Doncaster continues to hold line against Newco

136

The details of the SPFL’s agreement with league title sponsor cinch and Newco, which ends the legal dispute between league and club, have not been revealed, but what has been announced is not a good look for the governing body.

Newco, whose board is chaired by a car retailer, refused to display cinch branding, citing an existing deal with their chairman’s firm.  The new deal permits Newco to opt out of requirements to display cinch logos, which will remain in place for other clubs.

An SPFL statement confirmed Newco “are no longer required to participate by providing the sponsorship inventory that they have so far not provided, whilst, crucially, the overall income to Scottish football is expected to remain materially unchanged.”  Newco claimed the agreement is a “full vindication of our stance”.

It seems unlikely that other clubs would be required to display cinch inventory that Newco are excused from, without a corresponding reduction in payment to Newco.  Other clubs have vehicle sponsorships, including Celtic’s deal with Intelligent Car Leasing, without being permitted to drop the cinch logos.

SPFL chief exec, Neil Doncaster, may be the ultimate pragmatist, cutting a deal that costs no club other than Newco, but league rules and commercial deals should be sufficiently robust to prevent tawdry challenges like this.  Newco’s statement reiterated their desire to force Doncaster out of the league, citing their “wide-ranging concerns regarding the corporate governance of the SPFL.”  I suspect Doncaster retains sufficient backing from other clubs to continue to hold the line against Newco.

    In the first set of 2022/23 fixtures we have Aberdeen, Hearts, Rangers and Hibs at home.

    Must be a conspiracy to help Celtic win the league.

    Disgraceful,gutless,naive,some of the words that would go towards the SPFLs response to the Hun tonight.

    They will ask their permission to break their agreement to silence !!!!!!!.Dear God,what a spineless outfit.

    Its beyond belief.

    I might have known Doncaster’s comment would go right over your head.

    He was clearly being sarcastic and ironic when he responded to the Rangers public statement with – Oh does that mean the confidentiality clause you insisted on no longer applies?

    Take your time.

    I didn`t know the fixtures had been announced and was going to suggest the following as a preference:

    Us:

    Ross County ( H);

    Hibs ( A);

    Huns ( H):

    Dundee Utd ( A).

    Them:

    Livi ( A);

    Hearts (H);

    Celtic ( A);

    Aberdeen (H).

  5. One game at Home at the end of July then three out of four Away in August whilst der Hun have three at Home? Hmmm…

  6. Before the split we will play sevco, Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs and Livingston twice at home. The opposite of last season. This should give us the advantage.

    If we have to travel, August is better than during the CL season September to November. Another conspiracy to favour Celtic!

  9. A cursory glance at the fixtures (aside from a honky Sunday to open the season) makes decent reading. First game versus them is at home before the champions league fixtures kick in, the games around the champions league fixtures are kind and there’s no major travel around Christmas and New Year.

    Good point but stop trying to ruin my conspiracy theories !

    Overall, the fixtures are what they are and we should deal with them accordingly. I do , though, agree with those bemoaning the 4:30 pm Sunday KO.

    Did the Huns have that last year?

  11. Just found them:

    cinch Premiership – Saturday July 31

    Dundee v St Mirren

    Heart of Midlothian v Celtic (Sky Sports, 8.00pm)

    Rangers v Livingston (Sky Sports, 1.30pm)

    Ross County v St Johnstone

    cinch Premiership – Sunday August 1

    Aberdeen v Dundee United

    Motherwell v Hibernian (Sky Sports 4.30pm)

  12. I suppose a 4:40pm Sunday Home KO is better thaqnan 8:oo PM Saturday Away one :-)))

    Aren`t we the lucky ones !

  13. Opening day fixture … Sky pay the cash so they decide, no epl fixtures till following week so late Sunday afternoon is always their main game

    Surely the club can’t start complaining about the contracts they sign up too :-)

  14. Tom McLaughlin on

    Celtic have a CL game on Tuesday 6th or Wednesday 7th September.

    The draw for the CL group stages is on Thursday 25th August, only 9 days before Celtic v Rangers. They can’t change it at such short notice, so Saturday 3rd it is then.

    I have my son’s wedding that day. Damn.

  15. Haven’t checked but pretty sure we have CL game(s) in September and that there are also International matches, eg Scotland – Ireland, Ukraine too I think, so big demands on our players right from early in the season. Got a few friendlies to play long before that and maybe a few players in too. A dominant good in the air centre back would not not go amiss. A real opportunity to prepare well for the season ahead.
