Newco “are no longer required to participate by providing the sponsorship inventory that they have so far not provided, whilst, crucially, the overall income to Scottish football is expected to remain materially unchanged.”  Newco claimed the agreement is a “full vindication of our stance”.

It seems unlikely that other clubs would be required to display cinch inventory that Newco are excused from, without a corresponding reduction in payment to Newco.  Other clubs have vehicle sponsorships, including Celtic’s deal with Intelligent Car Leasing, without being permitted to drop the cinch logos.

SPFL chief exec, Neil Doncaster, may be the ultimate pragmatist, cutting a deal that costs no club other than Newco, but league rules and commercial deals should be sufficiently robust to prevent tawdry challenges like this.  Newco’s statement reiterated their desire to force Doncaster out of the league, citing their “wide-ranging concerns regarding the corporate governance of the SPFL.”  I suspect Doncaster retains sufficient backing from other clubs to continue to hold the line against Newco.

That was a fine article by young Reo Hatate. I don`t think I remember , (actually, I KNOW I don`t remember!) such a detailed article by a current footballer. If this is widely read just before the season, I predict a rapturous welcome for Reo. I would also predict a fine season for Hatate-San (?).

I think your reading may be a bit off.

Both Douglas Park and His firm have issued statements seeking an apology on the back of their “victory” and the SPFL’s U-turn.:-

The firm owned by Rangers chairman Douglas Park have blasted the SPFL over their U-turn in the cinch sponsorship run, and demanded an apology.

League chiefs yesterday announced they had negotiated a new deal which excluded the Light Blues from having to take part in promoting cinch.

It came after a row erupted after the Ibrox club claimed the deal created a conflict of interest due to their own agreement with Parks of Hamilton.

Gers chiefs released a statement last night claiming the latest twist vindicates them and proves questions must be asked of those running the Scottish game.

Park’s company have taken a similar view.

A spokesperson for Park’s of Hamilton Ltd said: “We were not surprised to learn from the media announcement last night that the SPFL have finally acknowledged Rangers legitimately engaged rule i7 in June of last year and thus, vindicated the stance held by the club for over a year.

“It is not for us to speculate as to why the SPFL leadership sought to ignore their own rules for so long.

“The fact that the SPFL prevaricated and continued to stall an arbitration process they themselves initiated in August last year, and which was ruled upon by the court of appeal in October, underlined the weakness of the case they truly had. Were it not for our interim interdict, it is clear their strategy was to try to bully one of their members and shareholders; a strategy which they have employed on numerous occasions.

“Throughout the last year, Park’s have kept their counsel as the SPFL leadership insulted us and misled the SFA, their member clubs, their title sponsor, and various other stakeholders in Scottish football.

“We have a long standing and proud association with Scottish football, and it was entirely wrong that we were compelled to take the SFA to court because the SPFL decided to abuse the SFA’s arbitration process.

“We believe that the SPFL and members of its leadership have brought the game into disrepute and have failed, as have the SPFL as an organisation, to act with the utmost good faith towards their members.

“The SFA must carry out an independent investigation into this issue which has cost all parties involved hundreds of thousands of pounds. Despite being awarded expenses in court, Park’s will not recover all their legal fees nor be compensated for the reputational damage caused by the SPFL.

“Finally, the glaring omission from the SPFL’s statement was an apology. The SPFL leadership owe their members an apology, they owe Park’s an apology, they owe the SFA an apology and they also owe an apology to Rangers.

“Unfortunately, they seem to lack any accountability and would rather spend their members money than admit their failures.”

    ——————————————-

and while the SPFL have not yet joined the wrestle, they are announcing the bout, donning their leotard and wellies, and getting ready to rumble:-

The SPFL have hit back at Rangers and Parks of Hamilton and say they will issue a full version of events as soon as they are given the go ahead.

The governing body say they aren’t willing to break any confidentiality clauses in the legal process but have written to Rangers and Parks of Hamilton to confirm whether that no longer applies.

And they say they will give a ‘full and frank narrative’ to their member clubs as the row over cinch’s sponsorship of the SPFL continues despite the new deal.

The SPFL announced on Wednesday they had agreed new sponsorship with cinch and Neil Doncaster hailed the deal as a good one while Rangers claimed they had been vindicated.

Parks of Hamilton released a similar statement insisting the Ibrox side had been proven right but the SPFL have now hit back again.

A spokesperson for the SPFL said: “We note with interest Park’s version of events.

“We are currently bound by the confidentiality of the legal process. Frustratingly, we have had to keep our counsel throughout. However, we have written to Rangers and Park’s seeking confirmation that this confidentiality no longer applies, following yesterday’s announcement of our revised title sponsorship agreement with cinch.

“If they agree to our proposal we will be able to provide a full and frank narrative to our member clubs. We very much look forward to the opportunity to set the record straight.”

  5. Evening all.

Not long in from a wee jaunt about Hamilton town centre, love visiting the place, sadly however it seems to be suffering like a lot of our towns, shops and businesses closed, much like my home town, Coatbridge, such a shame.

The reason for visiting Hamilton today was to take the (current) Mrs BB, MAGUA, don’t you tell her I said that 🙂

for a meal to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary. She is a brilliant, beautiful (I am seriously punching above my weight) and she makes me roar with laughter. If there is a luckier mhan that walks this Earth I’d love to meet him.

She doesn’t read the blog, however I am more than happy to announce, ‘Jane, I love you dearly’
